Review: Sea Rascals (iPhone/iPod Touch)

sea-rascals-1

Sea Rascals is a puzzle game that is a hybrid of Tetris and Bejeweled. The premise of the game is to make groups of 3 or more matching sea animals and then clear them by pressing on the grouping. You can also drag and swap rascals to aid in your pairing. The game starts with already fallen rascals and more will continue to fall as you progress which is where the Tetris reference comes in. They fall at a decent speed and the game is not too challenging, but it does have flaws.

The most noticeable flaw that I encountered was the swapping of the pieces. The idea is great, but you will often find yourself frantically trying to move pieces around that just won’t move because you are slightly off or the game does not respond. It is hard to say which, but when pieces will fall and fall and fall regardless of how bad the sensitivity is, you may just say screw it and go play Tetris or Bejeweled. This is a nice puzzle game and a juvenile one at that. There are snorkly things and sea horses. Give it a shot if you like puzzles that involve sea animals.

Reviewers should probably play the games that they are reviewing.

    @ maurice:

where do you think those screenshots came from?

    ess my dee

the central feature of the game is the chaining of rascals to remove the higher level debris that eventually clog the screen. that is the most complex aspect of seas rascals and where the bulk of the strategy comes in. Like any good puzzle game, it is easy to play at an entry level, but it requires nimble thinking and dexterity to play it to its fullest. This review missed some key details that make sea rascals what it is and doesn’t represent the game accurately as a whole. Bummer.

    @ fierce Scuba

Taking a screenshot does not qualify for actually playing it. My point was covered pretty well by ian above. There is central feature of the game that was completely missed by the reviewer. It is the part of the game that I enjoy myself. And it’s not even an arbitrary feature since you have to perform the chains to get rid of those numbered garbage objects that drop into the screen as you play.

    @ Ian:

The game is not awful, I did give it a 3 of 5 which is not an indictment. I played in further levels where there are boots and other “sea trash” which need to be removed, but the overall concern was the game had poor response when trying to touch it. That was a key detail for me. If a game is not enjoyable at the early stages, later stages won’t be enjoyed due to said shortcomings.

    Bummer indeed.

    Review FAIL!

Maurice is right Mr. Fierce Scuba. And that is because those screenshots came from the game’s website (http://www.pajamahousestudios.com/searascals/news.php) lending credibility to the theory that the reviewer very well may have not played the game at all… or at least evidently not enough to fully understand it.

You guys might be the worst ninjas I know. This game is awesome.

    @ fierce Scuba

What is your icon by the way? It looks like it could be a Mike Tyson Super Mutant Behemoth from Fallout 3.

maybe you are a manlier man than I and have epic fingers, but the response wasn’t an issue for me, I even made it onto the global leader boards with my tiny childlike hands. Certainly the enjoyability factor is unique to each player and I definitely respect that. Just thought it was important to have all the details of the game included in the review. And now anyone can see them here in the comments so it is all covered :)

  9. I can confirm Steve played the game extensively. I also played the game and agree 100% with Steve’s review. The review covered the basic gameplay elements and focused on the touch input issues, which I experienced as well. The screenshots were taken on Steve’s iPod Touch, they are not from the developer’s website.

I’m sorry you don’t like the review. It’s an honest representation of the game. You don’t have to agree with us, but I don’t appreciate the accusations of writing a review without playing it.

Fact: The screens came from my ipod. It would be an amazing coincidence if the score on the bottom and pieces were identical to the link you provided, which they are not.

Fact: You attacked my credibility, after I thought I was involved in a civil discussion.

Fact: I do have large hands. I am 6′3 252 lbs. Feel free to find me on facebook.

Fact: My icon is Manbearpig. Half Man, Half Bear, Half Pig.

Fact: I gave your average game an average score.

  11. Maurice

    That’s 3 halves!!

  12. fierce Scuba

Manbearpig is so fierce that he has to be quantitated in improper fractions.

  13. Maurice

Haha of course. A creature of that sort defying logic and proportion to exist goes without saying. I should have known better than to question it!

  14. Low_Jo

    I like the game :}

Harsh debate about this game. I’m going to try it for myself
