Lost Planet was a surprise hit on the 360 before making its way to the PC and the PS3. An early title in the life cycle of the Xbox 360, Capcom gave us a different take on 3rd person shooters. The game has you killing strange monsters, but you must retrieve their thermal energy to stay alive on the planet which was cold as balls. This concept pitted you against a veritable death clock, which was balanced and difficult at the same time. The story made less sense than ordering a Diet Coke at Wendy’s, but playing as both human and as a Mech (they call them VS suits) was a fun ride. Enough stalling, how is the follow up demo?
The demo pits you against this huge caterpillar/monster thing. It has several hit points and is the size of supertanker. Your job is to take it down. There are plenty of weapons strewn about the landscape as well as several VS suits that can hold the much more effective heavy weapons like the shotgun and rocket launcher. You can also use your grappling hook to get inside the creatures stomach and tear it up from inside. You will be pooped out and no it won’t kill you. You have infinite lives so dying is not an issue. You can also do this on multiplayer against other people. You don’t fight each other, you fight said monster. It is a competition to see who can do the most damage, take a leg off, and pick up boxes that the monster drops which must be for points or posterity.
Compared to the last game, there is a definite graphical upgrade. The monster looked very detailed and the sound effects were right on par with some of the best games out there. The game play remained the same although the characters run strange. I don’t know, it just freaks me out. There will be probably a 12 hour or so campaign, with some co-op as well. There is a mulitplayer mode which is massive, but I don’t know how many people are going to be playing it with Halo: ODST and CoD: MW2 coming out soon. We’ll get you a full review and soon as it shows up from Capcom. Until then, give it a download. It is a fun way to kill a half hour.
