Damn, Sony’s been busy this month, haven’t they? I’ve been toying with the idea of trading in my PS3 with an added 120G Hard Drive for the new PS3 Slim. I was also thinking about trading in my PSP Slim for the Go! Then I noticed something that had escaped me previously – the very small $50 or so price difference is disproportionate to the massive performance difference. Then that had me thinking “what the hell is Sony thinking?!”
Let’s start picking this apart then.
It’s not that I’m not a Sony fan – I have had every system they’ve put out and many other electronics in addition. And I think the price drop on the PS3 is a very good thing considering that Sony still loses money on every console. Not that the current state of the industry left them much choice, but still. I suppose my problem lies with the PSP Go!. The PSP 3000 is around $170 US. The Go! will be released at around $250 US. But when you look closely, there really isn’t a huge difference between the two. The system slides up out of itself like so many of today’s cellphones (the design is riddled with problems by the by) and has 16G of internal memory and no UMD slot (downloadable games only). Now some of you are shaking a finger at your computer screen saying “a 16G stick costs $100!!”. While this is true, remember two things: A). That’s retail pricing and B). The Go! has dropped the UMD slot – which wasn’t a cheap feature. So the changes level themselves out a bit.
The UMD drop also brings up a flip-side. No UMD games means a relatively large sales drop for a year and that has to be made up somewhere. Remember: people who have the Go! will have limited access to older games off the bat as Sony updates its back catalog for download. Those with limited/no internet connection won’t be able to download much unless they have access to an updated library or coffee house. So people who live out in East Bumblefuck with no online – stay away from the Go!. In a way perhaps the price increase is justified – just not $250 justified in my eyes.
So what do you think gamers? Am I the only one annoyed and perplexed by this monetary mishap? Is it a mishap? Glass half full (PS3 is as low as a PSP)? Half empty (PSP as much as a PS3)? Are there relevant factors that I failed to mention? Let us know.
The PSP Go is insanely overpriced at $250. They need to bring that down under the $200 mark very soon.
You’re right… a $50 difference between the PSP Go and PS3 is a bit ridiculous.
Eh, even $200 is way too much for a hand-held gaming system for me. There is just no way I would ever get any real use from it that would justify the cost. A PS3 should be able to launch a satellite for all the hoopla and the prices they’ve been charging. For $250, a hand-held should be able to tell me what I want for dinner or at least cuddle with me before turning over and falling asleep.
PSPGo is a terrible product.
Screen smaller than the 3000, no UMD more $$$ to get one? What kind of a PSP IS this?
What if I already have games on UMD? And, maybe I want to borrow a game from my friend?

i just brought a psp f that go. my wife said 50 less than a ps3 haha go get a psp no go
they’re also reducing lost revenue due to consumers being able to purchase used games, so there is no excuse for the price, other than they need to make up for having to manufacture two different consoles.

let the homebrew and emus rock the system and engineer a way to keep pirated copies from running at all. everyone wins, except the pirates of course.
Umm you forgot the most problematic part. No removable battery. The only time I use my PSP (with a RARE exception) is when I’m on a plane or in a car. With my PSP-1000 I can just swap the battery but on the PSP Go… oh wait.
Fuck the PsP Go. Go Ps3 slim.
I like the PsP better than the DS, and its suck how bad Sony treats it.

I think they should lower the price of the psp-3000 to 130(same price as ds lite) and have the psp-go be 170 (current price of psp-3000 and dsi) That, in my mind, seems to be a more fair price point.
Honestly Sony what are you thinking!!!! I can guarantee that this will not be a successful launch to the PSP GO! over here in Australia. PSP GO can go fuk itself
I think the PSP GO will face some serious sales issues now the PS3 Slim is so cheap. The PSP GO will need to be priced at around £149.99 to outsell the Nintendo DSi. Everyone knows Sony makes the better consoles its just the price difference that forces people into buying nintendos and xbox’s!
