Loot Ninja Talks with 50 Cent About Blood on the Sand

50 Cent Blood on the Sand Screen 2

I got a chance to spend some time with various other game journalists yesterday afternoon talking with 50 Cent about his upcoming game, Blood on the Sand. The call started out all good and well, but things got pretty turned around quickly with Fitty going off on various issues.

The biggest quote to come out of the call was Curtis Jackson (50 Cent to you and me) saying he’s working on getting the rights to make a film adaptation of Saints Row. “With my relationship with THQ, you’ll actually see me develop Saints Row into a screenplay and into a film project. I’m optioning the rights to that now.” Whether he actually gets those rights is still up in the air, but it would be interesting to see his take on the game.

I got a chance to ask Fitty about the difference between making music for games versus writing a standalone album. While he goes into an album with a theme and style in mind, he was able to craft the music to the game’s story, which gave him a bit more to play with. “From the Curtis album versus this project that’s kinda like in the fantasy vibe… my range is different. I can go wherever and not actually have to explain it. I did a song called I’ll be the Shooter and edited the video game into it. We utilize the terminology that’s used in the actual environment, where people [otherwise] might feel like you have bad intentions.”

One of 50 Cent’s biggest problems with his first game, Bulletproof, was that “the character was hard to control.” He indicated that was one of the biggest features he wanted changed for Blood on the Sand. Fitty hearkened back to the good old days of Pac-Man, Dig Dug, Tetris, etcetera “where you only had one joystick and one button.” Gotta love the desire to keep things simplistic.

On the future of the 50 Cent and G-Unit brands in gaming, Curtis Jackson doesn’t see a rhythm game coming down the line. “I had the opportunity to play Guitar Hero while at MTV taping the last episode of TRL. I had a lot of fun doing it, but I’m not sure how much fun it would be with hip-hop music, unless you had MP3s and beat machines in it.” I have to agree there, Mr. Cent.

While you might not think so, 50 Cent is actually a gamer himself. He rocks all three current-gen systems with a Wii in his office and an Xbox 360 in his truck. The big daddy of them all his home racquetball court which has a 24-foot screen with all three systems hooked up for his kids to play. Pretty damn cool if you ask me.

Towards the end of the call, Ben Gilbert from Joystiq asked 50 Cent how he feels about his responsibility to the youth and society for warnings about the inclusion of racist and sexist themes in the game. Fitty, after explaining it’s an M rated game and people have heard all these words before, says “Ben, I’m gonna watch what you write and I’m gonna find yo ass!” Don’t get all up in arms, he was joking around and we all had a good laugh about it. Pretty damn funny.

We’ve got a full review of 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand coming soon, so check back for that. While Fitty didn’t have a whole ton of info about the game development of upcoming DLC or anything like that, it was still pretty damn cool to get to speak to the guy.

What questions did you ask him?

    1. I asked him about creating music for a game versus an album and his gaming interests.

Did he say what type of games he plays?

  3. [...] on the call with 50 Cent we had back in February, I’d venture to say he’ll have some choice things to say. Maybe [...]
