Bea Arthur (May 13, 1922 – April 25, 2009)

We at Loot Ninja would like to pay tribute to the passing of Bea Arthur. She was a comedienne. She was an actress. She was a winner. She was the entire package. Her first big break came with the show Maude and then Golden Girls. Below is the theme from Maude and then the theme when Family Guy lampooned it.

The world now seems like a little less bright without Beatrice, so we wanted to say thank you. Thank you for being a friend.

R.I.P. George Carlin

George Carline

It’s a sad day. One of the funniest men ever, George Carlin, has passed away of heart failure at age 71. Carlin went into the hospital in the afternoon complaining of chest pains and died that evening.

We’ve all been influenced by George Carlin in some way. His stand up comedy routines are that of legend. I have a feeling we’ll get a nice treat of an HBO marathan soon, since he’s had more HBO comedy specials than anyone else.

Rest in peace my friend.

RIP My Xbox 360 Elite

Smashed Xbox 360

After just over 5 months, my Xbox 360 Elite has kicked the bucket. I get disk read errors on every disk I put in the tray, whether it’s a game, movie, or audio disk. Good times.

This marks my 6th Xbox 360 to die since launch day. Yes, my 6th. F’ing ridiculous.

I know some people are going to jump all over this in comments saying I treat it badly or whatever, but that is far from the case. My Xbox 360 has it’s own shelf in the entertainment center, with full ventilation from the front and rear. The power brick also sits on the shelf fully ventilated. The console is never moved when playing (in fact, it’s only moved a tiny bit once a week to dust). The console is kept perfectly clean, as are my other systems. I haven’t had any problems with my PS3 (save long install times) or my Wii. Never had problems with my PS2, Xbox, or Gamecube before that.

I guess I’ll be making a trip to Best Buy this afternoon to get this thing swapped out. Maybe #7 will be a lot luckier than the first 6 consoles I’ve gone through. At least I didn’t get the red ring of death again this time.

Colin McRae Killed in Helicopter Crash Along With Son

colin-mcrae.jpgWe are sad to report that Colin McRae, the renown Rally racer was killed on Saturday in a helicopter crash along with his 5 yr old son. Colin was 39 years old at the time and leaves a wife, Alison and daughter, Hollie behind. Colin McRae was an avid video gamer and had his own gaming line. Codemasters, who developed his games, released this statement today:

Everyone at Codemasters, especially those who worked directly with Colin McRae, is deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic events of Saturday 15th September 2007.

The loss of Colin McRae is deeply distressing. That it involved his son and another so young makes it even more tragic. Our thoughts are with his family and those closest to him and we share in their pain.

For over ten years, Colin was part of the Codemasters family and it was a privilege to have a man recognised as a true legend on the team. He always took a keen interest in the game experience, wanting to make sure it was without equal in its portrayal of the sport.

His contribution was inspirational and brought his technical expertise and passion for rally driving to each and every McRae game. Through the popularity of those games, he brought a whole new audience to the sport itself.

Codemasters’ relationship with Colin began through Jim, David and Richard Darling and their condolences, along with ours, are passed to Colin’s family. We are heavy of heart at his passing but we are also brimming with pride at knowing him and to have played a small role in his life.

He will never be forgotten by all at Codemasters.

The prayers of the entire Loot Ninja Family go out to the family and friends of Colin McRae.

R.I.P Vince McMahon Jr.’s Sense of Decency

Turns out, the CEO of the WWE is not really dead.  His alleged car bombing last week on Monday Night RAW was a staged event and he is alive and well, probably swimming in his pool of twenty dollar bills.  I have not really followed wrestling for the past 7 or so years ever since there roster has grown to Mormon sized proportions, but I saw an actual news report from a very reputable news service that Vince McMahon had been killed in a car bombing.  Maybe being a little naive, I checked around and sure enough it was a stunt.  Since when did car bombings become fodder for story lines in pro wrestling?  I am fully aware that professional wrestling is not real and its a soap opera for men, but this seemed a little much.  There are people out there right now who fully believe that this man is really dead.  This isn’t a “Who shot Mr. Burns” thing, this is real people thinking a man has been killed. Remember Owen Hart? Brother of Bret “The Hitman” Hart and long time wrestler? He fell to his death in 1999 onto a ring post from a botched stunt.  This guy seemed pretty upset(Click on the picture for video)

Go to www.wwe.com and read about tonight’s program.  They don’t tell you this is a hoax.  Is it even legal to fake a fake death?  During a time where bombings and assassinations are a reality, playing on the emotions of people may just have over stepped the bounds. Furthermore, I am not a bleeding heart liberal. I’ll be voting republican next November.  People accuse video games of being too realistic and are the source of all the world’s problems.  At least we know the game isn’t real.  I don’t have to do a google search to see if the Covenant have landed.

Xbox 360 Elite Prone to Same Problems as Others

Xbox 360 Elite Contents Large ImageWe’ve had numerous reports coming in of users getting 3 red lights on their brand new Elite consoles this morning. While this is a daily occurrence with 360 Premium and Core systems, we thought Microsoft would have had a better handle on the situation with the Elite.

We’ve all seen the pictures of the motherboard changes. I assumed that these would protect the console better from heat and such to make sure less consoles would die. But alas, no. Microsoft has introduced another new product that is failing at a higher than normal rate.

To top it all off, the disc scratching issue is back. Seriously Microsoft, what the hell? Did you completely get rid of your QA department?

360 = Uber Death

So, today, after a semi-long gaming session with my 360 (about 4 hours), she decided it was time to go to the big pie in the sky. I’ve been hit with the 3 red lights on my 360. No, this isn’t the first time. It’s not the second either. HELL, it’s not even the third. This is my 4th fucking Xbox 360 to die. Seriously, this is out of control. My 360 is housed in it’s own shelf in my entertainment center, with ample air flow. The power brick is also housed there, separated nicely, also with a lot of airflow. Everything is run through a Monster Power Center with Voltage Regulator. So there’s absolutely no issues with power or air flow causing these fucking things to die.

I honestly don’t know a single person who still has their launch 360. I know there’s a lot of people that do, but no one on my friends list or anyone I’ve personally spoken to have their original box. This 3-5% failure rate Microsoft is talking about is bullshit.

Thankfully I got the Best Buy warranty when I had to buy another 360 (my first died after the 90 days, and well before they upped the factory warranty to 1 year). I’ll be taking this one in tomorrow to swap it out.

I’ve never seen consoles die like this. My PS3 and Wii see about as much gaming as my 360, and they’re running strong. My launch PS2 and launch Xbox (v1) are still running strong. The 360 has some serious hardware issues. I’m willing to bet Microsoft never acknowledges it. Hopefully the Zephyr will resolve a lot of the issues, but I doubt it. Microsoft has a terrific track record of not doing any QA work on their products.

Anna Nicole Smith Found Dead

While not technological or gaming related, it’s newsworthy to note that Anna Nicole Smith was found dead today in her hotel room in Florida. She had checked into the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, on Monday with her lawyer and boyfriend Howard K. Stern (not to be confused with Hoo Hoo). She was 39 years old. No word on the cause of death yet, but an autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

It’s sad when anyone dies. Our condolences to her family and friends.
