John Carmack, being the genius that he is, decided to port Wolfenstein 3D to the iPhone. With Wolfenstein being one of the godfather’s of the FPS genre, I’d say it was a good move. If you haven’t played Wolfenstein at this point, you need to have your gamer card revoked. Being $4.99 on the iPhone now, there’s no excuse to not play this game.

The best part about Wolfenstein 3D Classic is the customizable control schemes. You can choose to use tilt controls or a virtual d-pad on the screen. The on-screen movement controls can be positioned wherever you like, so you freaks out there with odd shaped thumbs can still find a comfortable control scheme. Once you do, it’s time to fire up any mission from the game’s six episodes. You can start at or play any level from any episode you wish, so if fighting Hitler at the end is all you want to do, it’s as easy as a clicking on the screen a few times. There are four difficulty settings to accommodate whoever might want to pick up and play.

Not much is wrong with the game in its current form. I had a few issues with the controls before the game was updated to version 1.1, but everything is peachy in that area now. My one gripe, really, is that you can’t set a zero point for the accelerometer during play. I use the tilt controls for turning and sometimes play while laying down, which can cause you to turn wildly if your iPhone or iPod Touch isn’t perfectly straight. Hopefully this can added in a future update.

Wolfenstein 3D is a legend in the FPS world. Every gamer should have an experience with this game, whether it be on PC, console, or the iPhone. Wolfenstein 3D Classic is a perfect port of the game done by it’s creator and is a steal at $4.99 from the App Store, so go pick it up right away.
