It takes a lot for a game to really steal my attention and makes hours disappear like they were minutes. Plants vs. Zombies easily fits into that category. Every time I sit down and say “I’ll play for a few minutes”, it turns into a few hours. The game takes the tower defense genre, flips it around a few times, adds a touch of humor, and makes you not want to walk away.
You’re defending your house from goofy zombies in the game by using various plants to stop and attack them. As you progress through the Adventure Mode, you’ll move from the front yard of your house to the back yard and roof in both daytime and night settings (which affects gameplay). You have a limited number of plant slots, so choosing your weapons effectively is paramount to your success (more and more are unlocked as you play the game). Completing Adventure Mode unlocks some really cool things in the Mini Games and Survival Mode, where you take on endless waves of zombies until you’re house is overtaken. My personal favorite is the Mini Game where you play as the Zombies and eat “cardboard” plants (because you don’t want to eat everything while practicing, right?)

The only bad thing I can say about the game is the amount of time I’ve lost to other tasks. Seriously, it’s that good. PopCap has a major hit on their hands here for the PC and Mac. They’ve succeeded already in making me purchase four versions of Peggle and I can guarantee that I will get every version of Plants vs. Zombies they put out. The game would work perfectly on the Wii, DS and iPhone with their respective control schemes. Here’s to hoping we see more Plants vs. Zombies!

This game is spectacular. Recreates the magic of old-school games from DOS. Highly addictive and incredibly cheap, for 10 euro it’s a must buy.
I hate PopCap for creating Plants vs Zombies and delaying my research on science because of it.
