Review: Fat Princess

Fat Princess Screen

I’ve been infatuated with Fat Princess for over a year since I first got my hands on the game. A class-based capture the flag game where the flag is a chick that you fatten up with cake, how does it get any better? After delays and extended beta periods, we were finally graced with the game only to be plagued by multiple network issues. Sony cranked out a patch quickly, all is well and I can’t stop playing Fat Princess.

The premise of Fat Princess is simple: the red team has captured the blue team’s Princess and vice versa. You keep the Princess in your castle while the opposing team tries to rescue her. To make it harder for them to get her back, you fatten her up by feeding her cake. The fatter she is, the more people needed to carry her back to the other team’s castle. To accomplish your task of protecting the Princess in your castle, you can choose from one of four classes to play: Worker, Warrior, Priest, or Mage. They all have properties you would expect and can each by upgraded by Workers collecting resources. You can switch classes quickly by picking up a different hat, either in your castle of from a fallen character on the battlefield. Bloody fights ensue as people funnel towards the middle of the maps to get to the other side.

Network issues aside (which have been corrected), the only part of Fat Princess I didn’t like was the single player campaign. The bots in the campaign were just shy of useless and you had to go capture the Princess yourself. As someone who prefers the Worker and Priest classes, this was annoying as those classes aren’t the best for capturing the Princess. You also need to play through single player to unlock most things in the game, which feels like a forced way to make you play through by yourself in what is predominantly a multiplayer game.

If you have a PS3, Fat Princess should be on your must buy list. The game is an absolute blast. The maps are varied, the gameplay is very solid, and you’ll have a smile on your face while you play. Video games are all about having fun, and Fat Princess provides that in spades. Stop what you’re doing and buy this game right now.
