Review: Resident Evil 5 (Xbox 360, PS3)

Resident Evil 5 Screen 10

Resident Evil has been a staple in the horror franchise and holds the title as the measuring stick for making you fudge your skivvies at a moment’s notice. I will never forget when I was playing the original RE on PS1 and my friend started crying and made us turn the lights on when the dogs jumped through the wall. Needless to say, that was the last time that pussy ever got invited to a sleepover. RE5 makes the foray into next gen. It looks like we all thought it would, but at the same time, it does not feel and play like we all thought it would. The game is still great, just not the killer app I was expecting.

Review: Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop (Wii)

dead-rising-ctyp-box

CAN I GET MY PICTURE TAKEN WITH THIS ZOMBIE? NO? THEN WHAT’S WITH THE CAMERA?!

I kind of rolled my eyes when I first received this game from Matt. I played it for a few minutes and immediately wrote it off as a crappy port of the Xbox 360 favorite. A day or so later I decided to play through so I could effectively write a review. Much to my surprise, I found that although it was far from a perfect game, Dead Rising: CTYD was actually pretty damn fun to play.

I do all these editorials on this site with themes of patience and not judging a book by its cover. I’m glad I took my own advice for once. So click on the link to see if you should or shouldn’t make a rental/purchase (and what to expect if you do).

Capcom Under Fire for Resident Evil 5 Versus Mode

Resident Evil 5 Versus Mode Screen

Capcom is getting a bit of flack from both gamers and press for the upcoming Versus Mode addition to Resident Evil 5. For $4.99 (400 MS Points), you’ll be able to play competitively online in 2v2 matches. Many people are arguing that this content should have been included with the game. Speaking to CVG, Capcom had this to say about the issue:

Although Versus mode makes use of the assets that exist in the game, the functionality is not currently in the game and is above and beyond the initial scope of Resident Evil 5. [...] We have never included a Versus mode in Resident Evil before, and as well as the costs of development of the feature, there’s also additional bandwidth costs associated with it.

Whether they’ve ever included it or not, talking about paid multiplayer on the day of release is a bit shady. And with all the people, myself included, who really hate the controls, I can’t see paying $5 to play against other people online.

Review: Street Fighter IV

Developer: Dimps/Capcom Publisher: Capcom
Release Date: 02/17/2009 Platforms: PS3, XBOX 360, PC

Hey baby, do you like Street Fighter? They call me ‘The Hadoken’ because I’m down, right, fierce…

Well, It’s finally here everybody. The first true sequel in the Street Fighter series since 1997. I’m more than pleased to say that Street Fighter IV lives up to almost all the huge expectations that have been placed upon it in past months. Capcom had successfully whet our appetites with the outstanding Super Street Fighter II: Turbo HD Remix. They now stand poised to show us what a real current-gen fighting game is supposed to look and play like.

And hot damn, we had no idea what we’ve been missing. Check this out.

SSFIITHDR Dev Rips Street Fighter IV

street_fighter_4_vdhalsim

Some dissension among the ranks over at Capcom. David Sirlin, the designer behind Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, had some not so nice things to say about Street Fighter IV. Mainly, the game is overly complex and difficult.

Qcf x 2 +PPP all the time, extra button presses to throw, extra button presses to roman cancel, and many, many extremely difficult link combos work in concert to create that impenetrable wall of execution between you and the actual game (the interaction between you and your opponent). I wish we could get rid of all this stuff and focus more on the gameplay itself.

I can’t say I disagree completely. Some of the Ultra Combo button presses are a bit tough for first time and casual fighting game fans. The difficulty issue is definitely a real one, as getting through on Medium is a chore for even some seasoned fighting game veterans.

Is Lost Planet 2 Exclusive to the Xbox 360? Capcom Won’t Say

Lost Planet 2 Screen

Reports are flying that Lost Planet 2 is exclusive to the Xbox 360, it’s not exclusive, it’s coming to the Atari 2600 and Colecovision. Who knows anymore. Edge was tired of the drama, so they asked Capcom to come clean.

All we can say at this time is that we’ve announced Lost Planet 2 for the 360. That’s all I can say.

Capcom’s press release was carefully worded to say the game is “being developed for the Xbox 360”. As the company stated last September, all future big titles would go multiplatform. Hell, the MT Platform, the proprietary engine used for Lost Planet 2, was made to facilitate cross platform development. Whether this ends up as a timed exclusive or Microsoft just secured the announcement timeframe, who knows at this point. I have a strong feeling, though, that Lost Planet 2 will end up on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC at some point.

Street Fighter IV Sells 2 Million Copies

Street Fighter 4 Screen 2

It is not often that a game lives up to its potential. It is even more rare when a game shatters expectations. You can put Street Fighter IV in the latter category. Capcom has released a statement saying that SF IV, the arcade phenom, has sold 2 million console copies. In today’s economic climate, that is nothing short of remarkable. Factor in that the game is a fighter as opposed to the more well versed genre such as FPS, MMO, etc.  Capcom killed it with SF IV. People are already buzzing how they plan to top it. Dead Rising 2 Announced for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360

It’s official, the sequel to the smash hit for the Xbox 360 has been announced for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Dead Rising 2 will take place several years after the original story line and this time around you won’t be Frank West.  The setting will be Fortune City, some sort of gambling paradise where zombies have spread.

The game is being developed by Blue Castle Games and a number of members from the original Dead Rising team are working alongside the new developers.  Keiji Inafune, the game’s original producer will supposedly play an active role in the continued development of the game.  Take a gander at the trailer which includes the infamous hamster ball.  The official press release will follow the jump.
