One thing the iPhone isn’t lacking is word creation games. There are quite a few in the App Store which give you a group of letters in which to form as many words as possible. To release a game of this type, you need to stand out from the crowd. Word Smith brings its own feel, with you needing to come up with words to forge a sword in medieval times. But does it do enough to deserve your hard earned cash?
Word Smith is great as a pick up and play title. The various game modes (some of which are unlocked by earned enough in-game Achievements) give you some variety terms of how you play the game, but ultimately you’re forming words from a board that appears on screen. Whether you’re trying to reach a predetermined score or see how much you can get done in a certain amount of time, the core gameplay is still the same.

Two of the game’s modes, Missions and Iron Man, require you reach a certain Achievement point level before unlocking (3000 and 5000 points, respectively). I think Tiger Shark Games could have reduced these numbers, as you will have to play for quite a bit of time before you reach those levels.
If you’re a fan working with and creating words, you’ll appreciate Word Smith, even though the overall concept is a bit hokey. The game doesn’t do enough, however, to distinguish itself from the multitude of titles in this genre for the platform. But for $1.99, it’s not like you’re breaking the bank picking this one up.
