2008’s Top Selling Games

The NPD Group released the top selling console video games for 2008. Going over this list, a few things popped into my mind. Have a look, then we’ll discuss.

  1. WII PLAY W/ REMOTE – 5.28 million
  2. WII MARIO KART W/ WHEEL – 5.00 million
  3. WII FIT W/ BALANCE BOARD – 4.53 million
  4. WII SUPER SMASH BROS: BRAWL – 4.17 million
  5. 360 GRAND THEFT AUTO IV – 3.29 million
  6. 360 CALL OF DUTY: WORLD AT WAR – 2.75 million
  7. 360 GEARS OF WAR 2 – 2.31 million
  8. PS3 GRAND THEFT AUTO IV – 1.89 million
  9. 360 MADDEN NFL 09 – 1.87 million
  10. NDS MARIO KART – 1.65 million

First off, only one PS3 game makes the list and only at 1.89 million units sold, which isn’t a good sign for Sony’s console. Second, and more importantly, is that a game released in November 2005 is still in the top 10 games sold in 2008. Mario Kart DS has some damn long legs. In my eyes, it’s the best Mario Kart, but still selling that many copies three years later? Just wow. Finally, Wii Play outsold both console versions of GTA IV combined. Impressive.

What are your thoughts? Remember, this is just for console games, so don’t go throwing that PC stuff in here. Those numbers aren’t out yet.

Metacritic’s Best and Worst of 2008

Metacritic has always been there for us.  You know you can always turn to Metacritic to help you make that final purchasing decision on a game.  You can also use it to help justify being a fanboy for a specific game or console.  There has been a bit of controversy surrounding the site as of late with all of the negative user reviews but who really cares what some random users have to say anyway?

I will have to preface this list with a few notes.  This is a best and worst of list according to scores, well at least most of them.  For some odd reason the Wii and PSP best of lists don’t actually go in order of best scores.  Also, instead of having a list of worst games we only get a single “Dud of the Year”.  I know, it is kind of disappointing because sometimes the most entertaining part of these lists is seeing the crappiest games of the year.  Without further ado, here is the best and worst of 2008 according to Metacritic.
