Review: X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Xbox 360, PS3)

Wolverine Screen

Wolverine is by far one of the best characters in any comic universe. He is the more human than mutant, but at the same time more animalsitic than any other X-Men. Wolverine has finally gotten the solo film project he so desperately deserved and now finally gets a video game that portrays him for what he really is: a tortured soul who wants to kill his way to the root of his problem. This time around, Logan is not in yellow spandex and a silly hat. This time around, there will be blood.

The first thing you will notice about this game is that Wolverine can use his claws whenever he wants without any penalty. In X-Men games before, the claws were a special power and you were often penalized for it. This never made any sense to me. You will also notice that Wolverine takes real time damage and will also heal in real time. This makes Wolverine appear that much more real. The third thing you will notice is the gore. There is a lot of it. There is more blood in this game that every single X-Men game combined. The developers really captured what Wolverine is here. He is an animal which will kill you in the most brutal way possible. The combat is easy and the combos are a lot of fun. It makes you wonder why no one has ever tried this before. It’s so simple and so gratifying. The graphics are very good, but won’t floor you. The voice acting is right from the film, so bonus right there.

Wolverine Screen

The game is not without some flaws. The combat, though fun, does get repetitive. There are a few stages throughout that have some rail shooting and climbing, but for the most part, you advance in the level, maim, move on. The boss fights are a huge let down. You lunge attack to the boss’s back, slash just until he throws you off, jump down, repeat. This is also repeated throughout and really slows the pace down. The enemy AI is not the best and the bad guys are cookie cutter, but this is expected with so many people to kill, they will repeat. The game needs less “Rock Monsters” and more actual characters. There just was not enough X-Men in the game. You can only kill so many “Machete Experts”.

The game has no multiplayer, which is good because it would not have worked. The game is also not that challenging on the normal level, but that is also not a bad thing either. X-Men Origins: Wolverine lets you take he reins of an awesome super hero and just shred people to ribbons. This is the Wolverine game we have been waiting for. The game could have used some more variety as well as more known NPCs, but it still works. This is a must rental for anyone who likes the Marvel Universe, though with a campaign around 10 hours and no high replay value, it may be a tough purchase. I do recommend playing this as soon as you can. Finally, Wolverine got the adventure worthy of his name.

I also thought this game was pretty epic. The game was fun, but repetitive. The levels are really confusing too which threw me off. But, all and all, really good rental for any one looking for some blood.
