You remember that gem of a song from Guitar Hero 3? Through the Fire and Flames put blisters on many a gamer’s hand on Medium, let alone Expert. With the release of Guitar Hero Smash Hits, the full band can dare and try what could be the hardest rhythm game song ever. I can normally play Hard and Expert drums in Rock Band and Guitar Hero World Tour, but I have to crank it down to Medium for this one. Watching this on Expert+ (which is made for dual pedals) with only one foot pedal almost brings a tear to my eye. Unless I somehow sell my soul for a forbidden donut, there’s no prayer of me doing this.
What do you get when you mix Through the Fire and Flames on Expert and a dude with entirely too much time on his hands? Of course, the answer is a MIDI drum mod that works with Guitar Hero so you can play the hardest song ever without an actual guitar. Did you think of something else? Watch this guy bang it out and thank the gaming gods that you don’t have this much free time. Seriously.
If you’re serious about getting better on drums for Rock Band, there’s some modding that needs to occur with your kit. First and foremost, you need to replace that flimsy pedal that ships with the system. It just doesn’t give you the feel and performance you need for the hard and expert levels. The best way to instantly improve your drum play is to pick up The Destroyer Pedal. This thing is utterly amazing. It’s a real drum pedal modded to work with Rock Band.
The pedal has a magnet on the side with a sensor mounted to the arm of the pedal. As soon as the magnet passes the sensor, the game recognizes your drum hit. You can customize the height of the magnet on the pedal by loosening the screws and moving it slightly. So if you want it to become more sensitive, move the magnet a bit and you won’t have to move your foot as far. The way it comes setup is perfect for me.
I’ve been stuck on a lot of songs on hard. I just couldn’t get the bass notes because the stock pedal was too flimsy and just doesn’t feel like a pedal should. I was never able to get quick double hits. The first song I played once the pedal came was Enter Sandman on Hard, followed by Tom Sawyer on Hard. Mind you, I’ve pretty much failed these songs most times I played. On both, I got over 95% the first time through. Not only does The Destroyer Pedal give you the ability to hit those notes, but it gives you more confidence because you know the equipment isn’t your limiting factor anymore.
If you play drums on Rock Band, go buy this right now. It makes the game that much more fun. Head over to rockbandpedal.net and pick one up right away.
