I Want What Sony’s Smoking

If there are some special plants out there that I’m not aware of, Sony sure is. They’re smoking something straight out of magic land when it comes to some of the statements they make. In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal regarding a transition from the iPad to a more defined mobile gaming platform, Sony’s John Koller had this to say.

Apple’s entrance into the portable gaming space has been a net positive for Sony. When people want a deeper, richer console, they start playing on a PSP.

Yes, the PSP has seen increased sales since the iPhone launched in 2007, but they also (finally) gave it some great games, introduced better hardware and the UMD-less PSPgo. Just because the two happened to occur around the same time doesn’t mean you can correlate the events. People who buy the iPad are not going to go grab a PSP because they aren’t satisfied with the device. Just because it plays games does not make it the primary focus. While everyone is out claiming their product will succeed, I’m happy over here with my iPhone and the games and apps I can play. My PSP is collecting dust.
