Sony’s Fiscal Year is Over – Where is the PS3 Price Cut?

PS3

Sony has stated many times that a PS3 price cut would not come during their 2008 Fiscal Year. Well, that ended a few weeks ago. It’s time to drop the price.

While a price drop was announced to coincide with the company’s new Fiscal Year, it was for the PS2, which was both inevitable and disappointing. Gamers, journalists, and analysts alike are all clamoring for Sony to make a fairly major price drop for the PlayStation 3. It’s still by far the most expensive console on the market and has been lagging behind in sales with the cheaper Wii and Xbox 360 moving more product. With the economy still down globally, slashing prices is the best way to ensure more sales for your product.

While I absolutely love my PS3, I believe the longer Sony waits to announce and implement this much needed and overdue price drop, the more they’re going to lose out on sales. People cannot afford purchasing multiple consoles in this economy and will pick up a cheaper product if needed.

So, Sony, when will we see a cheaper PS3?

Stop moaning about the price cut for crying out loud. How many times do Sony have to say it’s not happening. It’ll happen when Sony want it to. It may be the most expensive, but it’s definitely the best value for what you get. End of Story.

while i would be pretty irritated by a price cut since i paid $400 2 months ago it is pretty needed for others.

i also must point out going from the 360 to the ps3 the ps3 is far superior in all but one way. SUPPORT. if your ps3 dies even out of the box like mine did you need the box,and receipt to get it fixed. that can be an issue for people who got one as a gift. and if its broken and you don’t have the receipt it will be considered a $150 out of warranty repair, despite the fact its the newest model and has only been out since november, far less then a year ago.

i bought my 360 used, almost 2 years after release and it was a launch console and 6 months later it red ringed. no questions asked microsoft fixed it. sony makes it a huge hassle

“So, Sony, when will see a cheaper PS3?”

English Mutherfucker, do you speak it?

your comments are antagonistic and serve no purpose. you are the loser my friend

man you guys the ps3 has gotten so many price cuts stop being greedy. How many time does the price need to go down to satisfy you. I dont have a ps3 but its not the price that would have worried me. Im sure the reason why people dont go and buy a ps3 is not beacuse of the price but the games themselves. Xbox 360 has the best shooters and best controllers for shooters. Also the 360 has some pretty sick exclusives. the wii has zelda, mario and the casuals favorite wii fit and wii sports.A price cut wont help the sales. If you look at japan the ps3 is outselling the other consoles because of the games not the price.

  6. ian

yeah, i agree with Kaden. You guys are beating a dead horse here with the same “story” every other week. It will happen when it happens and it isn’t over priced. everything else is garbage and priced accordingly. get over it.

  7. chad

it is not needed, unless you want sony to go bankrupt. the superior hardware has every right to cost more.

You can keep wishing for it on and on, but that price cut will never come! Sony put itself in the same predicament as the 3DO and NeoGeo by going luxury price as it does with all it’s other products nowadays, and look what that did — Vizio took over the HDTV market, Apple’s model-tiered iPods killed the Walkman and now Wii and 360 sales are clobbering the PS3. By the time the dust settles it will be Microsoft and Nintendo sitting by themselves with SCE (and all the rest of Sony for that matter) collapsed and dead from the economy, competitive factors and so forth. All that will be left of the once-great Sony will be a few movie studios (think MGM and Columbia) and television businesses (primarily the Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune games) though who knows where… but to use the line associated with Mr. McMahon from the WWE, Sony basically has “no chance in hell” this time around.

    1. chad

hey dumbass. the ps3 has sold more consoles in THE TIME ITS BEEN OUT, than the 360 did. IT CAME OUT A YEAR LATER YOU IGNORANT BASTARD. so stop posting your uninformed opinions.
also- “vizio took over the HD market.lol maybe if ur hella poor!

      1. weiss

what the fuck is your problem?

      2. sabreblade

Rich people love making that comment. I’m not rich, but I could still afford to buy the PS3 and no one is impressed with your shitty attitude.

      3. Jeffrey Davis

My apologies if I sounded a little brash, but the point is that Sony, in my opinion, is unlikely to maintain the viability of the PS3 if you look at the facts being stacked against it. For one thing, the sour economy has had many people downsizing their budgets, so it’s very plausible that the PS3 will start being ignored by the masses in favor of the cheaper Xbox 360 and Wii hardware because of budgeting issues. Second (and this is a clarification of my prior comments) is that the 360, Wii, and even the PS2 COMBINED to have outsold the PS3… PLUS the fact that the PS2 is still going strong while the PS3 lags at dead last (or actually is depending on how you look at it) in its install base does not look good. Toss in the fact that multiplatform releases for HD titles favor the 360 in units sold and you have what could very well be a recipe for disaster.

One other note I should mention is how I went off on the viability of Sony with the economy like it is. After reading your responses, I wold like to apologize as I may have exaggerated things a bit. However, I still believe that Sony has some issues with it’s long-term sustainability, and since this price cut on the PS2 is likely to be taken as a “cut on the wrong hardware” (if it hasn’t already) it is still entirely possible that even if Sony isn’t killing itself as I previously suggested, then it may still be killing the PlayStation business at the least. But all of this was just my opinion; whether or not it actually happens as a result of the negative factors that could do it remains to be seen (and is still up for debate).

In the meantime, please rest assured that I was NOT trying to start a fanboy flame or anything like it. I was just stating a possible scenario and may have exaggerated things a bit; however, I was just trying to make a point about the current debacle that Sony is in with the PS3. Having said that, I understand that everyone has an opinion and mine may have been a little on the extreme side but the fact of the matter is that Sony has a lot to do if it is to avoid the same fate as the 3DO and NeoGeo, and at the current time its prospects for doing so are looking increasingly unlikely by the minute.

If Sony does drop the price they won’t announce it anytime soon. They’ll try to milk as much profit out of the PS3 as possible before that happens, and who can blame them for doing that, they are a corporation after all. The price cut will probably be sudden and we’ll have no prior knowledge of it, unless it gets leaked. It would be stupid for them to say, Hey on April or May whatever were dropping the price. People would just wait till that day to buy it and they’d lose out on potential sales. I wouldn’t worry about the price cut, it’ll come soon enough. Just enjoy what you have and know that you have a superior product compared to the Xbox 3shitty. Also check out the Neogaf forums as the members who post there tend to post reliable info, you may find out about a price drop from them first.

  10. ILikePopCans

Why was this post made, who knows. Sony will drop the price when they do, but I’m still not buying it till its $200. Cause the ps3 does not have many games! For hardcore gamers, the xbox is the way to go. Microsoft has better/more first party games, and most third party games are better on the xbox. The xbox WILL break, but you can just get a new one, cause xbox is better, cause god said so.

stop whining. I paid Y55000 for a 60gig launch model in Japan. It has full PS1/2 back compatibility, 4 USB slots, memory card reader function and everything else that the new ones have too. Thanks to the cheapness of many gamers thinking they can get something for nothing, many people went out ad bought 360s that lack many of the features of PS3 but relay instant gratification by being cheap. Well, instant gratification laters leads to health problems as many Xbox owners have experienced. Also constant medical bills (wifi adapters, wireless controllers, propietry hd upgrades with abhorently low densities). Because of these non-forward thinking cheapies in the market Sony has been forced to punish future buyers by cutting out features that made the launch model so useful. Now many people are waking up to the idea that spending more money in the first place may not lead to instant gratification as you may need the patiences to put away some cash, yet in the long run quality products are safer and less frustrating. Just look at Apple’s so called ‘Apple tax’. I’d pay double that to not use Windows. End of rant.

  12. Kaden101

The old argument that the PS3 doesn’t have any games is a load of cobblers now. Most of them are multipatform – Call of Duty games, GTA4, etc, etc, & then there’s plenty of exclusives. GT5P. Uncharted 1, MGS4, Killzone 2, Heavenly Sword, 2 Motorstorm games, Little Big Planet. Lots & lots. Yes the 360 has a higher qty of games, but that doesn’t make the PS3 software line up barren. Either system has plenty to keep you busy. As for the controllers being better on the 360, it’s purely preference, neither controller is better, they are just different. Like Dr_Jones said above, Sony are going to keep denying the price cut until it happens, it’d be bad business to do anything else, & it is a company that needs to make profit to survive. Selling over 21 million units since it’s been out ain’t bad. It’s only getting outsold in the US, Europe is about even & the 360 is getting outsold 3-1 in Japan at the moment. Also, who knows how many of the 360’s out there are 2nd or 3rd units that have been replaced out of warranty because it’s either easier & quicker than dealing with Microsoft or it isn’t an RROD so it’s not covered by the extended warranty. If you’ve got a large collection of 360 games, I can understand why you’d buy another 360, it may not be ideal, but it’s cheaper than buying a PS3 & then having to replace all of your collection, & you might prefer the 360, there’s nothing wrong with that, & I don’t own a 360 before anyone kicks off, & I most likely never will for my own reasons that are not a dig at anyone else.

Sony doesn’t need to do anything. Right now, they’re stabilizing their finances, which, as a company is a hell of allot more important than feeding cheapskates quality hardware. Right now, Sony has a distinct advantage in the console market, simply because they can sit back and let their internal studios (of which, there are many), continue to pump out solid titles. They’ve already proven that they can meet and exceed anything the 3rd parties have to offer, so it’s really the 3rd parties who need to prove something to the Sony hardcore in my opinion, I’ll make an exception for MGS4, but again, when a developer works solely on a piece of hardware you see differences in performance, from a multi-plat title.

In my opinion, everyone needs to be thinking about the 2x 2-ton Gorilla’s in the room, ala GT5 and GoWIII. What happens if Sony waits until one or both of those is finished, and then drops the price $100? Seriously, what possible motivation do they have right now to cut the price? There’s nothing right now, that’s generating huge amounts of hype. June at the earliest for Infamous, but, my guess is GoW3 and/or GT5. Those two games represent a HUGE fanbase.

Okay. For a lot of my friends it has boiled down to price. I know that a lot of my friends have the arcade console because it was the cheaper than the PS3. Most of them paid for it out of their own pocket and don’t have the extra $130 that the PS3 costs.

To say that money has no role in the sales of consoles is completely ignorant. $100 difference can be a big factor to some people.

I’m not saying any system is better, I’m just saying that price does indeed play a factor.

  15. chad

I was not implying that im rich or trying to have a bad attitude. i was simply stating my point of view. as jeffery said sometimes may come off brash. chill folks

    1. Mixb

Honestly I didn’t read most of the “essays”. I’m just saying to everyone that price plays a factor. I wasn’t directing my comment at anyone specifically btw.

      1. chad

very much agreed that price plays a factor to a certain section of the market.
but I think that dedicated gamers will go for the console that they prefer for whatever reason no matter the cost(within reason). enough with the troll articles :)

  16. moi

    HEY! I got an idea!

Lets write up 4 paragraph long comments to show the world how much we know about 3 different video game consoles. If anyone disagrees we will lambaste them with hate replies and boring, long winded and waaay too long rebuttals – just to show that only OUR opinion is correct. Aren’t there an infinite amount of INTERESTING things to talk about?

  17. ian

it is just weird that these articles keep happening here. Wishing something will happen isn’t news. Perhaps the people that comment here aren’t the majority, but we all seem to be saying the same thing. PS3 is priced exactly how it should be priced. It does not require a price cut right now. Its sales numbers are exactly where they should be based on cost, quality and advertising. People who wanted it got it, people who wanted a bargain got something else. People who place gaming as a high priority got ‘em all. We all know this, so why is it a mystery to the writers? Price is a factor to varying degrees. If gaming is a main hobby of yours, price is not the most important factor, it slips way down the list. If you are super casual or uneducated about all the options, or simply do not care, price is likely going to be the main factor. It is all relative to your interests, not so much your financial situation.

  18. Chad

I’d like to point out yet again….The PS3 is the best and is priced well for all the added benefits you get with it. SO I AGREE WITH IAN…:)
