Capcom has completely re-imagined their NES classic Bionic Commando. The game is coming this Spring and all the trailers and screenshots have us eagerly waiting to throw a tank and someone with our huge robotic arm. The demo is a taste of the multi player mode and we get to try out a map that takes place at night on top of a building. The game starts of with every Commando, all the players start out the same in very bright colored attire, scattered around the map. There are weapons strewn about as well as health and armor upgrades. The object is very simple. Kill as many of the other commandos as you can before the timer runs out.
Bionic Commando was one of the best side shooters to ever come out on the NES. Bionic Commando: Rearmed is one of the best XBLA titles to date. Bionic Commando for the next gen is looking better everyday. This trailer shows the evolution from then until now. Its remarkable how things have come in the past 20 years.
Bionic Commando for the NES (also known as Top Secret: Hitlers Revival in Japan) was a sequel to the popular arcade game of the same name in Japan (Top Secret). Not too many people remember that. What they do remember is the blistering difficulty the game was known for. Now I’m sure some of you were thinking “Hey, I’ve played that and it wasn’t too hard…pussy”. Those people can bite me. As I played through a couple of days ago, I’ll admit it wasn’t as hard as it used to be. But it was still goddamn hard. Remember, at the time, lots of us were used to Mario-esque platformers. And seeing as how Bionic Commando had no jump button, you can imagine the frustration. It wasn’t unlike ripping out one of our thumbs. But at the same time, we were introduced to the joys of killing Nazis in video games.
At Capcom’s Digital Day, they revealed a level of Bionic Commando: Rearmed where you play in a top-down manner. It’s looking pretty damn good if you ask me. I was a huge fan of the original on the NES, so I can’t wait to play the final version of the game this Spring.
Capcom seems content in making the PS3 version of Bionic Commando: Rearmed well superior to the Xbox 360 version. First we heard about the higher resolution textures due to the file size limits of the Xbox Live Arcade, and now this. According to MTV’s Multiplayer Blog, the NES classic remake will support Remote Play on your PSP.
I have to say, this seals the deal for me. I was leaning toward the PS3 version because of the better textures, but Remote Play is an amazing feature. I love PixelJunk Monsters over Remote Play and this will be no different. If you have a PS3 and a PSP, definitely check this out.
Capcom is solely responsible for the greatest selling arcade game to date, Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting, It has come to light that with a new installment of SF2 on the way, Turbo HD Remix, the game will not be as sharp on the Xbox 360. Capcom is none too pleased. Of course, MS countered with this comment:
Last I checked it was Capcom that had an exception to our file size with Street Fighter II [Hyper Fighting]…. We raised our limit to 150 megs, which seems pretty darn great…. I don’t think it has limited our games in any way. Look at Rez HD. Look at Poker Smash. Look at Undertow. These are very, very, very good games.
With Bionic Commando Arcade on the way, people are eager to see if there is a substantial framerate drop in the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. People had limitations and game devs are no exception. Expect a comparison video on this very soon.
Here is an early video release of actual gameplay from the much anticipated Bionic Commando. The purpose here, it seems, is to not beat the the level, just showcase the surroundings. The game looks like it could kick serious ass and the bionic arm figures to be a major part of combat. No date has been set yet, but we are hoping it comes out this fall if not sooner.
One of the best side scrollers ever made is coming to next gen via an arcade remake. The game has been completely re-imagined and the graphics are updated immensely. I do not purchase many XBLA games because most of them are either bad or way overpriced. This game may change all that. It will also tease the next gen release coming our way early this year.
Remember Bionic Commando on the NES? You got that cool grappling hook thing and you could swing wherever you wanted and basically kick some ass. Now, 20 something years later, you can do much of the same but this time there are very little limits. Check out this trailer from the upcoming game. Looks badass to me.
