Modern Warfare 2 Loses Dedicated Servers for PC Multiplayer

Modern Warfare 2 Trailer Screen Capture

Well, it appears the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 will no longer be the beneficiary of dedicated servers.

A EuroGamer story states that developer Infinity Ward will roll out a new proprietary service, called IWNet, which will focus on matchmaking. More after the jump.

This news served to irritate PC-based fans of the series, who immediately started an online petition demanding dedicated servers. As of yesterday, there were more than 96,000 signatures on the petition.

Apparently, this little tid-bit of information has also spurred a 13-page thread on the Infinity Ward forums, that details the cancellation of many pre-orders for the game by those upset over the lack of dedicated server option for the PC version of Modern Warfare 2.

A sampling of comments:

I also cancelled my preorder. I’ve got better things to spend my money on than that. A great Singleplayer? that’s no comfort to me. -.-

I work at EB games in a shopping center here in Australia. We got hit with an onslaught today, 193 total preoders for Modern warfare 2 on PC, today alone we lost 78!

Four of my co-workers went to GameStop at lunch yesterday to cancel their pre-orders. They said the guy working told them that there had been a slow but steady stream of people coming in to cancel pre-orders throughout the morning.

And, just to be fair:
I walked into my local game store and… …went ahead and paid for MW2 in full after putting $5 down on it a couple of months ago. You people that are canceling are going to miss out on a great game.

Infinity Ward developer Robert Bowling has taken to his blog in an attempt to further explain/clarify some aspects of the online experience PC users will face.

Hit the poll below, and tell us what you think.

The POLL doesn’t even let me choose the ONE option that should be in it!!

As in: “YES! I will not buy it anymore!”

The answer ‘no way in heck!” is meant differently than it’s meaning….

question: Will it affect your purchase? answer: No way in heck! Gives it a different meaning than you guys meant ey?

I was talking about yesterday with some people. Unless you are a PC FPS fan you won’t understand how bad this sucks. I wasn’t going to get it for PC anyway just because I think Counter Strike is still the gold standard and I play Urban Terror for a more arcadey experience but I may buy used for 360 now just to avoid rewarding IW for screwing the PC guys.

    1. Wow Urban Terror takes me back a few years. I used to be a very hardcore PC gamer back when I was 13. Plenty of UT, Battlefield, CS:S, and Quake. Having a dedicated server to go to every night when you hop on is what PC gaming is all about. Most of the time you either join your clan server or just a pub where you know everyone.

Dont worry my little cod fans.
The big daddy is coming to rescue in march.
YEAH BAD COMPANY 2, sorry Infinity Ward this one is too big for you.
Now the people say hey but COD4 was a HIT, yes but remember Battlefield 2? It was released on 2005 and… ah its still being played by today massively and more than the pc version of cod4 even being cod4 a newer game.
So now BC2 is coming the REAL Battlefield 3 be prepared this is one big monster ready to devastate everything in its path.

    1. When you said the big daddy is coming to the rescue my mind went instantly to Bioshock 2 :) . Anyone else?

    2. Spaceraser

while i will be getting BC2 on ps3, i will agree that i prefer Battlefield to COD, simply because a) its more fun and b) its not made by activision.

  4. I won’t be buying this game now, since it’s 60 bones on the PC and I don’t get PC dedicated servers. I’ll still play it (nudge nudge) but I won’t buy it, no thank you.

  5. [...] and I really think that has happened in this case. Infinity Ward is speaking out left and right to explain its decision to use IWNet instead of straight dedicated servers. While I see their point, a lot of people [...]

The holier than thou crowd crying. I hope all future PC games give total control to the developer. I support developers getting total control and profit over “their” product. GO IW.
