Roman numerals get me excited in more ways than you can imagine. So when I saw Battle Report IV for StarCraft II, I immediately went from six to midnight. Not just because of the Roman numerals, you sick people, but because StarCraft II could be the best RTS since, well, the first StarCraft. Here’s to hoping we get a Beta before the end of February.
Blizzcon 2009 is fast approaching, but who needs Blizzcon to start spreading rumors of the next World of Warcraft expansion? Apparently not the “source” over at WoW.com, which has it on “good” authority that the next expansion to Blizzard’s cash cow MMO will be World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. This is likely based on the trademark Blizzard filed a while back for that name. Also of note is the rumor of two new races – Goblins for the Horde and Worgen for the Alliance. If this is true, it dashes my past hopes that if the goblins were ever made playable, you would be able to choose which faction they would join after a Death Knight type of introduction story.
I hope you all opted-in for the StarCraft II Beta at Battle.Net, because Blizzard is getting ready to roll. We received an email from Blizzard PR preparing us for the much anticipated Beta, which was not given a release date yet.
With the gaming press being invited to sign up before June 19th, it’s safe to expect a public release before the end of the month. The best part is that there’s no NDA associated with the Beta, so we can bring you our thoughts on how StarCraft has evolved. It’s Blizzard, so I’m expecting them to bring the fire.
Blizzard has decided to start posting Battle Reports for Starcraft II. In this first one, you’ll get to see some of the developers playing Protoss vs. Terran. I know some of you out there (Max) will cream your pants for this. This is still an early Alpha version of the game, but it’s a great way to see what’s coming. I think I might have to fire up Brood War and play some online matches after watching this.
Activision Blizzard CEO Robert Kotick held an investor call after this weeks earnings announcements and this is one of his statements:
With respect to the franchises that don’t have the potential to be exploited every year across every platform with clear sequel potential that can meet our objectives of over time becoming $100 million plus franchises, that’s a strategy that has worked very well for us.
World of Warcraft players are creaming in their soiled drawers today as the latest v3.0.2 patch is now live. Dubbed Echoes of Doom, the 1.2 GB patch brings a new profession of Inscription, an in-game guild calendar, a barber shop, the long awaited achievement system, expanded talent trees, and a new location, Stormwind Harbor.
I’ve been downloading the patch for a little while and, as you can see, things aren’t going at breakneck speeds here. Guess I need to find something else to do with my time today…
I know a lot of you out there are creaming your pants waiting until late November when Wrath of the Lich King gets released. Al is stuffing his face with Red Bull and Cheetos trying to get to level 70 with his Hunter, I’m sitting pretty around level 12 with my Blood Elf (haven’t had a ton of time to play lately). If some of you are out there are making your own 80’s montage and getting fat and pimply like the kids in South Park trying to level up quickly, you’ll be happy to know you don’t need an insane PC to run the upcoming expansion pack.
PC:
Windows XP SP3 or Vista SP1 (Windows 2000 no longer supported)
Pentium 4 1.3 GHz or AMD Athlon XP 1.5 GHz (up from 800 MHz Intel/AMD). Dual-core recommended.
RAM: 512 MB/1 GB for Vista, same as before. 1 GB/2 GB recommended.
Video: GPU with hardware transform and lighting and 32 MB VRAM, same as before. Recommended 128 MB VRAM.
Mac:
Mac OS X 10.4.11 (10.3 no longer supported)
PowerPC G5 1.6 GHz or Intel Core Duo. G4s are no longer supported. Intel 1.8 GHz recommended.
You know that cool splash screen at Blizzard’s site we told you about? They announced today what the deal is: Diablo 3. Ok, go clean up your pants, I know they’re soiled. Yes, that’s right, Diablo is making a comeback and will be released simultaneously for Mac and PC. Hells yes, I’m rocking this on my Mac!
Check out the debut trailer and wait patiently until this one gets released. I’m betting late 2009 or maybe even 2010.
It seems that sometime last week Blizzard gave its website a little bit of a upgrade. They have now made some of their games available for purchase right on their site via download. When you think about it, that’s really no small thing. So far there are only a few games for purchase, but hopefully soon we’ll see others popping up for purchase (Diablo,Diablo,Diablo,Diablo,Diablo,Diablo…pardon me…hmmm). With a little bit of luck, perhaps other sites will follow suit. We’ll just have to wait and see I suppose.
So if you are in need of an expansion for your WOW game here it is – now you don’t even have to leave your basement. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or bad thing.
