I have a pretty distinguished track record of having electronics break. Having gone through 10 Xbox 360’s and 2 Wii’s (how that thing died, I’ll never understand), I know what it’s like to have a console crap out. But I’ve never had just a small part die, like I did this morning. Way back in the day when the PS3 was released, I upgraded its 60gb hard drive to a 200gb monster. Extra space and faster rotational speed meant my console would be set for the foreseeable future. As of this morning, that upgrade has ceased to live. The hard drive is completely dead.
While my actual PS3 is still good, all of my game saves and downloaded content are not. I know that I should probably back things up, but I didn’t. Sure, I can redownload all the content I purchased through the PlayStation Store, but what about all my progress in the various games I’ve been playing? I’ve put countless hours into titles like Fallout 3, Killzone 2, and even MLB 09 The Show, which are all for naught.
I’m happy the actual console is still healthy, as it provides my PS2 usage as well (even though all of those game saves have kicked the bucket with this hard drive failure). I guess it’s time to go look for a new hard drive to put in this beast. Let this serve as a message to everyone out there: back your shit up.

Ouch dude, that sucks. I was actually watching a video this past week on upgrading the HDD in the PS3. No benefits were seen on a bigger solid state hard drive. The bottleneck is the PS3 and what it can do. If there is a way you know of to open that up (bus speed, overclock, etc.) then you will get the added benefits, but don’t go too crazy on the upgrade……
You might also see if the drive is still in warranty? Seagates and Western Digitals have a pretty good warranty system and you can check your drives serial number online…..
That sucks man, just sucks……..sorry to hear.
i know your pain. my ps3 got the yellow light of death. fallout, killzone, resident evil ,cod waw and so on. fallout 3 hurt the most. now i always back up my games.
Guess you won’t actually be saving any games on your vacation…
That’s a shame, though it’s interesting that out of the current gen consoles that you own that this one has been so dependable. I bought a 60GB model at launch and it’s been rock solid.
I stuck with the same rotational speed for my HDD upgrade, because of forum advice that said that the speed increase didn’t really help, and that it could even contribute to extra heat within the console.
Have you looked into data recovery services? Some places offer free estimates, and you would only have to ship the drive itself.
Thats why ps2 is where its at.
i still have my launch ps2 i upgraded it to a 250 gig sata drive i love it but i made the same mistake i didnt back up anything ,but oh well i have almost 50 hd movie on the dam thing now ,and jack why is the ps2 whare its at are you broke ? or just not willing to let go
.or just black ?
No PS2 love? Its still an awesome console for certain genres. Ok, one genre – RPGs. (Unless you count SingStar as a genre…) If you still have a substantial PS2 library and didn’t have the luxury of purchasing a PS3 before they dropped backwards compatability, its still good to keep your PS2 around, like I do. I almost always have a PS2 RPG going on the side along with all the current gen. titles I’m playing.
Man, that sucks.
What kind of hard drive are you picking up.
The hard drive is under warranty, so I’ll be sending it back to Seagate this afternoon. Hoping I get it back before my vacation in a little over a week.
I just found my original 60gb hdd for the PS3, so I’m going to put that back in there now to play Fat Princess and BF1943.
I’m most upset about my MLB 09 Road to the Show and Fallout 3 saves that I lost. I’ve put a LOT of hours into both of those. Not sure if it’s worth starting either one over…
I’ve never had a console crap out but I’ve never played one to death either. The most games I played were on the game cube and they had the cute little memory card. I don’t think I’ve put a lot of saves on my 360. That really sucks though, I hope they can be recovered.
Really sorry to hear that Matt. At least you didn’t lose hard to find downloads though. Losing 45 gigs of my Stephen Chow collection plus around 100gb of emulators and roms including all mame, final burn alpha, zinc, nebula, pc games ect ect was heartbreaking.
Anyway I would recommend going with western digital this time. I have dropped my 500gb external hard drive HARD a few times and the thing is till ticking.
Good luck and look at the bright side. Replaying some of those games will be a blast!
at least you didn’t completely break your hard drive that was in an expensive modded xbox by smashing the top of it just because your jerkoff friend was beating you in NHL2K6….. I don’t even like hockey
