Madden NFL 10 Achievements Cater to the Hardcore

Madden 10 Screen

I fired up a review copy of Madden NFL 10 for the first time today. As usual, one of my first stops was checking out the Achievement list. This year, there are 24 Achievements, most of which have a fairly high degree of difficulty. Each requires you play on the All Pro difficulty setting, which may be too much for the normal Madden player. You have to remember that Madden sells millions of copies every year to people who many would consider casual players. Most of these Achievements will go unrewarded to the majority who aren’t comfortable playing on All Pro.

A couple that jumped out at me include tackling Adrian Peterson for a loss 3 times in a game, tackling Antonio Gates inside the 5 yard line, forcing Kurt Warner to fumble on a sack, intercepting a pass intended for Randy Moss, and intercepting Peyton Manning 3 times in a game. A lot of these will remain unlocked on large number of consoles.

Sports game Achievements have run the gamut from too easy (the early titles of this generation) to way too hard (Madden NFL 10 could fall into that category). At this point in the life cycle of Achievements and Trophies, I would have thought developers could narrow in on the sweet spot, but it seems that hasn’t happened in the sports gaming world just yet.

Want to see all the Achievements? Hit the jump.

“Force Kurt Warner to fumble on a sack”? I’m confused, what’s the punch line? Oh I get it, like, it’s an achievement to get to him before he makes it to the end of his drop and just let’s the ball go all on his own?

  2. I have no problem with “hardcore” achievements…..as long as some achievements for the more casual player are there, too. It boggles me why developers don’t strike a happy medium.

    1. Yeah, it’s a shame. That’s what I was referring to as the “sweet spot”. Have some Achievements there for everyone. But these are very skewed to the hardcore side of things.

  3. You think THOSE are hard? You should try getting ANY achievements on Beijing Olympics 2008.

  4. CJ

Any true Madden fan can get these fairly easily

    1. You’re talking about the hardcore here, which is fine. However, Madden sells over 5 million copies every year and only a fraction of those plays can be considered “true Madden fans” that are hardcore enough to get these Achievements

  5. Big

I actually love that they’re hard, I hate people (like a certain friend of mine) that do nothing but play games FOR achievements.

Like someone said earlier, for real fans, these are still fairly easy (with the exception of the recover a fumble in the endzone for a TD one, which seems more based on luck) but hopefully will be a nightmare for those who just play FOR achievements

    screw casuals

  7. rodney king

theyre killing the industry along with nintendo and project NATAL. if ive ever seen some shit for babies it’t natal

Also put it this way, do casual gamers really care about achievements?… also do the hardcore truly care about them either? I think it really caters to somewhere in between.

    1. Sure they do (casuals). Since most who consider themselves “casual” players probably don’t progress through games as quickly or as extensively as more “hardcore” players, I’m sure its nice to see that achievement pop up on the screen.

Whether or not their existence would be rendered moot if they didn’t have a high gamerscore isn’t a hardcore vs. casual issue…I’m sure there’s some on both sides of the spectrum who don’t care. Conversely, there are some on both sides who care way too much. I’ve met some of them, unfortunately.

WoW made me hate achievements for any and all games.

Damn, either too hard or too easy for sports game achievements. I wouldnt mind at least a FEW easier achievements, dont make it a cake walk but looking at the list I’ll probably get 0, despite getting 490 points from Madden NFL 09

  12. chris

    they arent hard at all

i have 870 achievment points for this game already and it hasnt even came out
    gamertag: xALLxLEAGUEx52

the hardest one that i havent gotten is the recover a fumble in the endzone for a touchdown that one is hard

and the trigger a gang tackle with 7+ players has me lost
whether to get it being the HB or against

    1. Nades

im missing those two and the larry stickyfingers one, i get all the catches n it wont give it to me

      1. CowboysRthaBest

recover fumble i got on pureee luck hah. trigger gang tackle wasn’t really luck it was runnin with my hb and like ten guys tried to tackle me. and im tryin to get that larry stickfingers one its hard. apparently u have to make ten USER catches meanin u have to press B to be him then press Y to catch. and if he drops one single pass the entire game it doesn’t count. or if the cpu catches it and not the user.

  13. Anthony

I was tryna play co op with my friend but idk how to get to it. any chance someone could help me with that?

  14. Griffin

    The Secret Achievements are…

Mature Newbie: Create a Superstar (SS mode) at the oldest possible age. (10)
Nice play. Really.: Throw the ball away on Fourth Down. All-Pro (5 min. Q) non co-op) (5)
Safety Inspection Required: Create a team from Springfield (10)

Those are the easiest achievements to get in the whole game. Hope this helps the Casual Gamer :)

  15. i like fish tacos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! whoo hoooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i like swedish meatballs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. madden10junky

yo nades you cant drop 1 pass for the larry sticky fingers one.

  17. Madden?

I’ve only had one madden before, and I’ve gotten 19 out of the 24 in less than a few days. The hardest ones though are the TD fumble, and the Antonio Gates one. The Larry Fitzgerald one, I had to get 17 catches for him. i don’t know why. Adrian Peterson One was easy. (I’d just say, be behind by a field goal or something in the fourth quarter, and they’ll run the ball alot more). Tomlinson took FOREVER to get. Randy Moss Pass took FOREVER too. Pocket Monster was hard… but doable. I know that’s pretty rambly. But, they aren’t too hard. All of them are doable after a few hours. I must say, though. I’ll be playing madden for more than a week, like normal, with these achievements.

Yo, the Antonio Gates inside the 5 yard line I found was fairly easy. It doesn’t mean within the 5 yard line toward a safety, although for all I know it can work for that as well. I got beat on a play and he had it, I said ahh screw it I’ll let em almost score, I can just rewind it anyway. So I tackled him right before he scored the touchdown, and bam, achievement unlocked.

Also, the one for Kurt Warner in a sack wasn’t that tough. I just blitzed him all game and made sure if I hit em, I got em with the hit stick. In a couple tries he dropped it, and I it unlocked.

The Intercept a pass intended for Randy Moss one I thought would be one of the toughest ones too, but I found the AI tends to throw to him a lot. After a little bit I actually managed to get that and the Mr-Not-So-Perfect (intercept a Tom Brady pass) at the time

For every one here who does not know this all of these acheivements can be done with 2 controllers. For example, to get the funble pile up all u need to do is to get ur team to the 1 yard line, have them punt the other controller punt block kick a very weak punt and ta da, you have the fumble pile up. now make sure you win the pile up with the right controller and good job, you have the acheivement. like that one, all of these can be done with 2 controllers.

I consider myself a casual gamer who has been playing Madden since 09. I switch to the Xbox 360 console because the achievements gave another goal to shoot for. I have achieved just over half of the achievements. Granted yes, All-Pro setting is a harder for the casual gamers, but the many of the achievements are doable. James, the 2 controller thing, great idea! Worked like a charm.

  21. Wayne

Correction, I’ve been playing Madden since 99.
