I know that HD DVD is dead in the water now and the HD DVD players and movies are no longer being supported, but what I am talking about are the physical discs themselves? For about a few weeks after the announcement that BluRay was taking over as the predominant medium for Hi Def movies, we saw the prices on HD DVD fall and go on sale and then boom, they disappeared. Where the hell did they go? Did Best Buy and all the retailers burn them out of spite? You can’t find a physical HD DVD anymore, I wouldn’t mind picking up a few for cheap in a store.
Do you have an old NES console lying around in your closet? Do you need an extra DVD player in your house? Well then chekc out what this guy did, he actually modded his classic NES and made it into a DVD player. Pretty sweet, would have been even better if he crammed an Xbox in there. This is the only Nintendo system to ever be able to play DVD’s, well done!
Did you get your Metal Gear Solid 4 pre-order in yet? We did. If you drop some cash on the game now, you get a pretty cool Metal Gear Solid Vol. 2 DVD to get you up to speed on the storyline. Oh yeah, you get a Beta code for Metal Gear Online… if you care about that sort of thing.
First, the bad news. This DVD is a letterboxed 4:3 type of shenanigans. It’s sort of understandable, since the earlier games didn’t support 16:9 resolutions. But MGS2 and MGS3 supported widescreen on the PS2, so I’m not sure why they didn’t go with widescreen versions of those videos. Even the MGS4 videos are letterboxed. Boo on that.
One of our readers came across this article that focused on the current state of gaming on how downloading video games may become the wave of the future? Will CD’s and DVD’s give way to just pure downloadable content? It could be quite possible with the widespread acceptance of Broadband and High Speed Internet services, in a not so distant past cartridges were the only gaming format available and those have gone the way of the dinosaur now.
According to the NPD Group, a consulting firm that collects sales data on consumer purchases like games, over the past three months about 86 percent of video games were bought on discs, with the remaining 14 percent making it to computers or game consoles as downloads.
14% is pretty impressive if you ask me for purchases. Read More »
The poor corpse of HD DVD isn’t even cold yet and we are already seeing price drops on hardware and now the movies. Looks like Amazon is having a half off sale on a good amount of their HD DVD selections. Not a bad time to pick up that copy of Transformers and a few others, unfortunately I didn’t see Heroes on sale. Be sure that even more of these types of sales will be springing up shortly so if you miss this one don’t sweat it.
I need to ask you something. How good are you at videogames? Obviously you enjoy them or you wouldn’t even be on this site to begin with. But how good are you? Nowadays you got gamerscores. And, as my fellow editors can attest to, they are some of the more important things in gaming. How else can you compare yourself to your peers?
But for those of us old enough to remember, that answer is easy as pie: Scores.
Now I’m sure that some of our younger friends are making a rather confused face. “Scores? We have those. They’re nothing new. You get a high score-thats the goal.” And anyone asking themselves what the hell I’m talking about probably didn’t live in the 70’s of 80’s that long. Which is both a good thing and a bad thing-especially if you remember the fashion. Christ.
Ok with Thanksgiving being tomorrow this marks one of the worst shoppings days ever, Black Friday! For those of you that may not know about this god forsaken day, it is when the women folk convince the men that they need to get up at the crack of dawn to go shopping in order to exploit doorbuster sales! Sometimes these sales are good, but you have to stand in line outside of a store at 4am just to get a shot at any of the things on sale, typically the good stuff is limited to a few per store and it becomes a huge headache!
Best Buy is no different and they have given us a preview of what to expect during the crack of dawn sale:
* FREE GHII with Xbox 360 (minimum 15 per store, limit 1 per customer)
* Stuntman Ignition, COD3:Gold Edition, SpiderMan 3 and GRAW2 for $19.99 on the Xbox 360 (minimum 20 per tore, 1 per customer)
* On the movie side of things you can get a DVD copy of Knocked Up or 300 for $6.99
All and all not anything that screams to me that I need to get up before the sun comes out, but we will see.
I know what you were thinking? What do I buy my father for Christmas. The Complete Third Season of Martin is now available. You’re very welcome.
