Reminder: Xbox Live Down Tomorrow

xbox_360_live1

In case you had some ideas of playing Halo, Left 4 Dead, Gears of War, Call of Duty, or whatever it is you’re playing now on your Xbox 360, don’t forget that Xbox Live will be down tomorrow, possibly all day.

Microsoft is doing some maintenance and upkeep on their servers to prepare for all the new shit they announced at E3 (Facebook, Twitter, Last.Fm, vibrator support with streaming porn). Live will be going down at midnight tonight PT (that’s 3am ET) and could be down for up to 24 hours. It sucks that it goes down the day Ghostbusters is getting released, because it’s pretty fun online (check back for our review tomorrow).

Xbox Live Downtime – Prepping for the New Xbox Experience

Xbox Live is going down on Monday to get some massive server upgrades and software overhauls to prepare for the upcoming New Xbox Experience. From the one and only Larry Hyrb (better know as Major Nelson):

On Monday, 9/29/2008 from 12:01 AM PST for up to 24 hours, Xbox Live will be offline for maintenance. As a result, Xbox LIVE and the ‘My Xbox’ section of Xbox.com will be unavailable, and the Xbox forums will be in read only mode (you won’t be able to post.) The remainder of Xbox.com will be available with limited interruptions.

This service maintenance is in preparation for the new Xbox experience which will be available later this fall.

Let me reiterate: When the service returns, you will not have any new features and you will not have the new Xbox experience update. That will happen later this Fall.

So don’t plan on playing online with your Xbox 360 on Monday. I’m betting we get the update sometime in October. If we go by past dash updates, things usually come out around a week or two after the scheduled maintenance on the servers. We’ll see what happens.

PSN Offline Today for Maintenance

The PSN is going to be taken down today from 8am – 2pm PT. That’s 11am – 5pm ET for those keeping score. This is some scheduled maintenance, most likely paving the way for firmware v2.40 that’s supposed to hit a PS3 near you fairly soon.

During the downtime, you won’t be able to access the PlayStation Store or play any games online. Friends list, voice chat, etc. will all be down too, but you probably guessed that one, didn’t you?

Sony hasn’t made any announcements yet about when v2.40 will hit, but I’d expect it in the next couple weeks, probably before E3. I have a feeling there’s other things in store duing that keynote…

Xbox Live Scheduled Maintenance on Monday

Xbox Live Logo

Xbox Live is set to have some scheduled maintenance on Monday in the wee hours of the morning. The service will be down from 2am until 10am PT (that’s 5am through 1pm ET for those keeping score).

There will be absolutely no changes to the Xbox Live service or your Xbox 360 dashboard or Xbox.com after the downtime. This is scheduled maintenance on the servers. I repeat, this will NOT give you any new features on your 360. This is NOT the Spring Dashboard update.

So what can you do Monday morning while Live is down? Maybe sleep? Go to work? Diddle yourself silly to 2 girls 1 cup? Whatever floats your boat.

PlayStation Store Down Until Tomorrow

PS3 New Store 1

Don’t bother trying to hit up the PlayStation Store on the PS3 or PC today, you won’t get anywhere. Starting this morning and going until tomorrow morning, the Store will be offline as everything gets updates.

You know what that means? Firmware update with the new Store is coming tomorrow. Hell yes. Can’t wait for the update and definitely can’t wait for Store updates to resume this Thursday.

I wonder if the redesigned store, now being a native app, could mean we’ll see updates occur throughout the week and not just Thursdays?

Site Downtime

Server Rack

You might have noticed a slight bit of downtime today here at Loot Ninja. A normal update didn’t go so well and lots of files got corrupted. I’m still in the process of restoring a bunch of files right now, so some images might not show up properly.

If you see something that doesn’t work, please let us know either in the comments here or via the contact form. We’ll have everything back up working as soon as possible. Bear with us.

[Update] Undertow is What You Get for Broken Xbox Live

Undertow Screen

Remember Xbox Live being broken for a little over 3 weeks? I sure do. And remember that letter than Microsoft’s General Manager of Xbox Live, Marc Whitten, promising a free Xbox Live game? The wait to find out what game we’re getting is finally over.

Undertow will be available beginning next Wednesday, 2:00 a.m. PST through Sunday, 11:59 p.m. PST for free to all Xbox Live members worldwide. This includes you Silver members too.

What’s upsetting is they’re giving away a game that was released in November 2007. So you either have it already, or you don’t want it. Great way to smooth things over, Microsoft. They really should have given everyone any game they wanted up to 800 Microsoft Points. That would have made everyone happy. Let us know your thoughts on getting this game to make up for 3 weeks of no Xbox Live.

[UPDATE}

Many XBL owners already purchased Undertow. The obvious next question is what do they do? Chances are the hardcore owners who already bought the game are probably the most affected by the outage. Majornelson promises that MS will “take care” of those who already bought it. Here is a direct link to a comment made by Major himself.

Xbox Live – Day 15 of Crappy Service

Xbox Live Logo

It’s been 15 days now and Xbox Live still isn’t back to normal. It’s hard to believe that it’s just more users over the Holidays, since most people have gone back to work and school and the service is still messed up. According to the Xbox Support page right now:

Xbox Live and Zune Marketplace users will experience billing related transaction failures, including but not limited to: Purchase of premium download content, music, and account management, including account creation, renewal, and recovery; additionally users may experience issues with matchmaking and statistics related transactions.

Don’t plan on buying anything from the Marketplace right now, because you can’t. Matchmaking is also messed up, so if you’re trying to play online, you might not be able to get into a game. I personally can’t login. So I guess I won’t be doing that Halo 3 co-op I had planned for the day.

Does anybody really think one arcade game is enough for this insane amount of downtime? There’s already a lawsuit going against Microsoft for these problems. It all seems stupid to me… how could they not have the foresight to see the need for upgrading the servers?

Xbox Live Downtime Makes Xbox.com Annoying

Xbox Live Logo

Ever since the downtime for Xbox Live a couple days ago, Xbox.com has become increasingly annoying. It’s even slower than it was before (which is hard to accomplish). The other thing that really bugs me is having to put in my Windows Live password every single time I open a browser and load the page.

For the record, I’m not clearing or blocking cookies. I’ve tested this in Firefox, Opera, and Safari and am getting the same thing with all browsers. I haven’t tested IE, so anyone out there with Windows: please let me know how it goes there.

I thought these scheduled downtimes were improvements to the system? I was really expecting things to at least speed up.

Xbox Live Downtime – September 10th

Xbox Live Logo

If you sign on to Xbox Live, you should have a new message from the service letting you know of some scheduled downtime on September 10th.

Xbox Live will be going down for a service upgrade on September 10, 2007 starting at 2:01 PDT and lasting for approximately 4 hours.

So if you planned on playing into the wee hours of the morning (on the left coast) next Monday, you might want to revise your plans. Hopefully it will only take 4 hours this time, but who knows. The past 2 scheduled downtimes for Xbox Live ended up being a whole lot longer than scheduled. Expect human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together – mass hysteria.
