Review: Beneath a Steel Sky (iPhone/iPod Touch)

Classic point and click adventure games are back. Spearheading the effort is the original Beneath a Steel Sky, an oldie leading the new charge. Simple controls, story driven, and entertaining. The game delivered it all back in the day but does it hold up on the iPhone and iPod Touch? Read on to find out.

Interplay Confirms Project V13… Again?

Interplay dropped a press release last week announcing they have finalized their agreement with Masthead Studios, which is extremely similar to their previous announcement we covered here. Except this time it has been upgraded from a “binding letter of intent” to “signed definitive agreements”. Does this mean it’s a Fallout MMO? Nope, because Interplay and Bethesda are still fully engaged in their slap fight over the Fallout rights. Really it means nothing except maybe Interplay now finally has the funding they were required to have last year in order to retain the Fallout MMO rights. That’s a big MAYBE.

Regardless I don’t want to hear Interplay or Bethesda fanboys screaming back and forth about who does what to their mothers in the basement. It was spelled out in a previous article Interplay needed $30 million in funding secured, their financials have not shown any of it. There are a few other considerations to play with but I’m thinking after the court case settles Bethesda will win and have ZeniMax Online Studios ramp up to drop a Fallout MMO in the future (distant future so keep it in your pants). The good news for Interplay fans is Project V13, Fallout or not, is expected to have a public beta in 2012.

Mass Effect 2 Torrents and Reviews Both Doing Well

On the eve of the release of Mass Effect 2, reviews are starting to pour in – and if early indications are any, uh, indication – Bioware is on track for yet another blockbuster release of sorts.

Like most triple A titles, the street date has been broken and a slew of individuals pirates have gotten hold of the game early.  Just checking a public Bittorrent tracker this morning, almost 200,000 people are trying to download the PC version of the game, and that’s just one tracker.

While it is sad to see Bioware and EA miss out on a large portion of sales due to piracy, it should be taken with a grain of salt.  Modern Warfare happened to be the most pirated game of 2009, in spite of it making boatloads of money at retail, so having a very pirated game doesn’t necessarily mean the cash won’t come pouring in.

More importantly however, is the lingering question of why the chick in the above picture can’t get a more supportive bra.  I mean, it is the future and everything.  At any rate, we’ll have our review of the game up as soon as possible.

Case of the Mondays Video – Wedding Brawls Are Awesome

Weddings are supposed to be the happiest day of a person’s life. Sometimes the chicken is too dry or sometimes the DJ plays crappy music. Nevertheless, sometimes the guests get drunk and beat the shit out of each other. I guess we can count out the Cha Cha slide after cake.

Pre-Owned Digital Trade-Ins?

Really? Is this real? Is this real life?  I seriously had trouble believing this news story to be real, but you did read that title correctly: digital trade-ins.  Games that you pay to download over the internet, can now be turned around and sold to someone else, with you getting a little piece of that action back towards the next game.  I thought this article was from The Onion Network for a second (fake satirical news), but turns out this shit just got real.

Green Man Gaming is set to roll out a new distribution service that will allow gamers to buy games and then trade them in for credit.  The London based firm is set to roll out the service sometime in the coming months (they mention a first quarter release date) with over 400 games ready to download and trade back in over and over.  Later in the year their goal is to constantly add titles to the list of downloads and have it grow to over 2,000 by the end of 2010.  Green Man Gaming also concludes that they promise to “pay significant royalties to the publisher each time the game is traded in.”

The COO of Green Man Gaming Gian Luzio had this to say:

“Previously the minute you had paid and downloaded your game it had no resale value. This is extremely expensive for the gamer and does not encourage the consumer to try new genres or franchises. Our leading edge technology gives downloaded games a value that gamers can trade-in at any time.”

How is this not a hoax people?  To really try and get peoples’ money for buying a “used” install of a game?  Last time I checked, an install is an install is an install?  They are the same over and over again.  The only way one might get messed up is if the CD-ROM is scratched corrupting an essential file, but this doesn’t even have that!

This all essentially sounds like what goes on at companies all across the world with their IT software.  The company pays a crapton of money to get unlimited licenses for software like Microsoft Works, Outlook, etc. that they need, and then issue out the software to all of the lower minions and workers who need it.  The company has the ability to install the programs as an image on as many computers as possible.  Only with Green Man Gaming, they are buying the licenses and getting their money back (and a shit-ton more).  My guess is that  everyone can’t be GameStop, but they can sure try to be with these digital trad-in downloads.  I really see this company trying to be the ant (Green Man Gaming) that jumps on the gorilla’s back (GameStop) in order to get some used game revenue.

What do you think about this Loot Ninja gamers? Is this worthwhile? Would you use something like this?

The First 9 Minutes of Heavy Rain Cost Me Money

I’ve been very interested in Heavy Rain for a while now. After seeing a lot more interactive parts of the game in this month’s Qore, I really want the game. But now after seeing the full first 9 minutes of gameplay, I went out and dropped cash to preorder the game. From everything I’ve seen, it’s going to be extremely engaging in a way we don’t often see in gaming. I’m all in.

Level 31 In Fallout 3

Upon receiving my Xbox 360 from repair, I decided that it wouldn’t be a bad idea to finally finish up Mothership Zeta. While facing the final ‘boss’, I noticed a little notification telling me that I had leveled up to 31. I was surprised to level up so I did some searching around and the level cap is still 30. I guess Fallout was feeling generous that day :) .

Has anyone else run into / heard about this?
