GDC09: Checking out The Conduit

The Conduit

We rocked a full preview on The Conduit back at NY Comic Con, but this week at GDC, I got to check out a bit more of the game with the Creative Director, Matt Corso. Matt was one who really developed the customizable control scheme, so you can thank him for being able to play the game exactly how you want.

The demo I saw started at the beginning of the game and went through the end of the second level. After the first tutorial-like level, the game takes you back in time five days as the story events unfold. Corso indicated it was a “Pulp Fiction like story”, but wouldn’t comment on whether you play through the previous five days or if the story bounces around in time. If it’s a lot like Pulp Fiction, my guess is bouncing around. All in all, Matt said the story would be a “wild ride” with a lot of information being delivered through the player’s headset as well as radio and TV broadcasts.

The Conduit will feature five difficulty modes, with the easiest catering towards the casual game to provide a low barrier of entry, with the harder difficulty level providing a challenge for the veteran gamer. You can change difficulty at each level, so if things get too hard or too easy, you’ll be able to switch things up. High Voltage expects a good amount of replayability with various hidden items to find throughout the game, which is nice considering they expect the campaign to take only about 10 hours.

You’ll be able to carry two weapons at once going through the game, but don’t worry if you’re looking for more variety. Weapons will be plentiful throughout every level so you won’t need to worry about always holding onto a certain weapon type. A new gun being shown off at GDC is the TPC launcher. This awesome weapon shoots grenades that, upon impact, dissolve enemies into thin air. We got to see it in action during a scene going through various subway cars as you vaporize multiple enemies the entire way through.

While High Voltage isn’t talking about multiplayer just yet (soon, friends, soon), Matt did indicate that we can expect the same high level of graphical detail in the online portion of the game that we’ve seen in the single player campaign. In fact, he said a few levels online are actually the best looking in the game.

This is my second run in with The Conduit and it only served to increase my excitement for the game. With a June release not too far off, I’d imagine we’ll be hearing much more from Sega and High Voltage in the coming weeks and months. The Conduit will certainly be a must-own title for every Wii owner, so save your money up now.

  1. With the Wii’s lower price point and titles like this coming out I think many more gamers will blow the dust of their Wii’s and rock this out.

im not posting this to troll the wii, but honestly when there are games out there like killzone2 and unreal tournament 3 it’s impossible for me to think about playing with such atrocious graphics.

chad you are trolling, when give a negative comment like “atrocious graphics” and comparing games from other consoles your trolling so do us a favor and take your trash elsewhere. The Conduit is going to be a great graphically powerful Wii game and this game is going to rock! A true hardcore Wii game is on us and its going to be awesome!
