Can someone tell Nintendo we want new games, not rehashed product with motion controls? The casual gaming giant today announced the upcoming release of Metroid Prime Trilogy for the Wii. Featuring new versions of Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes cominbed with Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, you’ll get a lot of Samus action.
It’s without saying that they’re all solid games, but why no new Metroid content? I’ll tell you why: because people will buy anything Nintendo gives them. This new Trilogy is going to sell over a million units because it’s the new hot shit from Nintendo.
Personally, I’m not buying it. I’ve played all three and don’t need to go back and play the first two with motion controls. Sure, having them on one disc is cool, but Nintendo still has a long way to go if they really do want to appease the core gamers. My bet is they don’t care at this point.

Maybe they’re just getting ready for a big Retro Studios announcement come E3 in a couple short weeks…
Good points, Matt.
First, I’ll admit that this seems like a stopgap for Retro’s next project, and I really wish that they were working on something new. Plus, I have a sneaking suspicion this game might be Reggie’s “we’re appeasing the Hardcore!” excuse at E3, much like Animal Crossing was last year.
Still, I have a feeling Nintendo hasn’t quite given up on the hardcore just yet. There seems to be two camps heading into Nintendo’s E3 conference: The one that believes Nintendo has learned its lesson from the past two E3s and will have plenty to offer for the hardcore, and the one that believes that their showing will suck as much as last year’s, if not moreso. As much as history, my own gut intution, and logic are pointing me towards the latter, somewhere in my heart there’s a strong enough feeling that it will be the former. I guess that makes me the definition of a fanboy. Excuse me, I’m going to go drink dishwasher fluid.
There’s no need to get so upset over this. Remember how poor Gamecube’s marketshare was last generation, and how disappointing the sales of some of last generations biggest Nintendo games were as a result? Iwata even explicitly mentioned that Metroid Prime sales were far below what Nintendo hoped for at E3 2003.
This miniseries of re-released Gamecube games with Wiimote enhanced controls allows Nintendo to make the most of some of last generations best Gamecube games which largely went ignored due to people simple not owning a Gamecube.
Additionally, Metroid Prime 3 itself seemed to go largely unnoticed beyond the small pocket of Nintendo fans, just a flash in the pan that passed right by XBox and PS3 centric gamers who still think the only games on Wii are Wii Sports, Wii Fit, and Wii Music. Nintendo is probably trying to make Metroid more visible to newcomers or those who have passed over Wii thinking it’s just a Wii Sports system.
Hate to burst your bubble, but it’s not on 1 disc. Each game has it’s own Wii disc.
Hate to burst your bubble back, but it is one disc. Here’s a direct quote from Nintendo’s press release:
“All three games now reside on a single disc. Players can access the game they want from a unified main menu that ties together all three adventures. “
Well, if a hardcore player never played any of the games, are maybe only the third one, than its a good idea Exp- a teenager.
But, its the same game. If you play the game before, and your not a uber hard fan, than your not going to get this Exp- Matt
Also, if you don’t have a Will and you think motion control is lame, than you still won’t get it Exp- me!
It’s a great idea – this will introduce loads of new gamers to one of the greatest gaming trilogies ever. Stop whining about the false adage of “no hardcore games” Nintendo have still developed more Hardcore games this gen than any other developer. People just have extra high expectations for them.
