E309: Scribblenauts Could be the Best Game I Saw

Scribblenauts Screen

A DS puzzle game could be the best thing I saw at E3 this year. It turns out I’m not alone, as a few huge outlets have named Scribblenauts their overall game of the show. Developed by 5th Cell and published by Warner Bros., Scribblenauts is one of the coolest implementations in the puzzle genre I’ve ever seen.

The premise is simple: get your character from the starting location to collect a coin/star. There will inevitably be some obstacles to your success, whether it be water, height, barriers, etc. To achieve your goal, just spell out any object that you think could help. Scribblenauts has 10,000 items in the game, so most things you can imagine will be there. While playing the game, I saw God fight a Warlock, a flamethrower take down a snowman, and a policeman chasing a criminal with a gun. The possibilities are amazing. Need to get higher? Write “ladder” or “trampoline”. Need to go underwater? Type “submarine”. Every bit of Scribblenauts just makes you smile.

Scribblenauts will include handwriting recognition in the final product this Fall, but the demo only had an on-screen keyboard (which still worked very well). The game is so unique in it’s approach to completing each level, with the only barrier to success being your own imagination. Everyone should put Scribblenauts at the very top of their “must buy” list later this year.

I wonder. Will you be able to type ANYTHING? I am definitely going to want to be able to find unique ways to go about solving the puzzles.

    1. There’s 10k entries in the game’s database. I’ve seen videos of people summoning kraken, cthulhu, etc. It is a game meant for everyone, so you can’t summon a penis pump or anything. I’m not saying I didn’t try…

What will happen if you type “everything”? Will everything crush you and kill you?

    1. Didn’t think to try that, but it would be interesting. Haha

it is a terrific idea. even if the gameplay is stale, which it probably isn’t, just testing out words to see if they thought of them would be super fun.

I am thinking of buying a DS, with all these puzzle games coming out, I want to try that brain training as well..
