BioWare today announced the next installment of Dragon Age: Origins DLC, Return to Ostagar. Set for release on all platforms this Holiday, fans of the game will have even more content for one of the best RPG’s of the year. From the press release:
Return to Ostagar, BioWare’s next thread in the Dragon Age: Origins tapestry, summons players to a new quest in which they will return to the fateful battleground in Ostagar where the Grey Wardens were nearly wiped out. Players will discover King Cailan’s top-secret political agenda and go behind enemy lines to revisit a place that many feared had been lost to history.
I haven’t had a chance to play Dragon Age: Origins yet, but Karl thinks it’s the bees knees. Yeah, I just wrote that. Don’t judge me. So save up $4.99 to buy this new content pack pretty soon.
If you have gotten your hands on Left 4 Dead 2 and have played just smidgen of the Dark Carnival campaign, you have probably heard of the band Midnight Riders. I don’t know if it’s THE Midnight Riders or just Midnight Riders, but the point is, the band is mentioned throughout the campaign as one of Ellis’ favorites. He goes on and on with his lengthy diatribes while he’s getting eatin’ up by zombies about how awesome the band is. Hell, you even get to take on a zombie climax event on one of their stages with pyrotechnics and everything!
I was recently popping around on the internet and saw a new website for the Midnight Riders seen here. The site is actually owned by Valve Corporation and is one of their 198 domains. The site is legit. We don’t know in what context yet, but it is legit. When you head on over to the site you can see that down below the riders we are given the menacing message “Coming Soon”. Is this Left 4 Dead 2 DLC already in the making? Are we going to be able to play as the Midnight Riders through the campaign? Will this be a whole new set of campaigns telling the story of the Midnight Riders and their escape to freedom? We will find out soon, and we will keep you informed at Loot Ninja.
I’m personally hoping that at least there will be a sequence of getting on the band’s tour bus only to find zombie groupies wanting to have sex with you. That would be awesome! Hey, don’t judge me! Things still work down there even if they are flesh eating zombies. I got some flesh……IN MY PANTS!
Tomorrow morning you’ll be able to fire up your Xbox 360 and download the remaining tracks from Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. You’ll have to wait on the PS3 since the store doesn’t update until Thursday. Still undecided on the purchase? Check out a gameplay trailer that Harmonix just shipped over.
I never really understood the appeal of Achievements, but one thing is for sure: they can help reveal game releases earlier than the actual release. In this case, GTA4.net has a screenshot of what is apparently the Games For Windows Live achievement list for The Lost and the Damned.
Now, I happened to really like Grand Theft Auto 4, and I was pretty bummed when I heard the Xbox 360 DLC was Xbox 360 exclusive. Now, I’m kind of happy – although after reading about The Lost and the Damned, I’m kind of bummed again. I was hoping for an entire GTA game centered around Brucie. Genetically different, baby!
In news that came completely out of left field, Naughty Dog has stated that DLC for Uncharted 2 can be expected this calendar year. I never saw that one coming. In an interview with IndustryGamers, the game’s Creative Director, Amy Hennig, had this to say:
We’re working on that now, and what we’re prepared to say is that there will be DLC available before the end of the year. Without going into specifics, it’ll involve new maps, new characters, things like that. Some of it will be free of charge and some of it will be purchasable.
I’m in for new maps and hopefully some new co-op environments. The character skin unlocks don’t really do much for me now, so I doubt I’d buy any those. If they’re free, I’ll definitely download, but not for any cash.
Are you excited for this year’s DLC? Did you see it coming a mile away like I did?
That’s way too many capital letters for my liking. SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Confrontation is getting a new DLC pack soon on the PS3. The COLD FRONT pack promises to bring a shit-ton of new content for $14.99:
New Russian / Eastern European Area of Operation
Snow setting complete with snow effects, new snow gear and camo for both the Special Forces and Mercenaries, and thermal vision
New ARMS RUN gameplay mode
5 New Maps: Uprising, Entrapment, Blizzard, Night Stalker, Vigilance
All new mercenaries characters with new looks and new VO.
New Special Forces squad, the Russian Spetsnaz
Gun turrets emplacements
New music
All new character specialization/progression system
Allows players to pick a primary and secondary specialization and unlock new equipment exclusive to those specializations
New weapons, including: 3 new weapons, 6 enhanced versions of weapons available as part of the new weapons specialization system, 2 new weapon attachments (including the thermal scope), 5 enhanced versions of weapon attachments also available as part of the new weapons specialization system.
2 new grenade launcher ammo types (flash and smoke)
New Trophies
I haven’t touched SOCOM since launch and I don’t know if new content will bring me back. There are plenty of other games out drawing my attention, like Uncharted 2, Critter Crunch, Halo 3: ODST, and the upcoming Modern Warfare 2. I will say that this is a lot of content for the money, so hardcore SOCOM players should be pleased. Given that up until recently, Confrontation was one of the most played games on the PSN, I have a feeling this should sell quite a bit.
Borderlands hasn’t hit store shelves yet, but that didn’t stop Gearbox and 2K from announcing the first round of downloadable content for the RPG shooter. The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned is currently in development and will be released later this year for $9.99 (or 800 Microsoft Banana Bucks). From the press release:
Tasked with keeping the workers of Jakobs Cove alive, Dr. Ned (who is not related to Dr. Zed from Fyrestone) does his job a little too well, creating zombies and other abominations that now run rampant in this region. Players will have to work alongside Dr. Ned as they embark on a quest to cure the inhabitants of Jakobs Cove in this full-fledged expansion filled with new enemies, new quests and rare loot drops.
It sounds like Gearbox is going to be releasing Fallout 3 style DLC packs, each adding new areas, missions, and weapons. I have no problem with this model whatsoever. Just hearing about DLC for Borderlands makes me want Tuesday to be here already. Not only is it Borderlands day, it’s my birthday!
Of all the horrible and shitty trends plaguing the game industry these days, none make me lose as much sleep as the horrible and shitty idea of having exclusive content based on pre-orders and the location of the game’s purchase.
I mean, what is the deal with exclusive in-game content anyway? (And airline food, of course.) I learned to stomach the idea of “DLC” a while ago, small bits of overpriced content addons usually released to expand a games lifespan, but for some reason, this exclusive shit doesn’t sit right with me.
As a gamer, I realize that developers are regular people like you or I working for a paycheck, and that game studios and publishers need to make a profit on their product. As a consumer of video games, I find it bullshit that this type of marketing practice is becoming so popular. Collectors editions are fine – but don’t make me have to purchase a game at a specific location in order to experience the full game.
Fallout 3 is finally getting DLC for the PS3 version of the game starting next week. Bethesda today pushed out a patch for the game to optimize a few things as well as add Trophy support for the DLC. Next week, Broken Steel drops, so you’ll be able to run up to level 30 with the first DLC package. The follow week (October 1st), both Operation: Anchorage and The Pitt will be released. Finally, on October 8th, Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta will be available to purchase. That is a ton of content in a short period of time.
To go along with the PS3 DLC, Bethesda finally confirmed the release date for the Game of the Year editions, which will be available at retail starting October 14th. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions will run you $59.99 while the PC version will be $49.99. The GoTY editions contain all DLC, so it’s a nice bargain if you want to wait a bit longer on the PS3 and pick up the game.
This weekend I took off my pants, propped my feet up, and spent most of my Saturday in front of my PS3. Really there should be chicks involved, as well as sex, but you don’t have time for those sort of things when you are playing a video game for 7 hours straight! I just couldn’t get enough of the Batman: Arkham Asylum story missions and finding Joker challenges strewn around the island. I started at 21% completed and when I turned off the PS3 for supper, I was at around 53%. The story campaign of Batman: Arkham Asylum is pretty deep and varied so it should extend well over the 20 to 25 hour range (I’ve already put in about 12 hours or so). I purposefully am taking my time, soaking in all of the nuances of Batman and the Gotham universe.
Adding even more gameplay to the mix, are the challenge maps (or ass kicking rooms as I call them). These are where you take on a few of Joker’s henchmen with the difficulty getting progressively harder to get the FreeFlow combat system multiplier and score up. Eidos Interactive and Warner Bros. Interactive have just announced that two brand new challenge maps are coming soon in the form of the Insane Night Map Pack.
