Growing up, I was a big fan of the Ghostbusters. I had Slimer sheets on my bed, which qualifies me for some sort of award, or at least a pat on the back. I’d always wished the team would get back together for a third movie, but it never came to pass. Now, that third movie has been incarnated as video game, which makes me tingle a bit inside. Mixing one of my favorite movie series with my favorite pastime should be a win-win scenario. Ghostbusters: The Video Game comes damn close to hitting it out of the park.
Right off the bat, you’ll be pulled in as the game starts at the firehouse with Ecto1 pulling in. The real actors that played each character are there and the game immediately immerses you in the world of the Ghostbusters. The story is good and will make you chuckle quite a few times (not at the same level as the movies, but then again, these guys couldn’t improvise like they did on the set of the films). Shooting the Proton Pack stream and wrangling in ghosts is just as fun as you would imagine. The other weapon upgrades you get down the line are cool, but the Proton Pack was my go-to since it’s such a classic piece of Ghostbusters history.

The co-op multiplayer additions are damn fun, albeit a bit flawed. You can play with two to four players in each of the game’s online modes, but playing with less than four people gives little chance of success, particularly in Protection, where you have to defend a series of 3 PKE Disruptors. The balancing of the game’s AI when you have less than four people doesn’t allow you to get through or get far in some modes. Other modes seem a bit short, such as Containment. The single player campaign isn’t the longest either, but I can see myself wanting to play again because of the work put in on the script by Harold Ramis and Dan Ackroyd.
If you remotely enjoyed The Ghostbusters, buy this game. If you like action games and destroying all types on environmental elements, buy this game. If you want to smile and laugh while you play through a campaign, buy this game. I’ll put it this way, if you want to have fun, buy this game. It misses the five star mark due to the balancing issues I experienced in multiplayer (and a couple connection problems), but Ghostbusters: The Video Game will definitely provide a good time.
