DigitalLife Dead This Year

DigitalLife is a trade show that is put on by Ziff Davis Media at the New York Jacob Javitz Center, which typically included technology and video games, but seems to be cancelled for this year because of a bad economy. Vice President Paul O’Reilly said the following during an interview:

The poor economic conditions have created a very different and difficult dynamic for us this year, and we weren’t confident that we could present a show experience that was consistent with the successes of prior years.

I can say that as a previous attendee last year this show was dying, he goes on to say:

Hopefully, a bigger and stronger DigitalLife will return in 2009. We will make additional announcements about the future of the show when details are available.

I would love for his last statement to be true since this show is very accessible to everyone on the East coast and it would be great to have something that could rival E3 or CES on the East coast as well, but it seems like a big stretch especially after the news of this years cancellation.

Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts Overhyped

We have all heard about Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts a lot since E3 this year and everyone made a very big deal about it, but after watching this clip I have to say that I am unimpressed. The level design looks like it was made by a three year old and the graphics look horrific both in the levels and the HUD. This does not look like a platform style game at all and instead looks like a first generation racing game. It also does not help that whoever is giving the demo really sucks at the game as well, the game just did not look fun form what they showed off.

People are taking issue with my opinion on this and i am unsure why, watch the video it is clear. Ok I have not gotten hands on with the game yet but do you really need to? If you drive a piece of shiet that handles well does that make it less of a piece of shiet? This game looks terrible and yes BK is overhyped because since E3 it has been touted everywhere and after seeing it more in depth I give it a resounding meh.

Xbox Developer in Murder-Suicide

From Redmond, Washington a software development engineer in Microsoft’s Xbox division was murdered by her estranged husband who then committed suicide. Melissa Batten, 36, was shot to death by her husband Joseph Batten, also 36. Unfortunately Melissa had already gotten an order of protection against him, but things escalated past that.

In her request for a protection order, Melissa Batten described how her husband had called her more than 30 times on July 19 and 20 and warned her never to hang up on him. She also described a chain of circumstances that led to the phone calls, including how her husband broke into her workplace at Microsoft on July 16 and was caught by security guards.

Joseph Batten confronted her in a parking lot, shot her several times with a 9-mm handgun and then shot himself in the head, police reported.

Our thoughts and prayers here at Loot Ninja go out to Melissa’s friends and family.

Here is a video of Melissa at E3 giving an overview of Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts:

Fat Princess on Fox News

Fat Princess is a game that has been in the crosshairs of every feminist group on the planet after debuting at E3, because it portrays a morbidly obese princess. Apparently this has angered many feminists so Fox news decided to take a crack at it as well. I like how the only female correspondent flips things on them by saying she loves the game and has no problem with it. The other reporter tries to claim that video games have run out of themes so they have to use a fat princess, lame discussion if you ask me and a topic that is being blown out of proportion.

Nintendo Conference in a 2 Minute Clip

First we had brought you the Sony E3 press conference summation and now here is the Nintendo one. I have to say that I laughed pretty hard at this one because it was pretty spot on, but the last 20 seconds had me rolling. Enjoy.

Bungie President Did Not Agree with Postponement

Bungie

Bungie president Harold Ryan has come out during an interview with Eurogamer and said that when Xbox boss Don Mattrick told him that his studio’s latest Halo product would not be shown at E3, he was not amused or “laughing”.

Harold Ryan said quote:

I certainly didn’t agree with the decision to delay our news until sometime after E3.

Bungie is always concerned first and foremost with our fans. Whenever we are prevented from exceeding their positive expectations it is not a laughing matter.

This is in response to Don Mattrick telling Eurogamer that Harold “laughed” when he was told his company would not present at the conference.

Seems like no love loss between these two right now, but Harold did say that the Halo product would be announced “another time of the year” that would “create an opportunity where people can interact with it.”

The last quote I think is a stab at E3 itself. Bungie knows that the average gamer is not present at E3 and looks to be setting its eye on another conference. My best guess would be Leipzig, what do you think?

I think the omission of Bungie at the E3 conference was a bit of a shock and a bad move from Don Mattrick.

Resistance: Retribution Debut Trailer

You can pretty much say that Resistance is one of the flagship titles for the Sony brand right now. With the success of the original PS3 launch title and the much hyped sequel coming this fall, Sony decided it would be fitting to bring the series to the PSP with Resistance: Retribution.

Here’s the first trailer from the game, which looks stunning on the PSP. It’s a third person shooter and you aren’t Nathan Hale. Get ready for some Chimera killing action in Spring 2009.

Sony E3 2008 Press Conference Wrap Up

PS3

Sony went last with their press conference at E3. I’m just going to put it out there… they crapped the bed. There was not much announced we didn’t know about and everything we saw was fairly boring. Hardly any applause in the theater could be heard. We got a teaser for God of War 3, saw info on the upcoming MAG online shooter, and a few others. Overall, it wasn’t very good.

Instead of bringing you our normal wrap-up, myself and Al chatted the press conference and here’s the entire log for your viewing pleasure:

Al
And so it begins, Sony is close to taking the stage and starting their conference
hope this turns out better than the Nintendo conference

Matt
We’re hoping for some big game announcements, hopefully God of War 3.
Microsoft had some strong announcement, but went very casual. Will Sony stay hardcore or will they go the Nintendo route?

Nintendo confirms WiiSpeak

Nintendo
Nintendo has confirmed live voice chat during their presentation of Animal Crossing: City Folk at the E3 press conference, WiiSpeak is the new coined name for it. It will not be a headset but more of a speaker device that will sit on top of the sensor bar. The speaker will pick up a lot of sound in the area since it is not a microphone by your mouth, so I can see this becoming a bit annoying with listening to other gamer’s background noise while you play.

You can now chat with friends across the world and build further gaming relationships says Nintendo. Nothing new if you have been playing on other consoles.

I am curious how Nintendo will protect it’s younger gamers against profanity and exposure to the wrong elements by introducing voice chat? WiiSPeak seems interesting, but it is a needed option for the Wii if they want to be taken seriously against MS and Sony online.
