Review: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Modern Warfare 2 Trailer Screen Capture

As you all know by now, the year’s most anticipated FPS title has finally dropped, and we’ve all been living, sleeping, eating, and breathing Modern Warfare 2 for 6 days now. I decided to hack my way through the campaign before I touched the multiplayer, and managed to hack my way through on Veteran Difficulty in just under 9 hours, yielding me roughly 600 points worth of achievements. Now, I make no bones about being a huge fan of the COD series, but this campaign was awesome. I know a lot of you buy the COD games only for the multiplayer aspect, but with this iteration in the series, you are only ripping yourself off. Why? Hit the jump and find out.

Impressions: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Screen

Well, the wait is over, and MW2 has finally fallen into our grubby little ninja hands. And let me start off by saying, this game is totally living up to all the hype. First, the story is enthralling, and extremely well-written. Other articles I’ve read, and people I’ve heard talking, have said they thought it was too far-fetched, and unrealistic. I disagree completely. I think the story flows very well, and is entirely plausible from a “possible-end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it” viewpoint. It’s not any more far-fetched than the standard season of the 24 TV series. The story and character development both carry on perfectly from the last iteration of the Modern Warfare series, and also introduces a few new characters as well.

Review: Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier

jakanddaxter

The 6th, and latest offering in the Jak and Daxter series. Even though it’s the 6th game in the series, this game’s events carry-on the story from the ending of Jak 3. The world is running out of Eco, so Jak, Daxter, and Keira must go to the Brink to find some more. In their quest, they discover a mysterious orb that points to all Eco sources. This orb is then lost in a scuffle with Sky Pirates. Along the way they must first fend off, then later, team up with said Sky Pirates to recover the orb, and discover a new Eco source to save the now unstable planet. This installment allows for all the usual Eco powers, Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, and the unstable and mysterious Dark Eco. There is no Dark/Light Jak in this game, due to the unstable source of the Eco that is used.

The annual holiday barrage of sales staff

ninja_santa

Okay guys, I know I’m not alone on this one. The time of year is quickly approaching where you will find great bargains, sales, and clearances on your favorite products, including video games, and electronics. I love the Holiday season as much as the next guy. Thanksgiving Turkey, Santa Claus in all the Malls, Figgy Pudding, and all that other crap. However, this is also the time of year, when most stores double, and some even triple their sales staff, to heckle, pester, and bug you into uneccessary purchases.

Modern Warfare 2 Loses Dedicated Servers for PC Multiplayer

Modern Warfare 2 Trailer Screen Capture

Well, it appears the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 will no longer be the beneficiary of dedicated servers.

A EuroGamer story states that developer Infinity Ward will roll out a new proprietary service, called IWNet, which will focus on matchmaking. More after the jump.

Cross-Game chat on the horizon for PS3?

PS3 Slim

That’s right. The most requested feature by Playstation 3 owners, the addition of cross-game chat, could be coming as early as the next firmware update. While cross-game chat has been available for a long time on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 owners have had to do without this feature.

EA to release Arcade version of Madden NFL

EA Logo

EA will release a simpler version of the popular football game called ”Madden NFL Arcade”, which features “pick-up and play” 5-on-5 games.

The game appears to be more casual compared to its more realistic, and complex siblings. Players get four downs to march 60 yards and score a touchdown.  The first team to 30 wins. Players can also use “Game Changers,” special power-ups to give players the upper hand, such as freezing an opponent’s receiver or turning off their passing icons.

Madden NFL Arcade will sport visuals similar to what EA used for the Nintendo Wii release of Madden NFL 10, and will sell as a download on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network for $15 this December.

The release of Madden NFL Arcade is also going to try and address one of the sports genre’s biggest issues: As controls for sports simulations bet more and more complicated, it gets harder and harder for newer players to catch on.

Review: Beaterator

beaterator-psp-cover

When trying to think of a way to review this game, I was suddenly struck by a brilliant idea – ask Matt for advice. Now, some people may tell you that was a poor decision, but I did it anyways. And lo and behold, Matt was right. I couldn’t review Beaterator as a game, per-se. Because, well, it just isn’t a game at all. But I’ll get to that in a second. First off, I want you to know that I have several years of experience as a musician, and with mixing live sound. I have used (analog) mixing boards from 8 – 32+8 channels, and have run PA systems in Auditoriums with seating for 100, all the way up to seating for 800 people. So there, I’m (sort of) qualified to review this “game” as what it really is – a very solid, easy to use, 8 channel beat mixer/pocket studio, all rolled into a nice convenient package. That package, of course, being your handy dandy PlayStation Portable.
