Richard Marcinko, aka Demo Dick aka a crazy bastard. The man created Navy SEAL Team Six, the counter-terrorism arm of the SEAL teams. If you don’t know much about him I suggest reading his autobiography, it’s interesting. Or you can get a nice idea of how the man views the world via his new video game Rogue Warrior from Bethesda Softworks. In Rogue Warrior you get to fill the shoes of Demo Dick himself, voiced by Mickey Rourke. Needless to say there is a lot of swearing, shooting, and stabbing. It’s fun.
At the Eurogamer Expo I got to play the first level of the game, invading North Korea for one reason or another set in the 80’s. The weapons and gear match the era, which is an indicator of some of the detail in the game. Two solid shots to the chest dropped enemies without a problem, but be careful the little bastards might be still crawling around. Graphics and controls are pretty standard for first person shooters of this generation. Where the game truly differentiates itself is with the Brutal Kill feature. Instead of hitting a button for a standard wussy melee attack you hit a button and let Demo Dick do whatever he feels is necessary, which is typically very efficient and extremely effective at eliminating enemies. Compared to the standard worthless slash with a knife or butt of the gun melee attack I found myself going with the Brutal Kill every chance I got. Brutal Kills take the control away from you for a moment as you are shown Marcinko snapping necks, slitting throats, or assisting in kidney removal, before you are dropped back into the action. You can still execute Brutal Kills under fire or without stealth, it’s the best method of the removing pesky targets when you are low on ammo.
I was very tentative approaching this title as it was originally announced in 2006 with Zombie Studios developing, but Bethesda not happy with the direction canned the project and brought it to Rebellion. After playing through the full first level seeing the execution style Brutal Kills, and the cover system I’m excited for this title. I’ve been a fan of Demo Dick so I was fearful of this game sucking but that doesn’t look like it will be the case.

WOOT!!! I have read all the Rogue Warrior™ books and have been waiting for them to either be made into a movie or a game. *jonesing for it*
