PSP Plus Gives DualShock 3 Support to Resitance: Retribution

This one isn’t a total surprise, but Sony has officially announced PSP Plus, a software package built into Resistance: Retribution that will allow you to use your DualShock 3 controller (that means dual analog sticks and rumble) with the upcoming PSP shooter.

There is a catch, people. There’s always a catch. To enable this feature, you have to connect your PSP to your PS3 while running Resistance 2 to enable the feature. From R2, there’s a menu option to enable PSP Plus! for your handheld version. If you’re a Resistance fan, I’d imagine you’re picking up both anyway. You’ll also be able to use the video out features of the PSP Slim or PSP Bright to watch on your big screen.

The PSP Plus! mode turns off aim assist, adds vibrate, gives you dual analog controls, and increases the challenge level of the game. You know, make it harder since you have real controls.

I’m personally very much looking forward to this. Not sure how happy I’ll be going from home to mobile gaming switching between the PSP controls and the DS3, but we’ll see how it plays out. Hopefully more games start to incorporate this functionality.

DualShock 3 Review

DualShock 3

I’ve had a lot of time to spend with my DualShock 3 controllers. I imported one from Japan a little while back and then picked up a US copy this past weekend. I have to say, it’s well worth the purchase.

The DS3 is much sturdier controller than the SIXAXIS. It has both the motion controls from the original controller plus rumble, so you get the best of both worlds. The new DualShock is heavier, which is definitely needed. One of the biggest complaints about the SIXAXIS was that it’s too light, and I agree. The DualShock 3 resolves this with the weights needed to make the controller rumble.

The battery life is not affected by the added vibration, which is a huge plus. I’m not sure if Sony put a bigger battery in there or what, but I’ve found similar battery life between using my DualShock 3 and my SIXAXIS controllers.

If you own a PS3, I would definitely recommend picking one of these up. It’s always good to have another controller around. Now I just need to find something to do with my old SIXAXIS controllers…

SIXAXIS Getting Discontinued

That’s right folks, it’s sayonara time for the SIXAXIS. The much belittled launch controller of the PS3 is no more. With the DualShock 3 being released next week in North America, Sony has confirmed they will no longer be producing the SIXAXIS. In a statement to Multiplayer, a representative of Sony had this to say:

Sixaxis will no longer be offered after it’s completely sold through at retail (likely by the summer timeframe).

Look for some fire sales this summer as retailers try to liquidate stock. If rumble isn’t your thing, you might be able to pick up a couple cheap controllers.

DualShock 3 Dated for US

SIXAXIS Image

Do you crave rumble for your PS3, but don’t want to import a controller from Japan? Sony feels your pain, and has officially announced that the DualShock 3 is coming to the US in April. While they just mention the month, word out of Destination PlayStation, a retailers event in Arizona, puts an exact date of April 15th on the new controller.

The retail price will be $54.99, a mere $5 more than the standard SIXAXIS. Personally, I don’t think they should be charging anymore money. $50 is already a lot for an controller.

Either way, the new rumble-enabled joysticks will be available before the April 17th release of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.

Rumor Mill: 120GB-160GB PS3 with DualShock 3 Coming Soon

PS3 Horizontal

The intarnets have been ablaze recently with rumors of the 80GB PS3 being discontinued. Sony hasn’t made any official announcements yet, but a trips to a few local shops seem to corroborate the story.

Ars Technica’s rumor mole has come out and said that Sony will be sticking with a 2 SKU system for the PS3, and a 120GB or even a 160GB SKU will replace the now defunct 80GB console. The kicker? The new system will be bundled with the DualShock 3 controller for rumble out of the box. Could the new SKU possibly be white, since that version recently hit the FCC?

Sounds plausible, but only time will tell. We’ll keep you posted as we hear more from Sony.

TGS07: DualShock 3 Officially Confirmed

Kaz Hirai, master of the PlayStation World, let the cat out of the bag (finally). The rumble-enabled version of the SIXAXIS, now called the DualShock 3, will be making it’s way to a PS3 near you.

No pricing has been set as of yet, but expect the new controller to drop in Japan in November and hit the US and Europe in Spring 2008. Why the huge delay? Anyway, the controller is said to be slightly heavier, with no outward appearance changes other than the addition of the DualShock 3 logo on the controller.

I’m quite excited about this one. Going to have to replace my current SIXAXIS with a DualShock 3 to get my rumble back for PS3 games.
