Treyarch to Develop Call of Duty 7, Is Anyone Surprised?

treyarch

An”accidental” oversight saw the leaking of who will be developing Call of Duty 7. The game will almost definitely not be called that, but as far as time lines are concerned, it is number 7 until otherwise titled. Here is what was posted on LinkedIn by animator David Kim:

“I am currently on my second title as a senior animator in the games industry with Activision / Treyarch on Call Of Duty 7.”

Though this is big news considering how well the franchise has done, but is it any surprise. After Treyarch totally redeemed themselves with World at War after CoD 3 disappointed, they should stay in the loop. Allowing developers to alternate years with titles is a great business model. The time frame in which to finish the project and the ability to build off of what the predecessor has accomplished. Look for CoD 7 to hit the shelves in the fall of 2010.

No surprise, still think CoD5 was just average, and this is coming from a guy who played every CoD game (except the psp one), and loved every single one but CoD5. Wish that Infinity Ward would develope CoD7, cause I think they do a better job, but Call of duty is Call of duty.

I would say that CoD5 just put Treyarch in its place as the dev that can’t come up with anything creative. Honestly everything that IW has done has been great. Trey. on the other hand…

I bought CoD5 and sold it to a friend within 2 weeks.

Treyarch came up with the class system and leveling up.

Agree with the above comment. World at War was just average. Not redeeming at all in my eyes. The only reason WaW was any good was because it used the CoD4 game engine and most of the real work was done by IW a year prior. Let Treyarch have the CoD series, I for one won’t be buying them if they are developed by Treyarch. We all know IW is not developing CoD games anymore and that’s like letting General Motors make the newest Ferrari model.

    @ Nik:

Infinity Ward IS developing CoD: MW 2, which is basically cod6.

ya there will be a cod 10!

    @fierce Scuba
Infinity Ward has gone out of their way to make it clear that MW2 is NOT a Call of Duty Game. When they developed the game logo, no CoD anywhere to be found. While it is certainly a spiritual successor to CoD4 it is also certainly not a Call of Duty game.

Calling it COD6 is just wrong. Technically Call of Duty 2: Big Red One was the third Call of Duty game, but you don’t hear people calling it CoD3 do you?

  6. @ Nik:

I agree and disagree. IW has distanced themselves from the CoD brand, but it is a sequel for all intents and purposes. Modern Warfare > Modern Warfare 2. At that point it’s all semantics. Example, Madden football is now called NFL Football 10. Is it called Madden anymore, no. Is it a sequel in every sense of the word except title? Yes.

As far as CoD: Big Red One. The lineage is based on next gen titles only. Not counting all the PC games and other consoles before it.

    @ Steve Kohlbecker
Thanks for your reply. Hadn’t heard that Madden removed his name from the 2010 iteration of the game.

But all things considered I still have to come down on the side of MW2 not being a CoD game. Yes it will still be a FPS, and it will likely be very similar to CoD4 in breadth and scope. The only thing that will really keep it from being a CoD game is the fact that IW has divested themselves from the IP. They wanted to go on to develop their own IP that they don’t have to share, and I believe that is what’s going to end up happening to the Modern Warfare franchise. More to the point, I don’t expect to ever see Treyarch developing a Modern Warfare game, and that’s really why I think IW has done what they’ve done.

But it’s a preorder/day one buy for me, I have 13 days played on my X360 copy of CoD4, and I expect MW2 to provide at least that much MP playtime for me, if not more. (gt=Semper Discens)

The fact of the matter is most people do not make the distinction between developers, like we do. They make the distinction between game titles. Now to put all of this inovation and new technology, and talent into a title like COD, it all becomes lost, associated with their competition (Treyarch, who might have ruined the COD name for many newcomers which IW doesn’t want to have to suffer from or deal with. Treyarch lol, those coat tail riding, lime lighters, their success was a direct result of IW’s genious and dedication. IW wants to continue to make a name for themselves, and that name is not IW, it’s not COD, it’s Modern Warfare! That will not happen if they do all this work AGAIN just to pass it ALL over to trey by way of a title , and let them bask in THEIR resplendance once again, cuz they have to share a dang title! All that work, just to SLAP a COD6 on the front? with a tiny, and less commonly referenced “:mw2″?????? It’s common sense my friends…they just want to make their work more identifiable and distinguished.
    Example:
Two young kids talking, one asks the other if he’s played cod6, the kid will just get confused as to which one the hell cod6 is! They definitely aren’t going to be discussing the difference between Treyarch and IW, especially if MW was their first cod experience!!! But by mentioning Modernwarfare 2 They will have a clear distinction of what is what, and to expect something sensable and awesome, not an ilcronological WWII COD title
lol, just an illustration of what I’m trying to say here…u get it I’m sure…or do you think I’m missing something??? Please enlighten me, as we have a few months to go anyway…lol sorry for the essay!

You’re being a pompous idiot about it, Treyarch is their own studio who puts their own spin on the franchise. I’ll agree that IW is much more innovative and they obviously have incredible talent working on their graphic design but World at War was a solid shooter. I can say it’s the best WWII multiplayer that I’ve played before, there are tons of games using that era but the COD style gunning made this one more fun than most to me, along with not overcomplicating it with broken legs / in-depth medic mechanics / engineering and some of those other qualities added to WWII style games.

Modern Warfare 2 will be amazing no doubt, and unlike some people I’m not bothered by the idea that they are making up a story instead of using a real war. At the same time I’m happy with Treyarch and will eagerly buy their next rendition on the franchise as well, these two studios should be like brothers instead of complete rivals. Plus nazi zombies is definitely the best classic zombie type gameplay out there (L4D doesn’t count for “classic” because they run fast and have mutations, I mean the slow shambling brain eating kind).
