Bungie Confirms New Halo 3 Achievements

We saw some screen pics from PAX showing new achievements for Halo 3 and Bungie has been tight lipped ever since. Until now. In their weekly update, they confirm that a title update coming later this month will add 10 achievements for an additional 250 Gamerscore points. You can see them all after the jump.

However, the achievements they list aren’t all the ones we saw at PAX, and Bungie confirmed that more are coming, but who knows when. No word yet on when the new Assembly map will be released or what the whole Mythic stuff is all about. Only time will tell, since Bungie keeps everything close to their vest.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Achievements Revealed

Ninja Gaiden 2 Screen 2

Ninja Gaiden 2 shipped to retailers yesterday and we got a chance to see what you’ll be spending hours to do to boost your gamerscore. Most of them seem straightforward, which is a surprise.

There are a few that I just don’t understand, such as the ones to complete the game using only one weapon. Just why? The game is hard enough, why would you want to limit yourself to only using one weapon the entire time? Couple that with the fact that each of eight weapon-specific achievements are 5 points each, and I have a feeling not too many people will be getting 1000 gamerscore. Not unless you’re insanely hardcore and want to play the game at least 8 times all the way through.

PS3 to One Up Achievements

PS3 Home Beta Logo

According to Sony, they’re working on an achievement system that will “go well beyond a single score.” Eric Lempel, PlayStation Network director of operations, let the cat out of the bag in an interview with Next-Gen.

I know that an achievement system is very important to our consumers. With Home, and in addition to Home, we have some very exciting programs planned to recognize our consumers gaming skills and loyalty in new ways that go well beyond a single score.

We all knew about how Home will integrate a Trophy Room, which will allow users to show off trophies they earn in games. But now we’re talking outside of Home as well? Could be pretty cool. Does this mean we’ll be seeing PS3 GamerCards online sometime soon? Only time will tell. Maybe we’ll learn more at GDC.

Editorial: How Achievements Have Taken the Fun Out of Games

Achievement Unlocked Image

Achievements have been all the rage since the launch of the Xbox 360. But just how much have they done for gaming? Many people will argue that they add a level of depth to the games that give you the urge to keep playing when you normally would stop. I can’t argue with that. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. What I’ll add, though, is that achievements can take the fun out of a game.

There are a lot of times when gamers will spend hours just trying to get some achievement points that really don’t mean anything. It’s driven people to play games they don’t want to play (ie. King Kong, College Hoops 2K6) just to boost their gamer score. A lot of times, you’re just not having as much fun. In the Tiger Woods series, there has always been achievements for competing in Daily Online Tournaments. Now, most people would normally skip this feature, which doesn’t provide a lot of depth. Many players are grinding their way through just to get those extra points.

I’m not saying achievements are bad. I think they’re a great addition to gaming. But the way some developers have positioned the achievements in their games brings out sides of gamers that we’d rather not see. Cheating and boosting just to get some points online, and playing through games and modes that otherwise you had no desire to touch just to increase your score. If developers can put more effort into setting up their achievements, I think the system would be much better than where it is today.
