Fans of great games such as City of Heroes and City of Villians will be pleased to know that the developer that brought those titles to us will be financially solvent for years to come. Atari has struck a deal to acquire the small developing studio and this move keeps another very talented group of people in the industry with a much higher budget.
The acquisition of Cryptic Studios brings to Infogrames an outstanding creative organisation, with a proven track-record of success in the fast-growing MMO category,” said David Gardner, CEO of Infogrames/Atari in a statement. “Cryptic’s success is founded on leading-edge technology and the vision of a seasoned executive management team.
Does Bustin’ make you feel good? Do you wish you could relive 1984? Do you know what happens when you cross the streams? If you answered yes to any of these questions, prepare to be very excited.
When I first bought my PS2 at launch, the first game I bought was Ready to Rumble 2. I was addicted to that shit. I can’t tell you how many times I beat the game with every character. Knocking out the roided-up Michael Buffer was a good time. So when this press release hopped across my desk, I got extremely excited. Ready to Rumble Revolution will be hitting the Wii this Spring.
Sure to satisfy newcomers and boxing fans alike, Ready 2 Rumble Revolution features a roster of 18 wildly caricatured cartoony boxers based on celebrities from the worlds of sports, music and movies. Celebrities enter the ring as larger-than-life “Rumble-ized” versions of themselves. Players will step right up and see if they can knock these super-sized egos down a peg or two!
Hell yeah bitches. I am all over this one. I just hope they don’t go over the top with the motion controls and ruin the experience that the game has had in the past.
Atari sent over a fresh batch of screenshots and artwork for their upcoming survival/horror title Alone in the Dark. The game is based in New York City, particularly Central Park, where some nasty monsters invade and you have to take them down. The game is shipping June 24th for most platforms and looks to scare the hell out of you. Oh yeah, it’s pretty too.
Atari is running a contest right now where they implore their readers to send in the creepiest nature pictures you can find. They specifically request parks . They are probably keeping it to just nature so that they don’t get some borderline criminal shit. You know damn well people would be sending in things along the lines of “2 Girls, 1 Cup.” Do yourself a favor and don’t google that. Here is the link for the official rules. They have weekly winners and seem to be giving away game soundtracks(weak), but will probably up the ante when the game’s release draws closer.
Thanks Princess O for the news tip. You complete me.
Looks like Atari has no problem being fashionably late to the party, as they’ve announced they’ll be bringing an arsenal of PC games to Steam. Some games like RollerCoaster Tycoon are available now, with bigger titles like Neverwinter Nights coming soon.
“Atari is excited to team up with Steam and deliver great games through a digital platform that our fans have asked for,” said Nizzi Renaud, Vice President of Online Entertainment, Atari, Inc. “We look forward to making an extensive collection of games, across many genres, available to Steam’s extensive, globally-connected community.”
Steam really is the bees knees as far as PC gaming goes. The more companies that jump onboard, the better for everyone in the community.
Looks like Phil Harrison’s time at Infogrames has started with a bang. The company has offered to buyout Atari’s stock for $1.68 a share.
Keep in mind, Infogrames is already the majority stockholder in Atari, essentially controlling the company. This offer is to buy all remaining stock to fully own the company. Atari is set to hold a meeting of the board to discuss the takeover and see how they feel.
I say let it happen. Atari is in the crapper right now, and being controlled by Infogrames can only help. I just hope they don’t kill the Atari brand, as many of us have very fond memories growing up their systems and games.
Remember those rumors that Phil Harrison was leaving Sony to take the reigns at Atari? Well, they were sort-of right. The truth is that Phil will be taking over Infogrames, the parent company of Atari. Can he bring them back from the edge of extinction? Here’s what the man himself had to say:
This is the perfect time to join Infogrames and help shape the future of Atari – one of the industry’s legendary brands. As the game business moves rapidly online I believe we have an outstanding opportunity to create amazing network game and community experiences for players the world over. I am especially excited to be working on this challenge together with David, one of the most respected leaders and successful executives in our industry.
We’ll see what happens over the next year or so as Phil expands the Infogrames lineup. Wishing him and the company the best in their new endeavors.
There was a time in the early 80’s where there were very little rules and guidelines for developing and manufacturing video games. I would not recommend watching this one at work.
If you’ve ever wanted to make your own Atari 2600 game logos, you now have the chance. You get to pick your own image, font color, and the type of Atari controller the game uses.
I fooled around a bit and made our own Loot Ninja game cartridge. See what you, our loyal readers, can come up with.
