Will You Pay for Premium PSN?

PlayStation Network Logo

Since it’s confirmed and I was debating this in my head this morning, I wanted to get all of your opinions on the matter. With a Premium PSN coming in 2010, will you pay for it? I fully understand that it will depends on what added benefit most people will get, but just remember that everything you have now on the PSN will continue to remain free, including online play.

Personally, I’m on the fence. I’m in the minority of vocal internet gamers who sees the value and benefit in Qore and don’t mind paying for that every year. A lot of you disagree, and I respect your opinion. I’m sure I’ll end up paying for it anyway just so I can tell you all about it, but if I wasn’t in my current position, it’s a tough call especially in this economy.

Sony has yet to firm up details on anything that will be included with the Premium PSN subscription or how much it costs, so this is all conjecture at this point. It’s still and interesting topic of debate as we move into a short Holiday week. Let us know your take in the comments and bring on the turkey!

probably not. i didnt like paying for live, since they usually messed up on my credit card billing.

sure there were prepaid subscription cards. but i paid monthly, cause $8 at a time isn’t to hard to come up with, but i rarely have $50 to throw away.

so going to gamestop every month just to buy a 1 month card seemed irritating. (on top of that i got banned from live 2 weeks at a time repeatedly cause i’d kick someone from game on far cry 2 or some things like that, and my 360 died 4 times in 1 year)

as long as they dont charge for the xgame chat they are working on im ok with them charging for stuff that caters to other people.

i shouldn’t have to pay just to have a basic feature while i game.

no actually . i only like playing with home and a bit online play .. nothing else .. unless .. there was a really good futures .

  3. Gustav

Yes, I would consider paying for premium psn if it allowed for faster online gaming, newer and better features, and to make these updates bugless.

  4. Lilday

I’ll be paying, I guess it will have some benefits. When more information is given I may change my mind but so far I think they will give us something worth paying for. I hope so anyway.

  5. Joe

I probably will because I’m an avid PS3 gamer, lets see what I get with the subscription first, but probably yes.

  6. Aaron Colas

No, I would not. Too much shit to pay, there is no need for an additional fee on top of all the crap needed to just be online.

  7. jay

I don’t think so I already pay for live and that is good enough, if its outstanding I would consider changing live for PPSN

  8. Yes

Ya if its good, i actually pay for qore (2nd annual subscription) and i think it sucks lol. But i do it cuz its only 20 bones and in hopes to get in betas, (like mag, uncharted, etc). So i know ill atleast try it, hope there is some good stuff in it. I would like to stop paying for qore and maybe pay for this new premium.

I payed for 2 ghetto box 360s subscriptions when i had those.

no way!!! i’m paying one of the advatages that made me buy the ps3 was the avility to play and have access to online features, if you ask me, sony is going the wrong way.

  10. In all honesty, it’s not even a question you should be asking right now, because we have absolutely no clue on what they are going to be offering for the subscription fee, nor do we even know what the subscription fee will be. Seems to me this is just asked to be another PS3 bashing session in the comments. (GASP!!! How Original!! /sarcasm)

All we know so far is that everything that’s free right now, will remain free. Everything else is speculation. For me, the reason I ditched my 360 and stuck exclusively with my PS3 is because of the subscription fee of Live. I didn’t find it to be worth it for what it offered me in comparison to what PSN does for free. Not to mention PSN’s superior online performance.

What it would take me to pay say….$50 a year for a PSN subscription would be Free Qore, every month. 3 or 4 PSN game rentals for a week a piece. Maybe….$10 a month worth of DLC and if it’s not spent it carries over to the next month, in case like a $20 DLC will be out soon that I want. And 1 movie rental and a couple TV show rentals a month. That’s stuff I’d pay $50 a month for.

The gaming service itself is staying free, so that’s not even in the equasion, and I don’t care at all about cross-game chat, if that’s something that plan on using as a bargaining chip. The ONLY reason I think people are asking for that, is 360 having it, not that they really want it or will use it. It’s a useless and pointless feature. And on Live does nothing but adds to the lag. I hope Sony doesn’t add it, and if they do, it shouldn’t be allowed while gaming online.

I’m just hoping Sony can find some loophole around M$’s patent on universal in-game music, or make it a mandatory feature for PS3 games. Because I’m sick of not being able to listen to my own tracks in every game.

id pay if it was more like xbox live. i love xbl but i hate the 360. there unreliable and way too loud. psn is light years behind xbl. i love my ps3 and i would love it even better if psn was as good xbl. ive said from the beginning sony should charge at least $25 annually. think about how much better it could be. y settle for less

  12. Inja

you people need to stop whining about sony moving in the wrong direction, I would consider ourselves lucky weve not had to pay to play online so far, also even with premium subscriptions we still wont. Sony is still not in profit from the ps3 so i do hope a lot of people will subscribe so sony is getting enough to keep online gaming free.

  13. Crowley

I would most likely pay except my school completely shits all over the psn. XBOX Live works excellent for online play but for whatever reason i can barely even connect to a game through the psn. Seems kinda pointless to pay for something I can’t use 9 months outta the year

  14. David

How can anyone say if they will pay for premium services without knowing what those services are? Everything at this point is pure speculation and rumor.

  15. Justin

there is a VERY small chance that i will pay for the PSN. The thing i have always like about Sony is that it is free to pay online and i can just buy a game and go and not worry about when my subscription will run out and i need to buy more and that 50 bucks every year goes to another game :D

  16. name

how can you ask that when we have no idea what we would gain access too?
for all we know sony could be giving us accsess to different faster servers so downloads complete faster, we could be having a 1 time suscription fee than everything is free.
pay say 10 bucks a month and than you can buy anything you want for free.
so instead of paying for 5 PS1 classics and paying 50 bucks you only pay 10.
but than on the other hand it could be some crappy features no one wants.
so lets hold off the hoorays and boos till we know what were hooraying and what were booing for.
    okay?

  17. Fausto

    I don’t think I would pay for it. I bought a PS3 because I didn’t want to pay Live!

  18. Sky

I personally don’t want to pay for online play. I understand that it will help Sony’s pockets by adding this charge, but what about their customers especially in this recession. Its bad enough having to pay $60 for each new game, (and that hurts my pockets as is) but to add a online fee, when all I do is play online once in a while..its stupid

  19. DevilDog273

If I did I wouldn’t pay more then I would for Qore.. which I didn’t buy either. It would havt to offer something really big like unlimted downloads or one of it’s perks would have to be attomatic discount on psn store stuff… I just want Vudzone & voice msg

  20. Amnesia

You’re asking if people will pay an unknown amount for unknown content and expect to get meaningful replies? How can anyone say yes or no?

  21. CJ

Just like my old school tests I select E. Not enough information

  22. Redlogic

the only way i will pay for it is…The PSN subscription will get you to access Sony’s Itunes (who knows what they will call it, but I know its in the works or should be). The membership will get you unlimited songs to download from the store (ala Zune Pass) as well as free monthly movie renting. You will be able to turn your ps3 into your computer for music since the Hard Drive space is enormous (or you can swap out current for a larger one). Perfect for movies and games. You will also be able to play music bought from Sony ITunes during games and will make the process of adding music to your games seamless. Home will be redesigned so that you can also access the music store with your avatar and purchase music using your avatar or jump to the game you have in the deck or psn games you have downloaded. Then Sony will re-introduce their IPOD killer Sony Walkman. Your Walkman will be able to sync up to the ps3. Imagine all these different things working from one place.

  23. kitsu

im not paying for it and i definitely not using psn eny more if they start making premeum only areas thats the hole reason i dont play most online games they want u to pay regularly for bs its kinda mesed up and i will fight it

  24. waleed

of course i will pay … as long as the same psn is free … think of what the premium account would be !!

  25. Sebastian

ill probably pay for it if it has better things and everything in the store will be free. but i will also pay if theres two or more players paying online like 360

  26. [...] little while back, I pondered if it a Premium PSN would be worth the cost. Now that we have a bit of an idea on what Sony is thinking, has this changed your [...]

  27. Hans

i will, sony does great things for its consumers
and the more attention they see they have the more
they give back to the people, unfortunately the big wigs
see nickles and dimes as their statistics but 50 a year
is a simple price to pay. At this point the perks are speculated upon so arguing about “worth” is quite redundant…
however i have heard that this subscription will include some sort of access to all PS1 games on the PSN probably limited to some degree but i dont know about everyone else but i love PS1 games, 50 a year is a good price in my opinion, also further speculation of getting access to Beta games sounds like a lot of fun.

That being said…..must all remember that everything being said prior to an official announcement is pure fan boy speculation and not fact i also think “LarryL” has the right idea as well

  28. andrew webb

if sony start charging i will sell my playstation people i now have changed from xbox live to playstation because it is free its stupid why change somthin great
