Rock Band Mics Available, Hint at Wii Version

Wii Rock Band

An astute gamer over at the ScoreHero forums found an official Rock Band mic at retail the other day. It ran him $50, which seems a bit steep just for the mic. Anyway, thats not the big news here. What’s really big is that the packaging says it’s works for PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360. Come again?

EA and Harmonix have been very hush about a possible Wii version. Does the standalone mic hitting retail early spill the beans on the secret project? I’m pretty sure a Wii version would sell like hot cakes. I’m just worried about DLC on the console, as the built in memory won’t hold more than a couple songs, and currently Nintendo hasn’t made it possible to access saved content from an SD card during play.

We’ll keep you posted as things progress.

So you think video games are a fad, well there are 17.9 billion reasons to prove you wrong

Money
Many believe that video games are nothing more than a waste of time or a brooding infestation on a young person’s mind. Many even claim that video games will eventually fade into the distance when the next phase of entertainment to hit, but the recent NPD numbers scream that video games and the entire industry demand respect. The video game industry has grown into a 17.9 billion dollar industry surpassing what anyone thought could be accomplished.

US sales of video game consoles, software and accessories rose “an astounding” 43 percent, with each category reaching a new “personal best,” NPD reported.

A 43% increase is something that is unheard of, that means it almost doubled in the last year. The rate at which the video game industry is growing and the reach and respect, which it is commanding now is impressive. Video games have hit hte mainstream via TV, movies, commercials, etc. Games like Halo 3 are even used to help boost the sales of other products simply by putting a picture of Master Chief on them.

Even if you don’t care that Nintendo is winning the console war, you have to respect that 18 billion dollars were spent in video games, who cares on what system.

Thanks goes to Mia for the tip.

Frazier predicts that the video game industry will continue to flourish in the United States this year, but not at the stellar rate of growth seen in 2007.

“I expect to see 2008 increase over 2007, with more growth, proportionately, coming from software sales,” Frazier said, adding that the competing consoles feature online game services that make money from subscriptions and downloads.

Guitar Hero III Wireless Guitars Rocking Solo in 2008

Guitar Hero III Screen

If you picked up Guitar Hero III for any system other than Xbox 360, you’re SOL right now if you want to play offline co-op. To get a second guitar, you have to pick up another copy of the game. For the Xbox 360, you can rock out with the wired guitars from Guitar Hero II if you have one around. But have no fear, as Activision announced today that they’ll be making the wireless guitars available as stand-alone products in early 2008.

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock lets fans thrash and burn with new wireless guitar controllers available for each platform, including exclusive Gibson Guitar’s Les Paul model for the Xbox 360TM video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, WiiTM home video game system from Nintendo, and PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system. PlayStation®2 gamers will also get to shred on an exclusive shape, Gibson’s Kramer guitar, popularized by hard rockers and known for its body design, pickups, electronics and construction for furious finger fretting.

Stick with online co-op play for now if you must. It’s too bad you can’t do the co-op Career online.

Take Two sells off Joytech

TTLooks like Take Two has decided to divest itself from the video game acessories business by selling of it’s subsidiary Joytech to the evil empire of accessories - Mad Catz. So looks like Mad Catz will strengthen their accessory monopoly while Take Two will focus more on games, which I think is good. Take Two needs to go make more Bioshock’s and not worry about controllers, go and be quick about it.

From the press release:

New York, NY - September 7, 2007 - Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTWO) today announced that it has sold substantially all of the assets of its wholly owned Joytech video game accessories subsidiary to Mad Catz Interactive, Inc. (AMEX/TSX: MCZ). The Joytech sale reflects Take-Two’s previously announced plans to divest its non-core businesses.

Xbox 360 Halo Accessories, Messenger Kit Coming Next Week

Halo ControllerIn case you couldn’t get enough Halo in your life, Microsoft will be rolling out the Halo 3 themed accessories this week, namely two wireless controllers and a wireless headset.

The biggest thing, for me at least, is an exclusive Todd McFarlane limited edition Master Chief figure that is packed with every Halo 3 controller. I have no desire to own the controller, but I’m a sucker for gaming figures for my desk.

Also of note, the Messenger Kit will make it’s debut this week after much hoopla in the Spring Dashboard Update. I’m really not feeling this one, but who knows, it might become a sleeper hit.

Darklite Lightbar and DVD Remote for PS3

Darklight DVD Remote 1

Messiah Entertainment is dropping two new accessories for the PS3 in September. Their Darklite line of products will feature a DVD Remote and a Lightbar.

Darklite™ DVD Remote is an ion-lithium powered DVD/Blu-Ray™ media remote for the PS3 featuring bright backlit buttons for visibility in the dark.

[...]

Darklite™ Integrated Lightbar is a vivid lighting product for the PS3 that creates a unique atmosphere in the room while playing games or watching movies.

I honestly see no point in either of these accessories. The standard DVD remote from Sony is terrific, and do you really need neon on the back of your PS3? Both products will retail for $30 each, so there’s something for you to save your money on.

Xbox 360 Gets “Hot” New Accessories

Mean Fire GuyMicrosoft might want to tone this one down. They’re calling the newly announced accessories “hot”, which they’re saying are the Halo 3 Limited Edition Xbox 360 (how this is an accessory I’ll never know), the Messenger text input device, and wireless controllers hot pink and neon blue.

Ok, the Messenger is somewhat cool. I’m going to discount the Halo 3 LE 360, as calling it an accessory makes as much sense as calling Gene Simmons a virgin. Besides, it’s pretty useless unless you don’t already have a 360. The last ones, colored controllers, are far from “hot”. Come on, why do I need neon pink and blue controllers? I think Microsoft should change the title here from “hot” to “steaming piles of crap”.

I think they should have busted out this “hot” term last year when they announced the wireless headset and wireless racing wheel. Those are a lot cooler than colored controllers.

Microsoft Drops Price on Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel

Xbox 360 Wireless Racing WheelThe Xbox 360’s Wireless Racing Wheel was severely overpriced. At $159.99, not many people were swarming into stores to grab one. Seeing this, Microsoft wisely slashed a few clams off the price, making it a svelte $129.99. Not a huge drop, but any price drop will be good.

The price drop is in line with the release of Forza 2, which Microsoft hopes will spark the sales of the racing wheel.

Personally, I’ve spent way too much on accessories for the Xbox 360 and don’t have any plans to drop another $130 on a racing wheel.
