EE 2009: BRINK Developer Session

brink

BRINK Game Director Paul Wedgewood from Splash Damage took some time out of his busy schedule to put on a developer session every day of Eurogamer Expo this year. I caught the final session on Saturday. What was on display was pretty awesome.

BRINK is about the last known bastion of civilization in 2045 known as the Ark. Originally built as an experimental habitat shit has happened that has made it a permanent habitat for the past 20 years. In that time the original citizens survived and reproduced and taken on refugees, growing the population beyond the intent of the Ark. Refugees have taken up homes in Container City, a place previously reserved only for storage. The imbalances of society have caused some to rise up, placing the Ark on the BRINK of civil war. There are two sides to this war (as is normally the case), refugees and the police. The refugees see themselves as rebels, fighting for equality. The security force are just doing their jobs, viewing the troublesome refugees as borderline terrorists.

Sam Fisher Sneaks into Eurogamer Expo

splinter cell conviction screen1

This past weekend at the last day of the Eurogamer Expo Ubisoft decided to give gamers a little love. We got a quick demo of Splinter Cell: Conviction at maximum volume. It was the first look since the walkthrough at E3 and it drew a big crowd.

While it was the same scene from E3 on show the Ubisoft team decided to do things slightly differently than was displayed at the E3 preview. Instead of sneaking Sam around all those civilians he pulled out a gun and sent all the innocents scrambling for cover. The screams and cries peaked the curiosity of the guards at the gate who went to investigate, allowing Fisher to scale the wall. A half cry in alarm and a few headshots later Fisher is breaking through a window and taking on a few more baddies. This walkthrough presented a little more of a directly combative Sam Fisher than the stealthy Sam we saw in the E3 demo, allowing the game to show it offers a little more freedom in gameplay styles this go around.

EE 2009: Heavy Rain Developer Session

heavy rain shelby load

While at the Eurogamer Expo this past weekend I sat in on the Quantic Dream developer session lead by David Cage, writer and director of Heavy Rain. I have already stated that I have huge expectations (and love) for Heavy Rain in my demo impressions, but here I will dive in a little more to what we were shown in the session and some of the interesting bits shared by Cage.

If it didn’t pick it up in the impressions I wrote this game is asking one key question. How far are you prepared to go to save someone you love? As Cage stated,

It’s set on the East Coast of the US and it’s the story of four characters who’s lives are interlaced around the investigation of a serial killer called the Origami Killer… All four characters will be presented with this question, “How far are you prepared to go to save someone you love?”

Impressions: Heavy Rain

Heavy Rain Presentation

Heavy Rain. “An ambitious project” is the label that many have applied to this title. Many others have asked “what the hell is this about?”. I was one of the latter, not understanding the big deal, until I saw it this past weekend at the Eurogamer Expo in London.  Wow is all I have to say. At first I walked by it as people played the demo, it looked amazing graphically and many people were glued to their screens, with many more equal entranced looking on over the players shoulder. Then I went to the Quantic Dream developer presentation lead by David Cage, which sent me from interested into wanting intensely.  Finally, I got my hands on it.  You ready for me to tell you about it? Eurogamer Expo 2009

eurogamer hall

From the 28th to the 31st of October Eurogamer put on their second Eurogamer Expo in Leeds and London.  The first 2 days were in Leeds and the final 2 days were in London as part of the London Games Festival, which I was able to attend. The Eurogamer Expo is a nice little gathering of publishers and developers displaying their wares to the wonderful gamers in attendance. It is definitely a public oriented affair, designed at giving the maximum exposure to the consumer.

The setting is nothing too extravagant just rows of PC’s and console/TV setups for gamers to play in Old Billingsgate, the former fish market. Nice and clean, not overcrowded and a decent line-up of presentations help keep lines to a minimum as I didn’t wait more than 15 minutes to play any game. Spread out over the entire building, only the cafe and career center were overcrowded (and the Assassin’s Creed II demo, very upset about not getting hand’s on there.  Hook a brother up Ubisoft!) Little bits of swag were passed around here and there, but primarily the Expo is just an event to get hands on experience with the newest and upcoming titles. The presentations are nice insights into the developers mind if you are looking for that sort of thing. If you just want to game, there is plenty of that too. No Ordinary Mission

Eidos dropped us a line with the new Just Cause 2 trailer “No Ordinary Mission”. Nothings more fun than maxing out explosions, parachutes, grappling hooks, and Latino accents. It’s like being the Ricky Iglesias of insurgents. Enjoy.

A Learning Experience

banner_scribblenauts

I’ve recently picked up a copy of Scribblenauts for the DS, needless to say, it’s awesome! Although I’ve managed to make it freeze and the controls need a little bit of work, check out the review by Matt for the full details because this isn’t to talk about the review. This is because Scribblenauts made me think: education and gaming have a turbulent relationship. Rarely does anyone do a great job at making learning even slightly entertaining. Sometimes it’s so bad you can’t even mock the educational attempt. Learning games typically only teach you that most learning games suck. The last great education game to stay with me is Oregon Trail. Since then nothing else has stuck with me, until now of course.

Fallout MMO Concept Art

A while ago we reported on the trouble faced by Interplay and their attempts to retain the rights for the Fallout MMO, speculated to be codenamed Project V13. Well a lot has happened since then, most behind closed doors. Short story is Bethesda sued Interplay to stop work on the Fallout MMO. Interplay then countersued Bethesda and a slap fight has commenced. Court ensues, more details later.

Why do you care? Because of the lawsuit all sorts of juicy details are being released, like concept art from Interplay themselves. Here is a little taste with more beyond the jump.

The Lack of Prestige in Winning

ps3 trophy

It’s the question I’ve been asking myself for a while now… Has the Game of the Year award become as worthless as the Nobel Peace Prize? It is a bold question, but one that is worth exploring.

If you have been living in a cave or just don’t run with circles of people that discuss these things here it is for you. President Barack Hussein Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize. If you catch the video on YouTube you can hear the shock and awe reactions from the Nobel Press at 0:18. These are some serious reporters you hear shitting themselves. If you listen to the Nobel Committee spokesperson (and understand Norwegian) he states Obama wins because of his efforts to curb nuclear proliferation. If that’s the case where is the prize for Hideo Kojima and his work on the Metal Gear series? By the time the Nobel nominations had closed Kojima had accomplished more in this area than Obama.

Civilization Advances to Facebook

CivNet

A few days ago Sid Meier, the man much revered and cursed for creating the uber-amazing 4X series Civilization, announced the coming of Civilization Network to Facebook. Farmville eat your heart out. A step up from Civilization Revolution (which only left my DS for Scribblenauts) CivNet looks to grow solo, co-op, and competitive play in a persistent online Civ world.

If you never found a reason to join Facebook, this is it. I expect this to be a total time and life suck. I hope it works on Facebook Mobile. You have until 2010 to get your life in order for this one. In the meantime you can join the official page at http://www.facebook.com/civnetwork
