Microsoft’s new Games on Demand service has been both praised and scorned by various members of the media. Regardless of how you look at the service, it’s worth investigating. We recently got a copy of BioShock for Games on Demand to test and were fairly happy with the whole experience. This won’t be a review of the game, as we’ve already done that twice (Xbox 360 and PS3), and as everyone knows it’s amazing. This review will instead focus on the Games on Demand service, how it compares to the disc-based version of the game, and how well it runs.
It’s hard to believe that there are many of you left out there who haven’t experienced Bioshock on some gaming platform yet, but since you have waited this long why not wait just a little while longer?
Feral Interactive had a booth at this year’s Macworld Expo and the exhibitors were conveniently wearing shirts with the iconic Big Daddy on the back. Macworld’s Chris Holt decided to dig a little deeper and talked to some of the Feral Interactive representatives. He was able to confirm that Bioshock is indeed going to make it’s way to the Mac platform sometime in the first half of this year.
The game originally shipped in August of 2007 for the Xbox 360 and PC. It would be an understatement to say that Mac gamers have always had to wait longer than the rest of the gaming world to have games ported to their platform of choice, but just be grateful one of the greatest single player experiences of this decade is even being ported at all.
Any fan of Bioshock who is also a fan of game related toys, i.e. MATT BANKS, needs to pick one of these up. A totally authentic and super creepy representation of the little girls from Bioshock you are supposed to save, err harvest. 10 bucks is not bad at all. Here is the link to the official store.
The Challenge Rooms for the PS3 version of BioShock are dropping on November 20th. Sadly, they’re going to cost you $9.99. Ouch. For what I expected to ship with the game after the initial announcements, it’s sad to see this costing extra loot. However, with that said, it’s worth the money. Here’s the skinny on the three Challenge Rooms:
A Shocking Turn of Events – A Little Sister is trapped atop a Ferris wheel in an undisclosed location in Rapture. Using only the tools and environment around them, players must use their wits to create electricity to power the Ferris wheel and bring the Little Sister to safety.
The I in Team – Using limited resources, and an even more limited arsenal, players must negotiate traps and find a way to defeat a Big Daddy using their wits instead of raw firepower.
Worlds of Hurt – Step up and take on the most grueling challenge offered in the world of Rapture. Players must battle through eight rooms of Big Daddies, Splicers and the worst that Rapture has to offer. Accumulate Adam, build an arsenal of Plasmids, Tonics and Weaponry, and fight through to rescue the Little Sister.
Some new Trophies are coming with the goods, so you can whore yourself out if you choose. Don’t forget, the graphics patch to make everything more gooder is coming November 20th as well. Get some. Full press release and more screens after the jump.
Bioshock was a monumental release for the Xbox 360 last September. Just over a year later, 2K Games’ masterpiece has been ported over to the delight of Sony fans everywhere. The question whether the game is worth buying was answered by the mountains of praise it has already received. Whether to buy the game for the PS3 is another question entirely. If you own a PS3 and do not own an Xbox 360, buy this game immediately.
2K released a new trailer for BioShock for the PS3 at Games Convention over in Leipzig. Nothing earth shattering or stuff we haven’t seen. What bothers me is the framerate. Yes, it’s just a trailer. But even the Xbox 360 trailers ran a nice normal framerate. Is 2K having issues getting the game up to speed on the PS3? Or did the video just encode bad? I’m hoping for the latter. October is coming up quick, so we’ll know sooner than later.
Thought to be a Xbox 360 exclusive, GOTY Bioshock has made its way across enemy lines and will be coming to the PS3 this October. With a new difficulty, new plasmids, and other surprises, we get a second chance at walking through Rapture, probably the last place on Earth I would want to visit in real life. PS3 owners will buy this in a heartbeat and even some envious owners of both systems might buy the PS3 version. Here is the “new” trailer for Bioshock. Enjoy this as we eagerly await the next installment, which some believe will be a prequel that tells the fall of Rapture.
As if you didn’t know this was coming, 2K confirmed that Trophies are definitely coming to BioShock. Yesterday on PlayStation.Blog, they confirmed what a few of them would be. The game will have all of them: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.
What I think is cool is that the team behind the game is rethinking the Trophies and not just using the same ones from the Xbox 360 Achievements. There will be a Gold Trophy called Brass Balls where you have to beat the game on Hard with the Vita-Chambers turned off. You have to really step it up to get that one.
2K is keeping many of the Trophies secret so as to not spoil the story. I’m sure they’ll all get leaked before the game’s release though.
Bioshock looked awesome on the Xbox 360. It will look even better on the PS3 when Digital Extremes steps in to help maximize the graphics. DE also helped on Unreal Championship and Dark Sector. This is what the head honcho over at Digital said when it was announced his company would be a part of the project:
“You really can’t ask for a more exciting, technically impressive world to work in than Rapture, and the incredible knowledge and talent between the 2K studios and our team at Digital Extremes is unprecedented. The collaboration on this project will make the PLAYSTATION 3 system sing with Big Daddy goodness and Little Sister ‘thank you’s’.”
Looks like I might have to take another trip through Rapture on my PS3. I can honestly say I am not that upset about it.
Bioshock 2 was announced just a few weeks ago and now Bioshock 3 has been slated making it a complete trilogy. When asked when the game would come out, Take 2 could not give any insight when. Furthermore, it is believed that the 3rd game will be released with the movie that will be based on the series.
”It’s unlikely that the picture would be released to coincide with BioShock 2,” said Zelnick. “It would be more likely that it would be released coincidentally with BioShock 3. That also remains to be seen.”
