NESynth: 8-Bit Greatness

NESynth Logo Screen

We’ve all sat there playing the classic Nintendo system and wanted to desperately mash up, modify, and create our own great 8-bit tunes coming out of the TV speakers.  Well, with the help of NESynth (an iPod touch/iPhone app) you will be able to do just that, create your own classic Nintendo-like music themes.

At first glance of the application, you see that the interface is just a very simple keyboard, with a few virtual knobs above that to change octave, waveform, and sound effect.  When you eventually dive deeper into the app, you’ll see just how versatile this little bad boy is.  Add in another keyboard on top of that, and you create awesome 8-bit power chords that make Eddie Van Halen run off into the sunset and give his game away for free.

Payback for the iPhone Price Cut

payback1

Have you been on the fence about whether or not to get the GTA-style Payback for the iPhone?  Now is your chance to finally give it a try.

The developer, Apex Designs, has reduced the price from $6.99 to $4.99.  They have informed us this is an experiment since they are new to the App Store so we can’t confirm how long the price reduction will last.

To add to the good news, the developer has submitted an update to the App Store and should be going live any day now.  The list of updates includes:

  • Much improved minimap
  • Easy way to restart missions
  • Built-in instructions
  • Optional new camera angle
  • Support for different device orientations for more comfortable use on the iPod touch
  • Bug fixes
  • Lots of other tweaks

Unlike most developers, Apex Designs didn’t create a lite version of the game. At this time there is no way to try Payback free of charge.  It’s all or nothing folks.

Puzzle Quest Chapter 2 will be a Free Update

puzzlequest1

We did a review of Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords a while back and if you read that review you can understand our excitement for the next chapter.

Puzzle Quest for the iPhone has been through a lot, most players were upset with how poorly the port was done because the graphics were blurry and the text was illegible.  The developer, Transgaming, had done a series of updates over the past two months that pretty much fixed every known issue.

Transgaming must have felt that fans of Puzzle Quest have been through enough because those who purchased chapter 1 will receive chapter 2 as a free update.  Instead of paying $20.00 for the original game you are now only paying $10.00.  How great is that?

The update should be available sometime in the next two weeks.  A free version of Puzzle Quest is also ready to hit the App Store sometime this week so you can get a taste of this overly addictive puzzle game.

Chapter 3, which is actually an expansion to the original game, is yet to be officially priced.  It will be interesting to see how they incorporate the final chapter into this new pricing model.

Prey Coming to the iPhone

prey

IGN was able to get a hands on preview of the upcoming first first-person shooter Prey.  This is the same Prey that took an eternity to finally release on the Xbox 360 and PC.

There hasn’t been an actual first-person shooter available for the iPhone yet.  All of the attempts so far have been basic tech demos and just flat out failed ideas.

The control scheme is the most difficult part of porting a first-person shooter to the iPhone.  We already know the iPhone has the graphical power, it just has been difficult implementing a comfortable control system.  The developer, MachineWorks Northwest, feels that they have finally figured it out.

The game will have customizable controls to suit any players needs.  There will be a total of four sliders, located on the sides and bottom of the screen that will allow players to control the character just like a regular console controller.  Attack buttons will be located near the sliders.

Prey has no official release date but they hope it will be finished within the next few weeks.  Keep your eyes peeled for this one, it could be the first decent shooter available for the iPhone.

Astraware has a Sale and a New iPhone Game

Everyone enjoys a new game and a sale every once in a while.  That’s why we are happy to tell you that Astraware has just released a brand new word game titled Bubble Shuffle.  The game’s setting takes place under the sea and the player is given a set of bubble letters that must be created into words.  The game becomes progressively more difficult, requiring you to create at least one word from the all of the letters.  Bubble Shuffle is available for the iPhone/iPod touch, Palm OS and Windows Mobile devices.

Astraware also has a big sale taking place on a few of their premium titles including the recently announced Hellfire.  You can follow this link to see all of the games offered by Astraware, the ones on sale are marked with a huge sale banner.  Enjoy!

Rolando Lite and Additional Content in 2009

rolando

Rolando is a critically acclaimed puzzle-platformer designed from the ground up for the iPhone/iPod touch.  It has a simple LocoRocoesque art style and fantastic controls so it’s no wonder Ngmoco wants to keep this little ball rolling.

According to an interview with Pocket Gamer, Ngmoco is working on something new for Rolando.

“I can’t say too much about this now, but you’ll see some more activity on the Rolando front in 2009, and I’ve got a couple of new game ideas bubbling away at concept stage right now. I look forward to sharing them with you later on in the year!”

The game initially launched at the App Store for $9.99 but has since dropped in price to $5.99.  Ngmoco also intends to make a lite version of the game in the near future.  Keep your eyes peeled.

Hellfire Gameplay Video for the iPhone/iPod Touch

Hellfire was created by the developers of another hit App Store game titled GTS World Racing. Hellfire puts you in control of two different military helicopters as you take part in 16 different missions across the globe.

Take a look at the video below to see if this title can meet your stringent standards.  Our first impressions of the accelerometer and touch based controls were fairly positive.  All I want to know is what is up with the green fingernails?  Hellfire is now available at the App Store for $4.99.

THQ’s First Original IP for iPhone/iPod Touch

Chop Sushi is THQ’s first foray into original mobile games.  Not to say that Chop Sushi is THQ’s first mobile game or that it was made specifically for the iPhone/iPod touch, it’s just not a port or a remake of an already established franchise.

Chop Sushi is categorized as the usual match-three style game but at least the animation looks adorable.  We haven’t had a chance to try this one out quite yet but we have included a video so you may decide for yourself.  The only concern I have is that the game is also available for mobile phones which could mean a lack of graphical polish.  An official press release is included after the jump.  Chop Sushi is available now at the App Store for $2.99.

Zombie Chav Hunt Now Available for the iPhone/iPod Touch

From the developers of Low Grav Racer and Numba comes the type of game that never fails to grasp our attention.  Zombie Chav Hunt is a zombie hunting first-person shooter that pits our hero, Nev Perry, against an entire planet of living dead.

The game is available today at the low price of $0.99 at the App Store.  This is parts of Cobramobile’s new smaller and cheaper “snack games” for the iPhone/iPod touch.

Even more screenshots are available after the jump and stay tuned for a full review of Zombie Chav Hunt sometime in the near future.
