Comics Pwn Games: 3 Things the World of Gaming Needs to Learn From the World of Comic Books

I’m not really a comic book reader at all, I’ve probably bought five of them in my whole life with the last one being at least fifteen years ago.  In fact, I had to call my comic book fan friend, Jesse Hubberd (thanks Jesse), just to be sure that I had all of my facts and timing straight.  This is written from a gamer’s perspective for gamers and is just a few observations on things that our fellow geeks have gotten right and we need to learn from.

#1. THE GATHERING

Comic-Con is a legitimate entertainment event.  Last year’s event boasted 126,000 attendees and quite a few celebs.  It is a place where sneak preview trailers are shown to fans as big Hollywood players wait anxiously for the verdict of the geek.  That said, the news_this_week that E3 is trying to return to its former glory is something that should have all gamers rejoicing.  It does not mean that instantly it will rival Comic-Con in relevance, (though I hope some day it might), it just means that gaming finally has its big show back.  E3 was, and hopefully again will be, THE place each year where game developers better bring their big guns, and a place for gaming to get its time in the spotlight.

Gears of War Getting the Comic Book Treatment

Gears of War Screen

Want to see some locusts get jacked up in cool art styles? Your chance is coming as DC Comics will be brining Marcus, Dom, and all your favorite chainsaw wielding heroes to the comics. The series is set to come from DC’s WildStorm publishing imprint in October.

“Big guns and monsters — what a perfect comic book for WildStorm! We have an opportunity to work closely with Epic to add to the canon of the Gears of War mythos, so you can imagine how excited we all are, said Hank Kanalz, VP – General Manager, WildStorm. “Epic sets the bar very high, in graphics, story, and gameplay — and expect no less from our series, starting with our lead-in arc that fills in the gaps between the first game and the upcoming sequel.”

Could be good. Hopefully they come up with a good storyline and don’t just take what’s in the games.

Mortal Kombat Takes on DC Comics Superheroes

The next Mortal Kombat game pretty much isn’t. Very little blood, no fatalities. Yeah, super gimped. The reason? The MK fighters are taking on the DC Comics Superheroes. So far, we have Sub Zero and Scorpion confirmed for Mortal Kombat characters and Superman and Batman confirmed for DC Comics characters. It could be good, but it could also suck hard. I’d like to get some decent hands on time before I cast any judgement.

Penny Arcade on PC Ugrades

Penny Arcade on PC Ugrades Comic

We don’t usually post comics here, but today’s Penny Arcade hits the nail on the head when it comes to PC upgrades. To play a lot of the titles this Holiday season, you’re going to need one killer rig.

It’s a bit over the top, but this is one of the reasons I slowed my uptake of PC games and moved to consoles. I just don’t have the time, funds, or desire to keep upgrading my PC.

Hop on over the Penny Arcade to see a bigger version of the comic (in case your puny eyes can’t read it here).

Sega breaks silence on acquring Marvel Characters

marvel-and-sega.jpgLoot-ninja brought you this article 2 weeks ago about Sega adding some of Marvel’s beloved characters.  Now, we get an explanation.  Our friends at Gamespot.com bring you this candid interview on the rationale behind signing these characters and more importantly what they plan to do with them. Enjoy!

SEGA’s pimp hand is getting stronger. The Hulk, Capt America, and Thor added to stable.

sega.jpg Sega has just announced that it has signed multiyear deals with The Hulk, Capt America, and Thor. While it is still funny that a fictional character can sign a deal, nonetheless, they are now apart of Sega who is trying to revitalize the once proud company.   Yahoo reports that Sega has officially added the three to its company and hopes to make movies and next gen games.  There is a new Hulk movie coming out in 2008 with Ed Norton playing Bruce Banner.  There is also a next gen game planned as well with the release of the movie.  No word yet on a Thor or Captain America movie, just speculation and rumors, but the Hulk movie is already under contract.  With so many comic book based movies and games either out and on the horizon(most of them suck), this could usher in a new era with the some old characters we have not seen done yet in the 21st century.
