Sony announced today that the PS2 is now priced at $99. While it’s big news to have a console under that $100 mark, dropping the price of a last generation console isn’t what Sony needs.
The PS3 has been on the market for about 2.5 years now. It’s time to focus on the current and the future, which is the PS3. Sales of that console are what matters most right now, and dropping the price is what is going to spur sales. Across the board, press, analysts, and consumers are all calling for a PS3 price cut, but Sony seems to have missed the boat and dropped the price of their last generation product instead.
Not sure how much this is going to spur the sales of the PS2. Month over month, the sales have been on a decline according to NPD data. If Sony is going for profitability in their overall games division, I don’t think this is going to be the answer.

I agree with you. Sony needs to focus on the Current and Future for SCE which is the PS3.
Granted the PS3 is totally worth $400 but let’s face it. At least a $50 price cut would have been nice.
Oh well, I already have one. I just hate to see Sony loosing the sales war. In my eyes, they have already won the gaming war.
Maybe after sony posts a profit a ps3 cut will come?
