Sony better get their act together and do it fast. The entire world has been clamoring for a price drop, but shit just got real. Activision CEO, Bobby Kotick, dropped some wisdom on the TimeOnline:
They have to cut the price, because if they don’t, the attach rates are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony. When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console — and the PSP too.
Yikes! The public wanting a price drop is one thing, but the CEO of one of the biggest third party developers telling you they’ll walk if you don’t cut the price? Kaz Hirai better have a fruit basket on the way to Activision HQ already. Maybe pay extra to have those little butter cookies thrown in there too.
PS3 owners – does this worry you? Personally, I love my PS3, but this makes me wonder how much any third party is going to devote to the system in the near future. I would expect anything Activision related to always favor the Xbox 360. What baffles me the most about this quote is pulling support for the PSP as well. Sony’s handheld is selling well, so why the hate dropping there?

If I actually bought 3rd party games for my PS3, I might have a problem with it. But, alas, I learned my lesson long ago. The only developers capable of putting forth quality work, worth $60, are Sony’s 1st party devs.
My PC, on the other hand, has no such issues with their shoddy coding skills.

You’re missing out then.
Fallout 3 : Bioshock : Call of Duty
No offense, but are you just not capable of reading comprehension? You realize the 3 games you mentioned, are all on PC. What did I just say?
Morne
I read the part about PC but didn’t realize you gamed on it. I have a PC too but it’s too much $$$ to upgrade it to play the latest games. I play CS:S and stuff on my desktop.
I can’t run those 3 games as well as my 360 can
the price is totally fine. great games are being made for the ps3 and it has an amazing catalog this year and will only continue to gain user base. personally I only play guitar hero like once a month at best. all blizzard titles I play on my mac/pc. So i wouldn’t be directly affected by activision walking away. It would be unwise on their part with how the ps3 catalog is maturing however. People also realize it was worth it all along to pay a reasonable price for something that won’t cost your more money in the long run paying for what should be a free service.
A search online reveals the following:
1 160gig PS3 with the PSN from sonystyle.com today: $499.99
(includes a game, wifi and blu-ray player + PSN free includes multiplayer)
1 120gig Xbox360 elite with LIVE Gold from bestbuy.com today: $449.98
(includes 2 games, add $49.99 every year for multiplayer.)
Are people seriously bitching about paying $50.01 more for a blu-ray player, 40gig more HD space, and wifi? I guess some people just want everything for free. In the life of your system EVERYONE who owns an xbox will pay more for it than the ps3 owner if they want to play multiplayer online.
to put a price cut on that would be a really generous gesture on sony’s part because it is all ready very competitively priced.
The base xbox is only $200 and a LOT of my friends have that. It’s not a matter of it being more expensive in the long run, its a matter of how much you need to pay upfront.
A lot of my friends would have bought a PS3 if they had that amount of cash on them. Most of them just get small amounts over time, which is why they opted for an Xbox which I can’t fault them for.
yeah you are right, people tend to go for the least responsible choice when it comes to financial decisions. That is why our economy is such a joke right now. People like to pay nothing or less upfront no matter how bad it will kick their ass later. It is total craziness and it isn’t stopping anytime soon. It is the same with the xbox and ps3 just as it is for the PC vs mac stuff. Spend more upfront, get quality, dependability and in the long run, save money/time. Or pay small up front and inherit the problems of being cheap until you can’t afford it anymore. I agree that sony would sell more units if they were to offer a $200 crap unit with no wifi, no blu-ray, a tiny hard drive and charge those people for the PSN, but I applaud them for keeping it real and giving people exactly what they pay for upfront, all inclusive.
Folks do realise that this is benefitting Sony, right?
Think about it this way:
- Several retailers ask Sony for a PS3 price cut shortly after E3. Media reports of the hell out of it. Casuals and fanboys react.
- 3rd biggest publisher and an industry institution, Activision, challenges Sony to lower the PS3’s price, else face a possible prohibition. Media reports the hell out of it. Casuals and fanboys react.
- There is no such thing as bad press.
So who wins here in the end? Does this stuff increase interest in the PS3 or not? More specifically: Are more people are now watching the PS3 for a price cut after Activision’s comments or less?
ps – Does anyone think the PSPGo’s $250 tag, in lieu of how cheap the device actually is to produce, is related to a PS3 price drop?
Oops – didn’t finish.
In response to the question, as a PS3 owner this doesn’t concern me one bit.
