Review: Critter Crunch

Critter Crunch Screen

Puzzle games come and go, but really good addicting puzzlers are a little more scarce. Critter Crunch completely falls into the latter category. A cute 2D hand drawn art style with simple, yet difficult to master gameplay and a ton of different puzzles make this a must buy for any PS3 owner.

You’ll immediately have a smile on your face as the game’s intro takes you through the history of finding Krunchatoa and the Biggs creatures. The premise of the game is to feed smaller island creatures to larger ones, which produces jewels to feed Biggs. Various combos and different types of creatures (exploding creatures, etc.) are presented as you work your way through the Adventure mode. You’ll also have to feed your offspring, Smalls, by literally barfing rainbows into his mouth. You’ll progress through each Adventure mode stage by collecting enough jewels as the creatures continue to drop down the screen. Fill your jewel meter before they hit the bottom or you’ll die. Critter Crunch also features a Puzzle mode where you have to clear the board in a certain number of moves, a Challenge mode where you have to complete certain difficult tasks, and a Survival mode where you rock out for as long as possible. Many of these modes can be played both during Adventure mode as well as by themselves from the menus.

There is very little wrong with Critter Crunch. You can play two-player multiplayer in both cooperative and competitive modes, although I had a hard time finding online matches, which is sad because it’s a blast. Until the game starts selling more, plan on playing local multiplayer.

If you like puzzle games and own a PS3, get off your ass and buy Critter Crunch. It’s probably the best puzzle game you’ll get on the console this year. It’s only $6.99 and worth every penny.
