How does one gauge success? Critical acclaim? Overall Sales? Fanbase? I believe it falls somewhere in the middle. Based on this premise, one can argue that Halo 3: ODST is a better game than Killzone 2. The question is, do you believe that?
Killzone 2 may be the single best looking FPS on the market today. Its graphical power is still unparalleled. It is the flagship shooter for the PS3 and is still one of the best reviewed games on Sony’s platform and for good reason. It is just an exceptional game. Throw in a 10-12 hour single player campaign and a very addicting, satisfying multiplayer and you have a winner. Despite all these accolades the game is given, which are well deserved, the game has sold 2 million copies worldwide to date. Then comes the high priced expansion that everyone has an issue with, but bought anyway, Halo: ODST.
Let’s look at the empirical facts here. ODST is built off of a 2 year old engine with some polish added. It has a 6 hour campaign that has detracted from everything we have ever known about Halo. Outside of a 4 player Horde-eqsue game mode, the multiplayer is for all intents and purposes unchanged and re-packaged. Well, guess what? It sold 2 million copies. The first day. The reason is simple: Halo has transcended the gaming community and has become something of a cult, in which I am a very happy member.
Comparing the games is not going to get us very far here people. Killzone 2 is better in most ways outside of multiplayer which a case can be made for either. The marketing campain for Killzone 2, in my mind, was awful. We got a few short commercials, some viral trailers, and Sony expected everyone to scoop this up based on word of mouth. It did not work. Did Halo: ODST need an amazing real-life trailer that probably costs millions to make? Did ODST need teaser after teaser to garner interest? Did it even need to include a beta key for a game none of us have seen a shred of game play from? No, it didn’t. It’s Halo. It is God and we are all believers.
Say what you say about fanboyism. I own all consoles. Why? I like video games. A lot. I play them whenever I can because it’s cheaper than gambling and safer than prostitutes. We have to look here at something special. An overpriced, overhyped expansion to a 2 year old game outsold one of the best looking and playing shooters ever made in a matter of 24 hours. Love it or hate it folks, in gaming, there is Halo, and there is everyone else.

I did play KZ2, and I have to say:
1) KZ2 is NOT the greatest FPS of all time. Not by a long shot. Broken controls, unbalanced multiplayer, overpriced DLC (yes, I went there)
2) KZ2 does NOT have a real story. It’s got as much of a storyline as Super Mario Bros. Cliche from beginning to end.

I’ll admit that I havent played Killzone ever. But, just want to say some few things. IMO.
1. Halo 3 is built by an old engine. So, of course the graphics are worse. However, the design of the level is wonderful. Also, note that everything you do in halo is being recorded.
2. Any FPS fan, will tell you that Halo is a an epic game. Halo was made in 2001. Before call of duty, and other good FPS came out. They were the ones who thought about two weapon management, and rechargeable health and more. Most recent FPS games copy the game style of Halo, if not Half Life.
3. As I said, I never played killzone 2. So, I dont know the story. But, Halo has a deeper story than what most people think. Heck, not even one webpage can summarize the whole halo story.
Personally I only own a 360 so of course I ragged on Killzone. However, once I went over to a friends house and played it I was utterly stunned.

I bought Killzone 2 day one. had a blast with it and the multiplayer was pretty solid. but I must agree, it isn’t one of the best FPS’s ever made. I was playing KZ2 multiplayer this weekend after like 6 months, and there really is a steep learning curve with the controls.
maybe people hate the ps3 and all its exclusives because the majority of people just cant afford the ps3, love loss breeds hate. but the best advice i can give you is work, save up and buy a ps3 you poor moffafcukers. the darkside is where you will all surely fit in.

It sold because it is Halo. This is not a bad thing, but rather quite the opposite. The gameplay is solid and there is little reason to deviate from it. However KZ2 is a good game, hell a great game. Ignoring the fanboys it did have a story, even if it wasn’t astounding, Halo’s story isn’t exactly the pinnacle of storytelling either. As for controls, I didn’t like them at first either. That is why there is an option to change them. Please stop making yourselves look like idiots.

I don’t know about the gameplay, but today I was watching this game on a store, and gameplay wise it was normal. I didn’t see nothing that would wow me. As for the graphics, well, the graphics are… well… are weak to say the least. I know graphics are not everything, but what the heck. It’s been 3 years into this generation. And those graphics are lame. No excuse.

sales=/=a great game. Killzone2 was a fantastic experience in my opinion , especially the multiplayer. However the singl-player , being as polished as it was, didn’t delve deep into many story elements which are important to me as a gamer who loves a good story. So, even as a PS3 only owner I would probably agree that ODST is the ‘ better ‘ game. in our opinions.
Im sorry, but Killzone 2 is not a very good game. i was one of the ones who waited for it for 4 years, hoping it would be the best game ever, eating up every little piece of info, preordered it like 2 years before it got released, then left work to go pick it up and play it the second it got released…………and within 5 mins of playing it, 4 years of expectations were just shattered.
the input lag just ruins the game. there is no getting around it. pressing shoot and it taking half a second to shoot is not good. pressing up and it taking half a second to look up is not good. then theres the incredibly short campaign – i dont know what you were doing to make it take 10-12 hours, but i was done with it in just shy of 6 hours, first play through on the default setting. it was piss easy, boring, and as generic as they come.
multiplayer is riddled with lag, unbalanced, and noone talks or communicates. it only took a week of light play to reach the top rank and unlock all the skills etc, and after that what was there to do?
killzone 2 was one big failure, and the sales figures reflect that thankfully.
halo 3 is not the second coming of jesus either, dont get me wrong. after halo 2 i didnt even care about 3, but after getting the beta with crackdown i was interested. the multiplayer is unrivalled, and even the single player surprised me.
picking up halo odst today, and i have no doubt ill enjoy it more than the hugely disappointing killzone 2.

I own killzone 2 and yes graphics are amazing, story line so so (same goes with halo) and multiplayer is great with the gameplay being ok. OK…I’m just gonna say one thing now, the people buying ARE NOT xbox fanboys. I say this because a lot of Gears of War fans aren’t buying it. It is for Halo fans or people who have yet to play halo 3, and whats to get a game that’s not linear and level based, yet still have the Halo feel (and the full Halo 3 Multiplayer experience.) Everyone seems to be forgetting that it IS a full game. Just because the “campaign” doesn’t live up to the “amazing” (and i say that sarcastically) experience of the Killzone 2 campaign doesn’t mean Microsoft is controlling people. I’ll list some facts as to why I think Halo ODST (that package, not relating to the Halo series) is significantly better then Killzone 2;
Graphics:
Halo 3 ODST may not have AMAZING graphics when you compare them to Killzone 2, because it’s not trying to have “Photo realistic” graphics because again, it’s a game based on a slightly colorful universe. Even so, to say that the graphics are the cause of it being a great game is sad. How can you say that when hundreds of thousands of people play this game all of the time, and it’s not just “Halo fanboys” either. People play it because it’s visually appealing to the eye, especially when you have pretty much every other game being release within the same generation trying to be “photo realistic” Sure, Killzone 2 does have amazing graphics, but staring at the high resolution textures all day can cause some strain on the eyes (unless you own Gunnar glasses)

Gameplay:
This is where it should REALLY matter. Just because a games graphics are way above par does not mean its the best game (think Metal Gear Solid 4, which by the way had a great “story” but not enough replayability to be rendered a “great” game in my books.) Halo 3 ODST has some amazing gameplay elements. I say this because even within the apparent “out-dated” engine it still introduced a new way (not new in a game “Horde mode”) to experience the Halo series. It has its own multiplayer experience much different then the original Halo 3 one, and it has a new experience for the campaign aswell. NOBODY can say that Halo’s gameplay is subpar, because it is currently the #1 game played on xbox live. Nobody would support a game that plays bad no matter what the history of that game is. Simple as that. Plus it comes with a disc thats basically contains Halo 3. The question is, would people have bought ODST if it DIDN’T come with the bonus disc? Yes they would because it’s still a great game.
To conclude, to all PS3 Fans, or even Killzone 2 fans, stop ripping on a successful game, because at the end of the day, you’ll go play Killzone and the Xbox Fans or Halo fans will go play Halo. And before anyone says anything NO Killzone 2 too is not a bad game, it’s a game that, if you own a PS3 check it out, if you own an Xbox, you probably already own a Halo game. If you own both, choose what ever system you play most first, as you are most likely used to most of the control schemes of that genre for that game, then get the other later.

UNJUST0013, its not the actual button mapping that sucks about killzone 2s controls, its the input lag that every controller input has that sucks. and the ENORMOUS dead zone in the analogue sticks that was only JUST fixed through a patch. too little too late, as everyone stopped playing it within 2 months of release. maybe if they got rid of the input lag id play it again.

I am personally a big fan of halo 3 (multiplayer only), the single player even though people claim it has one of the best story, it does not even come close to half life 2…. Killzone 2 on the other hand is a great game and deserves a lot of credit for the cinematic experience it gives the players, every single thing has been perfected to detail but again if anyone has played or seen Crysis in beyond 1080p resolutions it is just breathtaking….Saying Killzone 2 or halo 3 is the best game of all time is just plain fanboyism….Halo 3: ODST outselling Killzone 2 in a single day does not mean anything Microsoft is just milking the franchise now exactly the same way nintendo has been doing with mario for years now…..

Now I realize that PS3 owners minds are very divided.. they fight with 360 fanboy with quality games but don’t buy that games..then how come you prove stupid to the 360 owner..if u don’t buy.. then it must be a bad game..was Uncharted1 was a bad game !! hell no !! so, if someone feels comfortable with a game like Halo.. they will buy no matter what.. for my case God of War 3.. so if you can’t respect a game like Halo.. just leave !! I may not like Halo 3 but I admire the sales figure (10mil+) they didn’t add the pirated version which I think another 5 mil minimum.. and I think its stupid to own only one console.. why I will leave some of the great games (Forza, Gears, Mass Effect , Fable) for just owning 1 console.. I think.. last gen.. if you had a PS2, you pretty much cover 90% games.. but this gen.. don’t do it my gamer friends.. you just don’t know what u r missing ! thanks ! BYE !
You may own all three consoles (I can’t call you out on that, I don’t know you) but so do I and that article sucks. Killzone 2 having better graphics makes it a better game? Haha, riiiiight. You must have gotten a super duper special edition copy of Killzone 2 from Sony and in your copy the controls must not have sucked complete monkey ass like they did for the rest of us!
