Review: Big Bang Mini

Big Bang Mini Screen 1

If you’re looking for a fun 2D shooter on the Nintendo DS, Big Bang Mini from SouthPeak Games is your answer. For a cool $20, you’re getting a good deal of quick pick up and play content. Easy to pick up and hard to put down, I had a blast with Big Bang Mini (pun intended).

There is a very fun feel to the game with its graphical style. Each of the game’s nine stages is based in a real location, such as New York City, Rio de Janeiro and Paris. The stylized backgrounds and great music give each stage a very upbeat feeling and you’ll enjoy watching what’s going on in the background as much as listening to the tunes.

Caveat Emptor: Buying Video Games From China on eBay

This is an original feature to Loot Ninja.  Caveat Emptor is a legal term for “Buyer Beware”.  We give you the heads up on mistakes we have made buying things.

This week: Buying Video Games From China on eBay.

Mistake: Believing that you can buy a copy of Tetris for the DS from China for your wife so she can get in to gaming and you will actually receive a copy of Tetris for the DS.

Reality: The doorbell rings and you package from the Far East is waiting for you. The second you open it, you realize that there is trouble afoot. This is not the game you ordered. This is not even a legit game at all.

Outcome: The fuckstick who swindled you in China has not only sent you Tetris for the DS, he has not sent you a licensed DS game. Breaking the honor code of eBay, he has sent you your very own bootleg copy of Super Mario Bros DS. The game is in Mandarin Chinese, which you don’t speak. The game does not work, in which you are not surprised. He could have sent you 3 boxes of butt plugs which you or your wife could have at least gotten some use out of.

Final price: Your wife thinks you are a jackass because you can’t even buy a game right. Your 20 bucks is in the hand of some scumbag. You are left with the video game equivalent of frozen duck shit. Your trust in mankind is fading and that charity you sometimes give to can go fuck themselves.

Caveat Emptor: Matt Banks who bought Tetris DS for his wife so she could get into gaming and allowing her to get dick slapped from 9000 miles away.

Christmas Vacation Travel – What Games to Bring?

I’m leaving it all up to you, loyal Loot Ninja readers! I’m going to be doing a lot of traveling between Christmas and New Years, so gaming on my consoles and PC just isn’t going to happen. It’ll be all about the DS and PSP. I don’t have an iPhone anymore since I switched to back to BlackBerry.

What games should I bring with me? Bear in mind, I won’t have long gaming sessions, so something that’s pick up and go is a must, or at least something that can be instantly saved if I only have a few minutes.

Let me know in the comments what games I should be playing on my handhelds over Christmas break.

GTA: Chinatown Wars Jacks Your DS in March

GTA

More GTA than you can shake a stick at will be hitting various platforms in early 2009. The Lost and Damned is coming to the Xbox 360 in February and Chinatown Wars is hitting the DS in March, specifically the 17th in the US and the 20th in Europe. Rockstar dropped the news in a press release today.

“Rockstar Leeds have once again created a game that far exceeds our standard for deep and innovative entertainment,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “We are incredibly excited to share this enormous and uncompromising Grand Theft Auto experience with DS fans.”

I know I’m extremely excited about this title. I think the GTA series could work very well on the DS with its unique control scheme. It’s going to be a busy couple months in early 2009.

Nintendo Makes with the Racism

Ruh Roh. Someone’s getting their ass handed to them. Nintendo sent a few journalists (not us… why not, Nintendo?) DS carts of Animal Crossing: Wild World. The game came out in 2005, but the news here is that you can import your character and spoils into the recently released Animal Crossing: City Folk on the Wii.

To streamline the process, Nintendo went about unlocking all kinds of stuff and putting that save file into the DS cart before sending it out. How thoughtful. The problem arises with a phrase someone taught a sheep in the game. See, in Animal Crossing, you can teach creatures phrases to greet you with. Someone at Nintendo decided it would be a good idea to teach the sheep Baabara to call you the N word. Yikes.

Luckily, this didn’t go out to many people and definitely not the public. But still, it’s a PR nightmare for Nintendo. While we and many others have asked Nintendo for comment, they’re keeping pretty tight lipped about the situation. Really don’t know what to say here. They screwed up big. I have a feeling they aren’t going to acknowledge anything and just wait for it to cool down and people forget.

Review: MySIMS Kingdom (DS)

MySIMS! NOW WITH KINGDOMS!! DA DA DAAAAAAA!!!! {SILENCE}

Developer: Electronic Arts Publisher: Nintendo Release Date: October 28th, 2008

Now, I know what you’re thinking (or should be thinking for the purpose of this opening) ‘this game came out in October, what’s the deal?’ Well, honestly I haven’t played a SIMS game since ‘The Sims‘ on my PC when I lived with my ex girlfriend (you know who you are). So I played a while and got ready to write this up. Then I’m at my buddy’s house and his kid has a copy of the first MySims. So I thought I’d try it out.

I’ll tell you right now, they’re almost the exact same game. But I’ll do this review as a standalone just to be fair. Cool?

Alright, here we go.

WarioWare Titles Galore

Nintendo’s president had all sorts of good financial news to speak about this week and now we have new software title news for the DS and DSi.  What more could a guy ask for?  The two brand spanking new WarioWare titles are WarioWare: Photograph for the DSi and your soon to be ancient DS will get WarioWare Myself.  In addition to these new titles, a variety of WarioWare minigames from Game Boy Advance and older DS installments will be available for download as DSiWare titles.

WarioWare: Photograph will utilize the built in camera in the DSi where it will use your motions to complete the minigames.  WarioWare Myself will allow players to create their own minigames and share them with others.  As for the release dates, you will just have to wait as the DSi itself doesn’t even have an official release date yet in the U.S.

Skate It Dated Nov. 19th

Publisher EA has announced that Skate It, for the Wii and DS will be released on November 19th, the same day as Microsoft’s NXE Update.  This entire year has been fairly void of skating titles for any console so it is somewhat of a relief that we get at least something from this extreme sports category.

Skate It will give gamers the option of control through either the Wii Remote and Nunchuk or Nintendo’s own Wii Balance Board.  The DS version will of course, use the stylus.  The game looks decent, plus it gives owners of the Wii Balance Board the chance to finally blow the dust off and give it another try.  EA did a fine job with Skate so this is at least worth a second look, especially for third party starved Wii owners.

Preview: SimAnimals (Wii & DS)

While playing around with all kinds of new things at EA last Friday, I was greatly impressed with MySims Kingdom. The same cannot be said for SimAnimals, a new exploration for the Sims team. You assume a god-like role and control a small parcel of land with the goal of having various animals move in and call your local home. If it sounds boring, you’re mostly right.

Unfortunately, SimAnimals did not sit with me the same way any Sims title has previously. Making animals and plants happy isn’t my idea of a good time, and the demo seen at EA confirmed my initial thoughts. Even though the game has a good deal of variety with the various animals and topographies, very little excitement is to be had other than seeing squirrels get eaten by bears and wolves.
