No New Elder Scrolls Title for a While

Oblivion01-500

I’m a huge fan of the Elder Scrolls titles, especially the last two.  I probably spent a couple hundred hours with Oblivion alone.  I loved the game so much, I sold my PS3 copy and bought the Game of the Year edition for the Xbox 360 so I could download the add-on content for it, which wasn’t available on the PSN (with the exception of the major expansions).

So, its unfortunate too see this news being passed around to various gaming sites.  At QuakeCon 2009, Peter Hines from Bethesda was asked by a fan about the future of the Elder Scrolls franchise, and he advised not to expect a new title anytime soon.  While this doesn’t confirm a new Elder Scrolls game of some sort isn’t in the works at all – perhaps its in the conceptual stage and will still take years to come to fruition – it is still a blow to those of us who are fans of the franchise.

I do respect their current love-child, Fallout 3, but I just can’t get into that game as much as I could with Oblivion, perhaps because of the setting.  I was hoping, now that they’re wrapping up the Fallout 3 DLC they have planned, some news about a new Elder Scrolls title would be just around the corner.  Now, this doesn’t seem to be the case.  Let’s hope Bethesda at least has some inkling on the direction they’re going to take the franchise and don’t plan to abandon it altogether.

  1. It’s funny that I could play Fallout 3 all day (well I can’t because of that glaring glitch right now) but I can’t take the time to settle into Oblivion.

Me too. I just could not get into the setting of Oblivion as I could in Fallout.

  2. Yeah, like I mentioned, its the exact opposite for me. :) I tried to get into Fallout 3 on multiple occasions (I think three rentals total…haha), and just couldn’t do it. The setting just didn’t interest me. I’m more into the high fantasy setting of Oblivion.

They’re both good games though, although I’m slightly jealous of all the attention Fallout 3 is getting, and no Elder Scrolls V on the horizon. :(

I also think Oblivion is good and I tried to play it 3 times, and I could not beat it.

  4. They are both different animals altogether. I’m currently on my third romp through the Wasteland, I’ve modded the hell out of my game and am enjoying it immensely.

Since Oblivion has been released, I’ve probably had more marathon sessions with it than any other game, we’ll see if Fallout gets there or not. Bethesda is my favorite game studio, and I’d love to see a new game from them, but I’m patient. If the next TES is anything like a technological leap forward like Oblivion was, I’ll need to save some cash to put into my computer to play it, heh.

I saw this on Wikipedia a couple of months back. I was kinda torn about it at first. There have been quite a few advancements since Oblivion came out and I figured a part 5 would stand as one of the best games of this gen even above Oblivion and Fallout. Now that I think about it, if they do make another part of this series it will probably won’t come until next gen. This is probably better than getting it at the tail end of this gen which is not that far away.

Heh, this is perfect for me. I’m usually so behind on the times that I might actually get to catch up. At least with TES… I didn’t touch TES 3 until the GOY edition with all the expansions came out.
