Ever wonder what the old school arcade days might have looked like back in the day? I’m not talking about the days of Contra in the arcade, but more like the days of Pong and the real early classics. As a child of the 80’s I had seen plenty of arcades in my day, but I can’t say that I had ever seen the original Pong in working condition, well all of that changed on my latest tip to San Franciso, I stumbled across an old school arcade complete with old wooden games and fortune tellers. This as the eqivalt a video game hall of fame and I could d othin mre than to just snap pictures and yell out “holy shiet, I can’t believe they have this!”

Contra 4 for the Nintendo DS is the 20th anniversary of Contra and brings to the table a very decent game that stands alone and is not a remake of any of the previous titles. There are 9 brand new levels, (the jungle, laboratory, base, harbor, ocean, factory, city, alien hive and harvest yard) that definitely take cues from some of the original titles, but have their own sense of style. You still control the usual suspects; Lance, Bill, Scorpion and Mad Dog, but this time you are up against the Black Viper and a new set of alien scum.
The game is broken into three difficulties: easy, normal and hard, although there is nothing easy about this title. Contra 4 lives up to it’s predecessors and is a very challenging game. On my first run through on normal I barely made it through the first stage using almost all of my continues. Contra brings you some hard hitting side scrolling running and gunning right ot your DS, as a huge Contra fan I had to get my hands on this and so far I am very pleased and recommend this for any DS owner. You can now play wireless 2 player co-op action with a buddy, which should help you get through the game and unocking some of those bonuses in the game.
Nintendo is replying - here they are, now shut up!
This is a huge list of games that will put the library of Wii titles close to 150 (not counting Virtual Console games) and the DS titles close to 450.
I thnk Nintendo really wants to show everyone that not only Nintendo developed games are scheduled ot hit the console but also a lot of third party games as well, many have speculated that third party developers would shy away from the unique controls.
Here is the all encompassing list of games scheduled to come out for the Wii and the DS until the first quarter of next year.

After hearing MS brag about their best lineup in history it got me thinking, throughout the years we have had different eras in gaming and consoles, which is everyone’s favorite?
For some their favorite will be the newest cutting edge technology, the nostalgia of the old 8 bit consoles, the progression to 16 bit or the classic old school Atari days. This can be viewed from many aspects like, games, hardware or just pure preference.
For this editor I think my favorite era of gaming has to be the NES and Sega Master System days. This opened the world of gaming to my eyes and got me really hooked, I can recall spending hours playying Ninja Gaiden and Contra, while discussing with my cousin which was the better system between the two. (I was always the Nintendo owner)
OK, if you have played Super Paper Mario you know that he really isn’t made of paper in the game, well this guy took the concept t the extreme and created an entire Mario level complete with music using some post-it notes.
Can I request a post-it stage of Contra? Any other requests?
I have been playing Super Contra on my Xbox 360 since it launched a few weeks ago on LIVE arcade and I am still missing two of the achievements. The two I am missing is getting to the fourth level and beating hte game using only 1 credit. The game is super tough and I continue to try and play through with little success, to make myself feel better I put on the older Contra game and beat that fairly easily. It also looks like my first place rank in Co-op has been knocked down a few notches to 20th overall, if anyone wants ot get a co-op game in and try to reclaim the top spot, just shoot me a message. This game is pretty close to beating my spirit!!!
Our Contra, UNO, and Fuzion Frenzy 2 Contest is now closed. Thanks to everyone who entered! We’ll be going over the entries over this week and will announce the winner as soon as possible. Make sure to check back and check your email to find out if you won!

Super Contra is another great addition to the Xbox 360 Live Arcade and I say this as both a huge fan of Contra and a gamer. Super Contra sticks to it’s roots and brings the run and gun the same way the original Contra port did. One huge difference between this port and the original is the difficulty, Super Contra may kill your friends so be careful. The game borders on impossible at times especially if you play with someone inexperienced.
Presentation and Graphics: Super Contra was given a face lift to the real of HD and let me say the difference is noticeable. The game still is no match for a full priced game, but as far as arcade titles go it is up there. The explosions and gun effects are all nicely done. 3 of 5
Sound and Music: The music is spot on to give you that Contra feel and so are the explosions. For an old game I still love hearing the Contra ttheme music. 3.5 of 5
Ok so I spent quite a few hours playing Super Contra from the Xbox Arcade and let me say this is one of the most frustrating Contra games ever because of it’s insane difficulty. But after many attempts at the different stages and getting a feel for the different guns and where the enemies spawn I completed the entire game over Xbox Live (shout out to my buddy Quildar for beating this with me). As if this hard fought victory wasn’t sweet enough, I checked the Leaderboards for Super Contra and saw we were the #1 & #2 ranked coop players on LIVE.
Here is a shot of the leaderboard.
I know we won’t last long at the #1 spot, but it still is nice to grab the top spot on an Xbox leaderboard. I still have 2 achievements left to complete and they are in arcade mode, so you will catch me playing some more Super Contra real soon.
