Is that 360 repair center phone number evading you?

My friend puma81 decided he had had enough. He was tired of the countless phone calls, the lies from support that a supervisor would call him back, and worst of all, the thought that the defective wireless headset he had sent in over a week ago was going mia.

He did some searching and came up with this:

Jabil Circuit Inc
5700 South International Parkway
McAllen, Texas, 78503-8931
Phone: 956-683-0698

Whats THIS?! A PHONE NUMBER!? Yes, that’s right, and FREE OF CHARGE!. Puma was able to find that elusive phone number for the McAllen service center. He told me a guy named “Girdy” answered the line, and so he asked for door #18 (microsofts section of the warehouse), and was promptly transferred. The next voice he heard was that of a microsoft employee…

“Microsoft” the guy answered… Puma then told him about how he had paid out of pocket to ship in his defective headset, and how he was getting the typical run around from the lame and useless outsourced tech support line.

Puma was then informed that there are new headsets, a new hardware revision that is coming soon, and they were holding off on shipping out a replacement for him until that revision was in stock. Whether or not they have been shipping out these new revisions, or whether or not they actually fix the COUNTLESS problems with the headsets remains to be seen… but at least everyone now has a good starting point if they are getting nowhere fast with 360 tech support.

Microsoft Updates 360 Dash Again, Tells Nobody What It Is [Update]

So today I woke up early and wanted to see if the Gears of War patch was out, but was greeted with an auto update for the dash when I signed into live. I didn’t update because the last time I did, it killed my system slowly over the following week.

There are a few threads on the xbox.com forums speculating what might have been included in the update, but as of 11 a.m. there is still nothing solid.

I will try to post back when I have more information.

UPDATE:: http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2007/01/09/today-s-dash-update.aspx

Major Nelson posted about the dash update with enough information to satisfy a 2 year old. When will ms start giving us some info when they fix or break something? Oh, and by the way, NEVER use 1up for your xbox 360 news. They really screwed the pooch on the news of the udpate.

Personally, I think the update did something to fix either vga issues, or something video related as well as possibly fixing whatever clusterfuck they started with the nov 30th update (gpu clock? anyone?). I noticed right away after updating that now my background doesn’t cover as much as the screen as it did. I’d love to find out more.

UPDATE (from drunk pandas): They didn’t fix VGA. Mine still sucks donkey balls.

Jmel’s thoughts on the Microsoft CES keynote

So, I also watched they keynote last night. Looking back on it now, I feel it was a huge waste of an hour or so. I was expecting microsoft to really bring out something interesting. Xbox 360 related or not, I was just hoping for something. I think the IPTV thing was the most interesting part of the keynote, but even thinking back on that, I don’t see how this will provide anything that you’d really want to see over watching cable or satellite as it is now. On top of it, I’m pretty sure that because it’s microsoft we’re talking about, none of the content is going to be free.

We saw no hdmi or hard drive announcements. The only halfway interesting thing game related was the cross platform gaming, with uno. Although at first, this was kinda a cool demo, after thinking about it, it’s not really that amazing. Microsoft is most likely going to try to force pc gamers to start paying for live, across as many games as possible. Uno and Halo2 are supposed to be the first cross live titles, but I heard that Halo2 is actually not going to be cross platform multiplayer, only cross platform in the sense you can message each other via the 360 or pc. This is kinda stupid, but the alternative would surely mean that console users would be slaughtered.

It’s not all doom and gloom for microsoft, but Sony even announced higher sales during their launch than Microsoft had during theirs a year ago. Personally, I think this is mainly because of people buying the systems only to resell them, but it’s definately something that needs to perk microsofts ears up.

It made me think of a funny way to look at what Microsoft says about the number of consoles shipped. With the constant back and forth motion of refurbs being sent in and then arriving doa to users nationwide (possibly worldwide) it makes me wonder how many consoles are actually out there.

The only other part of the keynote I felt was worth commenting on was the whole “house of the future” crap. Bill Gates demoed a kitchen where rfid works in tandem with a projection or otehr type display to show you recipes and other stuff thats kitchen related. We saw this all a few years ago, and why it’s in the keynote I have no idea. Then we saw this bedroom with lcd panels on the wall showing weird random pictures and a webcam view in a picture frame. I just can’t shake the feeling that MS really has nothing new or interesting to show this CES, it’s kinda like they are unprepared or something.

I hope the next few days show us something better here.

Guess I’m not crazy… headset issues part 2

http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2006/12/11/wireless-headset-issues.aspx

I won’t rant on about it. I tried to make some comments in his blog entry, but they haven’t shown in over an hour.

What else can I say but what I have been saying…

  •  Call center sucks, they make probably more than some gamers calling and know less about the products the gamers are calling about
  • QA at MS sucks lately, the gamer is expected to do all the testing
  • The prevailing opinion of the call center is that all new products (not technology) are going to have issues, so you should expect problems, not expect working products
  • It takes way too long for MS to acknowledge hardware and software issues, and I think this is mainly because they have no communications channel for advanced users to link up to high level support

I took my headset back a few weeks ago. Screw it, and shame on MS for giving the users the mushroom treatment once again.

I’m still having to get my launch 360 repaired that lasted exactly 1 year, all because of the nov. 30th update that they claim (the call center) had nothing to do with it dying. I guess the hundreds of people on the forums are just crazy.

Here are the comments I’ve made:

This is the patch that never ends, yes it goes on and on my friends…

Never thought I’d see the day. Well, maybe I thought I’d see it but that it wouldn’t be affecting me.

Apparently, this latest fall update patch for the patch patch, firmware update patch, is causing some problems. I have a 360 that was manufactured on the 22nd of October in 2005, and never had any overheating issues, NOTHING until just these last few days when I sat down to play a bit of viva pinata to show the wife.

On saturday I managed to play for 4 hours, with only a few hitches here and there, and since I saw people having the occasional lockup on the forums, I figured perhaps that was just normal for the game, I mean, games are buggy as hell these days, and theres always some patch out for this issue, or that untested bug or whatever.

Well, I turned the system off for about 30 mins, and then powered on again to show the wife some stuff I read, and bam, it hits me, over and over like a machine gun filled with forks. Lockup after lockup every 30 seconds to two minutes. It’s like a barrage of suck and it won’t stop. I figured maybe it was the dog running around causing these minute 360 shattering vibrations in the floor, I had no idea.

Then today I get to do some testing as I was too frustrated last night to think straight. I open the entire 360 up and load up viva again. Now, it’s been a cool 50 to 60 degrees in the great room since the night before, and the 360 has been off, so it’s cool to the touch. Load up, bam, lock. Load again, bam lock. I feel the heatsink. Warm to the touch, not hot.

WTF!

Now I’m getting a bit pissed, so I try small arms…lock…I try gears of war…lock. I try without hard drive…lock. I try every possible thing I can think of, and still the same results. Finally I start thinking about what the patch did, and perhaps its something with a video driver or scaler or something and so I set the dash to 480p. I play 3 rounds of small arms without a lock. I played gears of war for 10  mins with no problems. I played viva for about 15 and then got a lock again. Well, if that ain’t curious, I don’t know what is. Viva I think has it’s issues, but if setting the dash to 480p might help some of this freezing until ms can figure out what the hell they broke this time with their patch for the patch, then I guess I’ll have to keep it this way.

I thought ms was supposed to make gaming more fun, and now we are getting their windows update treatment where every new patch brings new problems. This is getting rediculous beyond words.

A few xbox.com threads for your enjoyment:

EDIT- Just an update, I tried closing the 360 back up, and it seems to lock up just as fast in the viva pinata menus… I tried even doing 480i, and some games I get a bit further in, but it’s crazy. If ms doesn’t fix this this week, I dunno if I am going to hold on to my 360. It’s getting that bad to me. It would be one thing if these updates were optional, but to have poorly tested updates be mandatory, they are killing themselves.

Xbox 360 Wireless Headset NIGHTMARES

I should have known… I mean I read that it was going to be an uphill battle if I bought one… But did I listen? OF COURSE NOT!!! :) Reason being, that ms has done a decent job of coming around full circle to support its products. I picked one up on saturday, and had my hopes up, thinking I’d not be a statistic. Silly Jmel.

So, I somehow manage to get it out of the package without severing a major blood vessel, and power up the 360. I turn the headset on and hear a “beep”…. COOL! I’m in business right? I fire up gears of war (love it….love it) and start a multiplayer session. Within minutes, beep….wtf?! I pay closer attention to what’s going on this time… as I am playing, I hear the players in the game start speaking out of the surround speakers near the tv, instead of the headset, then they come back again… BEEP! All within 30 seconds of the last beep.

WHAT THE HELL! I am thinking… Well, it appears I have the same problems as about a few hundred other people that are posting on the xbox.com forums. It seems that the headset’s internal radio is made out of dog excrement and is unable to have either the consistancy, distance, or reliability as the wireless controllers.

I recommend that anyone interested in buying a headset, either expect to have to call microsoft about a replacement, or enjoy your multiple trips to the store returning each one over and over again until you find one that works.

I have outlined my experiences with support here. I hope this helps someone avoid wasting 60 dollars on what could have been a pretty useful product that would make gaming with the headset more enjoyable.

Small Arms in a nutshell -or- “Thanks for no more old crap Microsoft”

So, I broke down and did it. I purchased my 2nd live arcade game. Yes, my second, as I’d only paid points for uno before this one, and that was just because it was cheaper than buying a deck of cards locally. I don’t usually buy many microsoft points because I’m not a fan of how any of it has been handled yet, as far as bang for the buck, and I really don’t like how you can’t just buy the points you need. I’ve amassed my points from a few places… I got 1600 points from the 360 achiever promotion with true.com, 500 points from a verizon contest that was really a failure in my opinion, and another 1600 point card from bonus credit card points.

Today though, I picked up Small Arms. It was 800 points, or 10 dollars. Overall I really like the game. I hear it is like a Nintendo game called Super Smash Brothers, but I’ve never played it, as I’m not really a big Nintendo fan. Never really have been. I was always that guy with the Sega systems growing up… The master system, the genesis, the sega cd, the game gear, the dreamcast. Oh well. Anyway, the game is like a little fighting game, where you choose (initially) one of 8 characters (of 12 total, 4 are locked) and go to battle on one of 8 levels. Your characters vary from fluffy animals to a mutant tree, to a robot. I don’t care so much about their stories as much as how they looked, and the character models were pretty impressive considering the size of the game (about 47 megs). You can ”battle” with up to 3 other players or ai players and to shoot each other till the death until the end of the match. Pretty simple, so just about anyone can pick it up pretty easily.

Each character has a different weapon, and a different subweapon, though during the match you are able to pick up other weapons as you go. I found myself using the cat guy the most because he is the first character on the list, and I was on my lunch break. Some of the levels are pretty cool, like the tornado and train levels, as the level itself scrolls past you, and you must continue hopping and moving and shooting so as not to fall off the screen.

My only 2 complaints with the game would have to be the controls and the camera. The camera isn’t really a big deal, it’s just that it zooms in and out very randomly it seems, and makes it hard to see what is going on sometimes with all the action and small characters. The controls however, is a tough nut to crack. There are 3 possible jump buttons, the a button, or the left or right bumper buttons above the triggers. Now, to fire your weapon, you must use the right trigger to fire, or left trigger for secondary weapon, and at the same time use the right thumbstick to aim. It gets really hairy when you have to actually jump aim, and shoot all at the same time. As you probably can figure out, it’s pretty damn hard to press the a button while you are moving the right thumbstick. The solution would seem to be to use the right and left bumpers but for some reason I couldn’t get used to it… I don’t often hit both bumpers at the same time, and crossing over just felt weird. Instead I found myself sacrificing the ability to jump and aim at the same time a LOT.

If you can get past these small issues (or if they aren’t issues to you), the game is a must buy in my opinion. The price is decent for the replayability on it, and as I said in my title, it’s not old crap, its a new game (though it could be argued a copy of an older game) but the graphics look great, and it’s a lot of fun to play both offline and online. I usually don’t advocate purchasing arcade games, but if Microsoft can continue to get developers making these kinda games, more people such as myself will come around.

I’ll leave everyone with this last thought however, I played a demo on the pc of that game “Heavy Weapon” and my God, that is the most boring crap I think I have ever wasted 60 seconds on. Don’t believe me? Give it a try. For the life of me, I just couldn’t get into the basic, repetitive sprites coming in wave after wave. I’ve played this game before, a million times in the 80’s and 90’s and it looked MUCH better and played MUCH better then. Arcade doesn’t have to mean lame and crappy, so why push out a game like that?

Memo to xbla team: It’s not 1984 anymore…

Oh, and while I am at it. Can you guys at the “arcade” please, PLEASE, start releasing some original ip’s? I have 3600 points sitting in an account earning you guys interest (as I am sure at least a few hundred thousand other 360 owners do) and the least you could do is actually give us a game to spend this money on that we can’t load up on the pc under the mame emulator.

I’ve seen at least 5 good games, including roboblitz that I’d buy in an instant for your crazy ms points but alas, you want to dribble out this crap like defender at a slow “1 a week” pace. You guys must realize that no one would buy this junk if it was released after the original games, so you try to milk us for it now while we are hungry and scared. It’s not working (well on me, at least)!

Give us some new games, damnit!

Now you have to WAIT to grab COMMERCIALS as a silver member?

Okay, Drunk Pandas has been wanting me to do a post for a while here, and so today, I felt the need to really let it all out about another thing that has grinded my gears. So, I check out my rss feed for majornelsons blog around 2:05 today, and am shocked to see that not only is he mentioning content that I thought had been on the nickel and diming place…I mean “marketplace”, but that this content is not going to be available to silver members for another week.

Alright, I guess this is fine, if this was like some kinda inside cool stuff for free for gold members to show appreciation… but what’s this? It’s A FUCKING COMMERCIAL! Good God, it’s not even something I’d WANT to take the time to download and waste my precious bandwidth that could be netting me kills in gears of war…no, it’s a commercial to sell 360’s and now ms wants to withold those from the very people that they’d need to watch it. It’s basically promoting xbox live, and they are going to give it to the gold members (um, who have obviously already paid for the damn service) instead of the silver members (who are getting all the content for free).

Does the left hand talk to the right hand at the xbox division? Hilarious.

Gears of War Gold Experience Party (9.28.06)

So, I was somehow lucky to be chosen for the GOW party that took place in Chapel Hill, NC.

Overall, the event was a great success in my opinion. I was going to buy the game before, but it made me have much more respect for the developers, and also made me feel welcome as a gamer by microsoft. The food was free (and there was LOTS of it), there was free beer and shots, and free tshirts with your own gamertag on the back. I just wish there were more parties like this locally as they always seem to happen in far off places, instead of NC. Thanks again to Epic Games and Microsoft for a great evening.
