What is the one major technological advantage the PS3 has over the Xbox 360? Blu-Ray support. The built-in wifi is great and the ability to easily swap HDD is a plus, but the lack of Blu-Ray support on the 360 sucks. The last major designer to support the format is Toshiba, who will be making their own blu-ray player to be released this year. Toshiba was the maker of guess what, the HD-DVD drive we all bought before the format wars came to an end. MS has denied any hint of Blu-Ray coming to the 360 as an add-on or as a built-in drive for a new SKU.
I am very doubtful that this will ever come to light and I think that MS has conceded the fact that Blu-Ray is a Sony victory. However, now that MS’s closest tech supporter is going the way of the Blu-Ray, speculation will continue to mount. Expect word from MS soon on this one.

I don’t see Microsoft really caring anymore. They seem content with going digital only with their Video Store, especially with 1080p Instant On streaming coming later this year.
No, Xbox 360 nor Xbox 3 are getting Blu-Ray, it’s impossible under Microsoft’s corporate-wide ban on Java.
Microsoft platforms(Windows 7, Xbox 360, and Xbox 3) cannot play back Blu-Ray movie discs because Microsoft bans implementing Java runtime required to run interactivity and menu portion of Blu-Ray format. Built-in Blu-Ray playback is never coming to Windows 7 and Xbox 3.
you a dumb ass windows 7 can to play it are you on drugs
BluRay is already supported by Windows operating systems.
And as a programmer; I can say for fact that JRE’s are supported.
Nice try though, good job!
Outwardly, MS may not care and it would be foolish for them to show it if they did, but they know as well as the rest of the IT World, that their 1080p streams, will be full of compression and still not able to match the quality of BR Discs. The files are just too large for mainstream adoption, given the infrastructure of the US (MS’ largest base for the 360). Some people would have the bandwidth, sure. But the majority would be left downloading for hours and hours.
I’m still not sold on the idea of MS adding the attachment, for the simple reason that they cannot release games utilizing BR discs….for the same reason Sony can’t remove BR drives from the PS3 to cut prices. It would force developers to release their games on 2 medium, for 1 console.
It seems to make more sense for them to simply continue with the disinformation machine, claim the downloads are as good/better than the physical format content that BR brings, and continue to capture the demographic that doesn’t really look into these things before making a purchase. For the rest, especially those with TV’s and sound systems that can output true 1080p with lossless audio, the PS3 is a pretty slick all-in-one media center. And some badass games to boot.
I really can’t see this happening.
To be honest, I don’t see Microsoft ever releasing a BluRay drive for the 360…or even for their next console, which is who knows how far off into the future. I doubt they’ll ever openly claim they lost the format war, and that’s what adding a BluRay drive will do, for all intents and purposes.
Does anyone actually care that the xbox360 doesn’t have a bluray player? I’m sure there are some videophiles that demand the extra HDness of one, but wouldn’t they be more apt to go out and buy a high quality standalone player?
With the streaming capabilities of the xbox360, i’m happy ripping video to divx on my PC and streaming it. If I lived in the US, I sure as hell would be streaming stuff from Netflix, not renting or buying movies on BluRay
It’s not just films that the Blu-Ray drive is used for. 50GB of storage is very useful. More so as time goes on & games get bigger & bigger. At some point both Microsoft & Nintendo are going to have to have larger media solutions like going from CD to DVD. Blu-Ray is getting to be an established safe format & it’s probably more cost effective to use that, rather than try & bring out a complete new format.
Who knows how MS & Ninty will deal with this issue though. Right now their current DVD drives aren’t causing them any issues (other than the MS ones scratching discs…sorry had to get a dig in, I know it was unnecessary), & their sales aren’t suffering because of this.
I’d love to see the Xbox 360 feature Blu-Ray disks. For me, as a movie buff, I just want to see the Blu-Ray format as widely spread as possible to make sure it’s available – now and in the future. I want see more classic movies on Blu-Ray!
blue-ray is not doing so hut it’s all about streaming media i even heard from bestbuy that people cant afford a blue-ray 30$ disc over a 15 or 20$ dvd really more people did buy stand alone hd dvd’ players over blue-ray but thanks to the ps3 it won
Streaming media still has a long, long way to go before its a “standard”, like DVD is now. It will probably be long after BluRay has come and gone. Its just not prolific enough. I’d be willing to bet 90% or more of households that watch movies/shows on a regular basis on DVD/BluRay don’t even have a device that can stream the same movies/shows to their TV or don’t want to pay the subscription fees involved.
But you’re right, the price of BluRay discs is probably keeping it from catching on as much as it could be. I only buy BluRay media when its as cheap as or cheaper than DVDs. You can find sales and price reductions a lot on BluRay movies.
I don’t see Blu-RAY not being able to be used on Windows 7. There are built in bluray drives that works on Windows Vista.
& Blu-Ray can read DVD’s anyway. Where’s the loss?
